[Termes IGN] intensité lumineuseRésumé : (auteur) The terrestrial laser scanner is an equipment developed for surveying applications and is also used for many other purposes due to its ability to acquire 3D data quickly. However, before intensity data can be analyzed, it must be processed in order to minimize the edge or border effect, one of the most serious problems of LIDAR's intensity data. Our research has focused on characterizing the edge effect behavior as well as to develop an algorithm to minimize edge effect distortion automatically (IRA). The IRA showed to be effective recovering 35.71% of points distorted by the edge effect, providing significant improvements and promising results for the development of applications based on TLS data intensity to many studies. [Vedettes matières IGN] Inventaire forestierRésumé : (éditeur) Forestry operations currently rely heavely on forest inventories that employ field plot data as a basis for estimating forest attributes. This labour-intensive approach provides limited information and has become a costly bottleneck in completing operating. Remote sensing can be used to obtain more accurate and comprehensive forest inventories with less effort. This article discusses high resolution forest inventory services (HIRISs) which combine state-of-the-art remote sensing technologies and computer analytics to produce operational forest inventories that help to improve the efficiency of various forest management activities. [Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (auteur) Recent advances in 3D scanning technologies allow us to acquire accurate and dense 3D scan data of large-scale environments efficiently. Currently, there are various methods for acquiring large-scale 3D scan data, such as Mobile Laser Scanning (MLS), Airborne Laser Scanning, Terrestrial Laser Scanning, photogrammetry and Structure from Motion (SfM). Especially, MLS is useful to acquire dense point clouds of road and road-side objects, and SfM is a powerful technique to reconstruct meshes with textures from a set of digital images. In this research, a registration method of point clouds from vehicle-based MLS (MLS point cloud), and textured meshes from the SfM of aerial photographs (SfM mesh), is proposed for creating high-quality surface models of urban areas by combining them. In general, SfM mesh has non-scale information; therefore, scale, position, and orientation of the SfM mesh are adjusted in the registration process. In our method, first, 2D feature points are extracted from both SfM mesh and MLS point cloud. This process consists of ground- and building-plane extraction by region growing, random sample consensus and least square method, vertical edge extraction by detecting intersections between the planes, and feature point extraction by intersection tests between the ground plane and the edges. Then, the corresponding feature points between the MLS point cloud and the SfM mesh are searched efficiently, using similarity invariant features and hashing. Next, the coordinate transformation is applied to the SfM mesh so that the ground planes and corresponding feature points are adjusted. Finally, scaling Iterative Closest Point algorithm is applied for accurate registration. Experimental results for three data-sets show that our method is effective for the registration of SfM mesh and MLS point cloud of urban areas including buildings. [Termes IGN] signal laserRésumé : (auteur) Airborne laser scanning (ALS) is a widely used technology in the mapping of environment and forests. Data acquisition costs and the accuracy of the forest inventory are closely dependent on some extrinsic parameters of the ALS survey. These parameters have been assessed in numerous studies about a decade ago, but since then ALS devices have developed and it is possible that previous findings do not hold true with newer technology. That is why, the effect of flying altitudes (2000, 2500 or 3000 m), scanning angles (±15° and ±20° off nadir) and scanning modes (single- and multiple pulses in air) with the area-based approach using a Leica ALS70HA-laser scanner was studied here. The study was conducted in a managed pine-dominated forest area in Finland, where eight separate discrete-return ALS data were acquired. The comparison of datasets was based on the bootstrap approach with 5-fold cross validation. Results indicated that the narrower scanning angle (±15° i.e. 30°) led to slightly more accurate estimates of plot volume (RMSE%: 21–24 vs. 22.5–25) and mean height (RMSE%: 8.5–11 vs. 9–12). We also tested the use case where the models are constructed using one data and then applied to other data gathered with different parameters. The most accurate models were identified using the bootstrap approach and applied to different datasets with and without refitting. The bias increased without refitting the models (bias%: volume 0 ± 10, mean height 0 ± 3), but in most cases the results did not differ much in terms of RMSE%. This confirms previous observations that models should only be used for datasets collected under similar data acquisition conditions. We also calculated the proportions of echoes as a function of height for different echo categories. This indicated that the accuracy of the inventory is affected more by the height distribution than the proportions of echo categories.
