[Termes IGN] validité des donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) The Multispectral Thermal Imager (MTI) satellite is a research and development project sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy. The primary mission is to demonstrate advanced muItispectral and thermal imaging from a satellite, including new technologies, data processing, and analysis techniques and validation by reference to ground truth. The MTI builds on the effort, of a number of earlier efforts, including Landsat, National Aeronautics and Space Administration remote sensing missions, and others, but the MTI incorporates a unique combination of attributes designed to advance the state of the art. The MTI satellite, launched on March 12.2000 into a 580 km x 610 km, sunsynchr onous orbit with nominal 1 A.M. and 1 P.M. equatorial crossing times. The Air Force Space Test Program provided the Orbital Sciences Taurus launch. The satellite-based sensors obtain radiance data that are subsequently processed into measurements of atmospheric and surface properties such as column water vapor, atmospheric aerosol loading, surface temperatures, material composition, and others. This paper provides an overview of the MTI research objectives, design, operations, data products, and data processing and analysis. Several other papers provide greater detail on selected topics. [Termes IGN] réalité de terrainRésumé : (Auteur) A general problem of supervised remotely sensed image classification assumes prior knowledge to be available for all the thematic classes that are present in the considered dataset. However, the ground-truth map representing that prior knowledge usually does not really describe all the land-cover typologies in the image, and the generation of a complete training set often represents a time-consuming, difficult and expensive task. This problem affects the performances of supervised classifiers, which erroneously assign each sample drawn from an unknown class to one of the known classes. In the present paper, a classification strategy is described that allows the identification of samples drawn from unknown classes through the application of a suitable Bayesian decision rule. The proposed approach is based on support vector machines (SVMs) for the estimation of probability density functions and on a recursive procedure to generate prior probability estimates for known and unknown classes. In the experiments, both a synthetic dataset and two real datasets were used. [Termes IGN] SuèdeRésumé : (Auteur) Given the importance of coloured dissolved organic matter (CDOM) for the structure and function of lake ecosystems, a method to estimate the amount of CDOM in lake waters over large geographic areas would be highly desirable. Advanced Land Imager (ALI) images were acquired in southern Finland (in 2002) and southern Sweden (in 2003) together with in situ. measurements of bio-optical properties of 34 lakes (39 measuring stations). Based on this dataset, a band-ratio type algorithm was developed using ALI band 2 and band 3 for estimating CDOM content (absorption of filtrated water at 420 nm) in lakes. Correlation between in situ measured CDOM and the remote sensing estimate of CDOM was high, r2=0 .73. The CDOM retrieval algorithm obtained on the basis of two images and in situ data was validated on a third ALI image (eastern Finland, 2002) that was available in the ALI image archive. In situ water-colour monitoring data from 22 lakes (27 measuring stations) in the third image were available in a database of the Finnish Environment Administration. The water-colour data were converted to CDOM absorption values, which were then compared to the results from a third ALI image. The correlation between remotely estimated and in situ CDOM values in the algorithm validation image was high, r2=0 .83. These results support the conclusion that CDOM content in lakes over a wide range of concentrations (aCDOM(420) between 0.68 and 11.13 m-1) can be mapped using Advanced Land Imager data. [Termes IGN] végétationRésumé : (Auteur) Covering soils with vegetation during the fallow and planting seasons is one of the main ways to reduce water pollution, by restricting pollutant fluxes to aquatic systems. The bare soil/vegetation ratio monitoring can be carried out daily with a coarse spatial resolution using SPOT VEGETATION (1 km). Nevertheless, land-cover changes detected at a regional scale with this ratio may be due to winter vegetation cover changes as well as the influence of climatic events. Therefore, observed changes have to be validated from a local-scale analysis with higher spatial resolution data. The aim of this study is to develop a technique that allows high or low variations detected at a regional scale to be assessed from SPOT VEGETATION images with data acquired at a higher scale, SPOT High Resolution Visible and Infrared images in our case. In this study, the link between the images from the two sensors is achieved from the design of an artificial neural network method based on a Kohonen self-organizing map. The originality of this method lies in the use of external knowledge from ground observations and the use of temporal behavior to solve such a change of scale. Results of testing this method by using a potential change map based on the last few years' land-cover observations have shown a good correspondence between the observed and predicted bare soil/vegetation balance with regards to the spatial resolution difference between the two sensors.
