[Termes IGN] validation des donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) Terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) data-sets are seeing increasing use in geology, geomorphology, forestry and urban mapping. The ease of use, affordability and operational flexibility of TLS suggest that demand for it is likely to increase in large-scale mapping studies. However, its advantages may remain restricted to specific environments, because of difficulties in defining bare-ground level in the presence of ground-level vegetation. This paper seeks to clarify the component contributions to TLS elevation error deriving from vegetation occlusion, scan co-registration error, point cloud georeferencing error and target position definition in TLS point cloud data. A multi-scan single-returns TLS point cloud data-set of very high resolution (~250 points/m2) was acquired for an 11 hectare area of open, substantially flat and 100% vegetated coastal saltmarsh, providing data for the empirical quantification of TLS error. Errors deriving from the sources discussed are quantified, clarifying the potential proportional contribution of vegetation to other error sources. Initial data validation is applied to the TLS point cloud data after application of a local-lowest-point selection process, and repeat validation tests are applied to the resulting filtered point cloud after application of a kriging-based error adjustment and data fusion with GPS. The final results highlight the problem of representing bare ground effectively within TLS data captured in the presence of dense ground vegetation and clarify the component contributions of elevation error deriving from surveying and data processing. [Termes IGN] troncRésumé : (auteur) This paper presents a method for individual tree crown extraction and characterisation from a canopy surface model (CSM). The method is based on a conventional algorithm used for localising LM on a smoothed version of the CSM and subsequently for modelling the tree crowns around each maximum at the plot level. The novelty of the approach lies in the introduction of controls on both the degree of CSM filtering and the shape of elliptic crowns, in addition to a multi-filtering level crown fusion approach to balance omission and commission errors. The algorithm derives the total tree height and the mean crown diameter from the elliptic tree crowns generated. The method was tested and validated on a mountainous forested area mainly covered by mature and even-aged black pine (Pinus nigra ssp. nigra [Arn.]) stands. Mean stem detection per plot, using this method, was 73.97%. Algorithm performance was affected slightly by both stand density and heterogeneity (i.e. tree diameter classes’ distribution). The total tree height and the mean crown diameter were estimated with root mean squared error values of 1.83 m and 1.48 m respectively. Tree heights were slightly underestimated in flat areas and overestimated on slopes. The average crown diameter was underestimated by 17.46% on average. In the aftermath of typhoon Morakot that scourged Southern Taiwan on 8th and 9th august 2009, causing the worst flooding in a century, the authorities realized that the country was dreadfully lacking in detailed, accurate and current elevation data, as well as aerial imagery covering the entire territory (36 000 km2). In response, a national mapping program spanning 2010 to 2015 was launched with the aim of simultaneously capturing the entire country airborne Lidar and digital imagery. The authors discuss specifications, status and challenges posed by this large-scale, long-term project. Comparison and statistical analysis of local slope versus local elevation difference between overlapping surfaces allows for the estimation of both vertical and horizontal offsets between the two surfaces. This method is then used to re-align the flightlines of a Light Detection and Ranging (lidar) dataset collected in southern Idaho resulting in a dataset with significantly higher accuracy than the original. The relative horizontal accuracy is doubled, with a final value of approximately 25 to 30 cm, while the relative vertical accuracy is improved by several centimeters to a final valm of approximately 6 to 7 cm. [Termes IGN] surface de la merRésumé : (Auteur) In July 2007, a new Light Detection And Ranging (LIDAR)-based water-level measurement system was installed at the Harvest platform with the goals of assessing potential drifts in the primary National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) water level (bubbler) system and of providing insight on other environmental conditions which may affect the bubbler accuracy. In addition, the LIDAR provides an independent measure of significant wave height (SWH), which has traditionally been derived from nearby buoys (operated by Scripps and NOAA). The open ocean environment of the Harvest Platform has presented significant challenges. Despite these difficult operating conditions, the LIDAR system has shown promise in being able to assess drift in the bubbler as well as the dependencies on SWH and wind speed. However, a longer time series of data and better environmental condition measurements are needed in order to make an assessment of these parameters with the desired accuracy (e.g., drift to better than 1 mm/yr).
