[Termes IGN] transfert radiatifRésumé : (Auteur) Multidirectional observation from the spacebome POLDER (Polarization and Directionality of the Earth Reflectance) instrument makes it possible to measure the bidirectional reflectance of a large variety of Earth targets. A careful selection of cloud-free measurements with a large directional coverage lead to about 22,000 sets of measured Bidirectional Reflectance Distribution Functions (BRDFs). This data set is used to evaluate the ability of analytical models to reproduce the observed directional signatures. Among those evaluated, the best models appear to be the three-parameter linear Ross-Li model, and the nonlinear Rahman-Pinty-Verstraete (RPV) model. On the other hand, all models fail to accurately reproduce the sharp reflectance increase (hot spot) close to the backscattering direction. Based on physical considerations, we suggest a modification of the Ross-Li model, without adding a free parameter, to account for the complex radiative transfer within the canopy that leads to the hot spot signature. The modified linear model performs better than all others, including the RPV nonlinear model. Although the correction modifies the retrieved directional signature parameters, it does not change significantly the surface albedo estimates. [Termes IGN] réflectanceRésumé : (Auteur) Topographic variations affect the reflectance properties of the Earth's surface and are often removed in remote sensing studies. especially when significant terrain variations exist. In this study, however, we show that shading effects assessed by Landsat can be treated as a signal that stores important topographic information, especially when the spectral characteristics of a surface are homogenous. The coastal transverse dunes of the Ashdod area, and the desert linear dunes of Nizzana (both located in Israel), were selected to investigate the above-mentioned idea. The dune heights in these areas are 10 m on average (relative to their surroundings) and have maximum slopes of 33°. An innovative method for extracting slope, aspect, and height data for sand dunes using Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) and Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+) images was developed, based on the regularity and periodicity of dunes landscapes. Using two Landsat images representing different sun zenith and azimuth angles, reflectance values of each image were converted to cos(i) values (i =incident angle between the surface normal and the solar beam radiation), applying histogram matching methods. The slope and aspect of each pixel were determined as those that give the best prediction of the observed value of cos(i). Height profiles were then extracted, using simple trigonometric relationships. The accuracies of heights and slopes along selected profile lines were to the order of 1 m and 3°, respectively (at a spatial resolution of 15 m). Best results were obtained when the images included one from the summer and the other from the winter, corresponding to maximum difference in solar zenith and azimuth angles. Errors in heights were attributed to surface heterogeneity (e.g., presence of biogenic soil crusts in the rainy season), geometric correction errors, cast shadows, and Bidirectional Reflectance Distribution Function (BRDF) effects. Comparison to Advanced Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) 3D information showed that the proposed method is better in representing the topographic variation of the area than the digital elevation model (DEM) produced by ASTER. [Termes IGN] transfert radiatifRésumé : (Auteur) The so-called hot spot is a fine directional signature of the surface reflectance observed for phase angles close to zero. In this paper, we analyze and discuss several such signatures acquired from the airborne POLDER and HyMap instruments during the DAISEX'99 campaign over agricultural crops. The observed signatures are very similar to those acquired from space at a resolution of several tens of kilometers [J. Geophys. Res. 107 (2002)], which provides further evidence that the hot spot is a scale-free feature. The hot spots can be fitted by a twoparameter function (amplitude and width) of the phase angle derived from canopy radiative transfer modeling. The model predicts that the amplitude is directly related to the leaf reflectance, while the width is a function of the canopy structure. The retrieved leaf reflectance values over a wide spectral range are in very good agreement with noncoincident laboratory measurement. The retrieved half widths are on the order of 1° with no significant variability between the analyzed targets. There is an apparent spectral variability in the half width, a feature in contradiction with the modeling, although the variations are not larger than the uncertainties. [Termes IGN] réflectance végétaleRésumé : (Auteur) In order to improve biodiversity management in the Wellington region of New Zealand, it is necessary to make an inventory of the indigenous forest-where is it, and what type is it? The single greatest impediment to making a spatially (i.e., 1:50,000 scale) and thematically detailed inventory from satellite imagery has been the topography of the three mountainous ranges in the Wellington region. The effective irradiance of incoming light varies with slope orientation, as does the proportion of light that is reflected towards the satellite (the bidirectional reflectance). In this paper, we show how satellite imagery may be processed to standardised spectral reflectance, which is a property of the vegetation alone, independent of sun position, slope, and view direction. Because of this, the use of automatic methods to map vegetation and provide spatially and thematically detailed maps is greatly simplified. Using this method, we produce a land-cover map of the Wellington region, with eight classes, to a classification accuracy of approximately 95%. We also show how the proportions of conifer, broadleaved, and beech trees may be determined for indigenous forest to provide a framework for forest-type inventory. [Termes IGN] zone arideRésumé : (Auteur) Surface roughness is a key parameter for computing the emissions and for simulating the atmospheric cycle of mineral dust. However its assessment on the basis of field measurements from source areas scattered round the globe requires much effort. Here we investigate the retrieval of the aerodynamic roughness length of and areas using surface bi-directional reflectance products derived from passive multi-directional measurements in the solar spectrum of the POlarization and Directionality of the Earth's Reflectances (POLDER) sensor. The so-called protrusion coefficient (PC) of the surface derived from the POLDER bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) is well suited to estimate surface roughness. From an appropriate selection of POLDER data, a composite PC dataset has been established over the Sahara and the Arabian Peninsula. We have investigated the relationship between aerodynamic roughness length and PC, and have derived a statistically significant empirical relationship between these two parameters. This relationship is applied to the POLDER-derived PC to map the aerodynamic roughness length of and areas in northern Africa and the Arabian Peninsula at the spatial resolution of POLDER (- 1/16). When degrading these data for global models, we show that the information is essentially preserved at coarser resolutions up to . This map of roughness length derived from the POLDER instrument, and a corresponding map derived from a geomorphologic classification, have been tested by comparing the predicted dust event frequencies obtained using them to dust indices (IDDI) derived from Meteosat IR observations over the Sahara desert. The agreement using the POLDER derived roughness length is at least as good as using the map of roughness length derived from the geomorphologic approach. Our results show promising new prospects for regional and global scale simulations of mineral dust emissions from and regions.
