[Termes IGN] visualisation 3DRésumé : (Auteur) Although the GIS community has been quick to exploit the advantages of virtual reality (VR) for display and analysis of spatial data, VR does not appear to have been exploited widely for remote sensing data analysis. A case study of high resolution lidar data acquired over a deciduous forest near Morgantown, WV was used to investigate the potential and limitations of current VR software for remote sensing analysis. The functionality within a standard remote sensing software package was found to provide a good overview of interpolated, smoothed lidar data, but was less useful for gridded data that had not been interpolated. With gridded data, it was possible to drape orthophotographs or other images over the lidar data, providing a useful method for investigating relationships between lidar and other data. Alternatively, using a commercial VR package, it was possible to view the original lidar point data, and thus visualize the multiple returns from within the canopy of each tree. The point data were preferable for identification of surfaces within the data cloud, especially the ground surface. For a fully integrated remote sensing VR package, functionality will be needed to link point and interpolated coverages, and also to enhance the interactive selection of data for further statistical analysis, Numéro de notice : A2003-100 Affiliation des auteurs : non IGN Thématique : FORET/IMAGERIE Nature : Article nature-HAL : ArtAvecCL-RevueIntern DOI : 10.1080/10106040308542260 En ligne : https://doi.org/10.1080/10106040308542260 Format de la ressource électronique : URL article Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=22396

[Termes IGN] végétationRésumé : (Auteur) Commercial small-footprint lidar remote sensing has become an established tool for the creation of digital terrain models (DTMs). Unfortunately, even ofter the application of lidar vegetation point removal algorithms, vertical DTM error is not uniform and varies according to land cover. This paper presents the results of the application of an adaptive lidar vegetation removal process to a raw lidar dataset of a small area in North Carolina. This process utilized an existing lidar vegetation point removal algorithm in which the parameters were adaptively adjusted based on a vegetation map. The vegetation map was derived through the exclusive use of the lidar dataset, making the process independent of ancillary data. The vertical error and surface form of the resulting DTM were then compared to DTMs created using traditional techniques. The results indicate that the adaptive method produces a superior DTM. [Termes IGN] station de travail de photogrammétrie numériqueRésumé : (Editeur) Photogrammetry is an efficient technique for mapping the topography of larger areas. However, areas such as coniferous forests, housing and flat terrain in open fields have to be completed by tedious and time-consuming ground surveys. The author incorporated laser scanning (LiDAR) to diminish the amount of ground work. LiDAR is the only technique which enables more or less automatic and accurate collection of terrain data over bare ground, even within forests. LIDAR reduces the percentage of areas to be completed by ground surveys from forty to less than ten. Photogrammetric stereo-compilation was also reduced. This led to an increase in throughput by a factor of four to five. However, these figures do not represent all that may eventually be achieved. In this study, an algorithm which estimated position, height, and crown diameter of individual trees was validated with field measurements. Because all the trees in this study were measured on the ground with high accuracy, their positions could be linked with laser measurements, making validation on an individual tree basis possible. In total, 71 percent of the trees were correctly detected using laser scanner data. Because a large portion of the undetected trees had a small stem diameter, 91 percent of the total stem volume was detected. Height and crown diameter of detected trees could be estimated with a root-mean-square error (RMSE) of 0,63 m and 0,61 m, respectively. Stem diameter was estimated, using laser measured tree height and crown diameter, with an RMSE of 3,8 cm. Different laser beam diameters (0,26 to 3,68 m) were also tested, the smallest beam size showing a better detection rate in dense forest. However, estimates of tree height and crown diameter were not affected much by different beam size.
