[Termes IGN] seuillage d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) In this paper, we present a novel automatic and unsupervised change-detection approach specifically oriented to the analysis of multitemporal single-channel single-polarization synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images. This approach is based on a closed-loop process made up of three main steps: 1) a novel preprocessing based on a controlled adaptive iterative filtering; 2) a comparison between multitemporal images carried out according to a standard log-ratio operator; and 3) a novel approach to the automatic analysis of the log-ratio image for generating the change-detection map. The first step aims at reducing the speckle noise in a controlled way in order to maximize the discrimination capability between changed and unchanged classes. In the second step, the two filtered multitemporal images are compared to generate a log-ratio image that contains explicit information on changed areas. The third step produces the change-detection map according to a thresholding procedure based on a reformulation of the Kittler-Illingworth (KI) threshold selection criterion. In particular, the modified KI criterion is derived under the generalized Gaussian assumption for modeling the distributions of changed and unchanged classes. This parametric model was chosen because it is capable of better fitting the conditional densities of classes in the log-ratio image. In order to control the filtering step and, accordingly, the effects of the filtering process on change-detection accuracy, we propose to identify automatically the optimal number of despeckling filter iterations [Step 1)] by analyzing the behavior of the modified KI criterion. This results in a completely automatic and self-consistent change-detection approach that avoids the use of empirical methods for the selection of the best number of filtering iterations. Experiments carried out on two sets of multitemporal images (characterized by different levels of speckle noise) acquired by the European Remote Sensing 2 satellite SAR sensor confirm the effectiveness of the proposed unsupervised approach, which results in change-detection accuracies very similar to those that can be achieved by a manual supervised thresholding. [Termes IGN] visualisationRésumé : (Auteur) This article presents the use of the frequency histogram legend (FHL) as a substitute to traditional legends in both classed and unclassed maps. Great variation in the size of mapping units can hinder reader's ability to comprehend statistical distributions from a choropleth map. Replacing conventional legends with FHL can aid readers i their understanding of spatial as well as statistical distributions of the mapped data sumultaneously. A custumized mapping application was designed in ArcInfo 9.0 to test the use of FHL in both classed and unclassed choropleth maps. Frequency histogram legends were tested on different types of statistical distributions. although the comparison of the results show that the FHL works best for a Gaussian or close to a gaussian distribution for eight or fewer classes, the customuzed application permits users to generate choropleth maps with frequency histogram legends for any type of statistical distribution with any number of classes. The analysis reveals that reader's background in statistic helped them to effectively utilize and interpret frequency histogram legends in the choropleth maps. [Termes IGN] matrice de covarianceRésumé : (Auteur) The problem of detecting a materialofinterest in a hyperspectral image is considered. Knowledge of the background materials in the image is assumed. It is also assumed that the stochastic noise in the system has a Gaussian distribution with a known covariance matrix. Using these assumptions, along with the requirement that the material abundances in the pixel must sum to one, a filter called the constrained signal detector (CSD) is derived. The CSD is a variation of the generalized likelihood ratio test (GLRT). Where the GLRT uses maximumlikelihood estimates (MLEs) of the noise in the received signal, the CSD uses constrained least squares (CLS) noise estimates. It will be shown that the CSD is actually a scaling of the CLS target abundance estimate which has been derived elsewhere. However, the CSD computes that estimate much more efficiently then existing methods do. It is proved that the CSD outperforms the orthogonal subspace projection (OSP) detector and that the CSD is the optimal detector when there is only one background material present. Note de contenu : Pourquoi les incertitudes existent-elles ?
