[Termes IGN] visibilitéRésumé : (Auteur) In this work, we investigate the effectiveness of different types of visibility models for use within location-based services. This article outlines the methodology and results for our experiments, which were designed to understand the accuracy and effects of model choices for mobile visibility querying. Harnessing a novel mobile media consumption and authoring application called Zapp, the levels of accuracy of various digital surface representations used by a line of sight visibility algorithm are extensively examined by statistically assessing randomly sampled viewing sites across the 1 km2 study area, in relation to points of interest (POI) across the University of Nottingham campus. Testing was carried out on three different surface models derived from 0.5 m LiDAR data by visiting physical sites on each surface model with 14 random point of interest masks being viewed from between 10 and 16 different locations, totalling 190 data points. Each site was ground-truthed by determining whether a given POI could be seen by the user and could also be identified by the mobile device. Our experiments in a semi-urban area show that choice of surface model has important implications for mobile applications that utilize visibility in geospatial query operations. [Termes IGN] texture d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) Recent synthetic aperture radar (SAR) sensors with a capability of providing data with varying spatial resolutions, polarizations, and incidence angles have attracted greater interest for forest biomass and carbon storage estimation. This study investigates the capability of RADARSAT-2 fine-beam dual-polarization (C-HV and C-HH) data for forest biomass estimation in complex subtropical forest, with different types of processing: 1) raw intensity data (both polarizations separately and as polarization ratio) and 2) texture parameters of both polarizations (separately, jointly, and as polarization ratio). Field data (diameter at breast height and height) were collected from 53 field plots and converted to biomass (dry weight) using a newly developed allometric model. Finally, biomass estimation models were developed between SAR signatures from different processing steps and field plot biomass using stepwise multiple regression. All biomass estimation models using radar intensity data (C-HV, C-HH, and ratio of C-HV and C-HH) proved ineffective, but texture parameters derived from intensity data showed potential. We were able to estimate forest biomass amounts up to 360 t/ha with a goodness of fit of 0.78 (adjusted r2) and an rmse of 28.68 t/ha using the combination of texture parameters of both polarizations (C-HV and C-HH). However, goodness of fit could be improved to 0.91 (adjusted r2) and an rmse of 26.95 t/ha for biomass levels up to 532 t/ha using the ratio of texture parameters of C-HV/C-HH. The result is very encouraging and indicates that the dual-polarization C-band SAR sensor has a potential for the estimation of forest biomass, particularly using the polarization ratio of texture measurements, and biomass estimation can be improved substantially beyond the previously stated saturation level for C-band SAR. [Termes IGN] température de surfaceRésumé : (Auteur) The thermal infrared hemispherical downwelling irradiance (HDI) emitted by the atmosphere and surrounding elements contributes through reflection to the signal measured over an observed surface by remote sensing. This irradiance must be estimated in order to obtain accurate values of land-surface temperature (LST). There are some fast methods to measure the HDI with a single measurement pointing to the sky at a specified viewing direction, but these methods require completely cloud-free or cloudy skies, and they do not account for the radiative contribution of surrounding elements. Another method is the use of a diffuse reflectance panel (usually, a rough gold-coated surface) with near-Lambertian behavior. This method considers the radiative contribution of surrounding elements and can be used under any sky condition. A third possibility is the use of atmospheric profiles and a radiative transfer code (RTC) in order to simulate the atmospheric signal and to calculate the HDI by integration. This study compares the HDI estimations with these approaches, using measurements made on four different days with a completely clear sky and two days with a partially cloudy sky. The measurements were made with a four-channel CIMEL Electronique radiometer working in the 8–14-u spectral range. The HDI was also estimated by means of National Centers for Environmental Prediction atmospheric profiles introduced in the MODTRAN RTC. Additionally, the measurements were made at two different places with very different environments to quantify the effect of the contributing surroundings. Results showed that, for a clear-sky day with a minimal contribution of the surroundings, all methods differed from each other between 5% and 11%, depending on the spectral range, and any of them could be used to estimate HDI in these conditions. However, in the case of making surface measurements in an area with significant surrounding elements (buildings, trees, etc.), HDI values retrieved from the panel present an increase of +3 W . m-2 . um-1} compared with the other methods; this increase, if ignored, implies to make an error in LST ranging from +0.5°C to +1.5°C, depending on the spectral range and on surface emissivity and temperature. Comparison under heterogeneous skies with changing cloud coverage showed also large differences between the use of panel and the other methods, reaching a maximum difference of +4.6W . m-2 . um-1, which implies to make an error on LST of +2.2°C. In these cases, the use of the diffuse reflectance panel is proposed, since it is the unique way to capture the contribution of the surroundings and also to adequately measure HDI for sky changing conditions. [Termes IGN] tsunamiRésumé : (Auteur) Coastal topography is the principal variable that affects the movement of the tsunami wave on land. Therefore, land surface elevation data are critical to a tsunami model for computing extent of inundation. Elevation data from India's remote sensing satellite CARTOSAT-1 are available for the entire Indian coastline, while elevation data collected using Airborne Laser Terrain Mapper (ALTM) are only available for selected sections of the coastline. This study was carried out to evaluate the suitability of CARTOSAT-1 and ALTM elevation data sets in the tsunami inundation modeling. Two areas of the coastal Tamil Nadu that were severely affected during the December 2004 tsunami and surveyed extensively for mapping the extent of inundation were selected as the study areas. Elevation data sets from ALTM, CARTOSAT-1 and field measurement collected using Real-time Kinematic GPS (RTK-GPS) were compared for these areas. The accuracy of ALTM and CARTOSAT-1 data, the significance of interpolation methods and data used on model outputs were studied. The analysis clearly revealed that the elevation accuracy of CARTOSAT-1 data (+/-2m) was much lower than ALTM data (+/-0.6m). However, it was found that despite the differing elevation accuracy, both ALTM and CARTOSAT-1 can be used to produce tsunami inundation maps for open coasts with an accuracy of 185 m (2 grid cells) at 75% and 50% confidence level, respectively.
