However, creating 3D maps and keeping them up-to-date using existing technologies, such as laser scanners, is expensive. This paper proposes and implements a novel approach to generate 2.5D (otherwise known as 3D level-of-detail (LOD) 1) maps for free using Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) signals, which are globally available and are blocked only by obstacles between the satellites and the receivers. This enables us to find the patterns of GNSS signal availability and create 3D maps. The paper applies algorithms to GNSS signal strength patterns based on a boot-strapped technique that iteratively trains the signal classifiers while generating the map. Results of the proposed technique demonstrate the ability to create 3D maps using automatically processed GNSS data. The results show that the third dimension, i.e. height of the buildings, can be estimated with below 5 metre accuracy, which is the benchmark recommended by the CityGML standard. [Termes IGN] précipitationRésumé : (auteur) The science guiding the EUREC4A campaign and its measurements are presented. EUREC4A comprised roughly five weeks of measurements in the downstream winter trades of the North Atlantic – eastward and south-eastward of Barbados. Through its ability to characterize processes operating across a wide range of scales, EUREC4A marked a turning point in our ability to observationally study factors influencing clouds in the trades, how they will respond to warming, and their link to other components of the earth system, such as upper-ocean processes or, or the life-cycle of particulate matter. This characterization was made possible by thousands (2500) of sondes distributed to measure circulations on meso (200 km) and larger (500 km) scales, roughly four hundred hours of flight time by four heavily instrumented research aircraft, four global-ocean class research vessels, an advanced ground-based cloud observatory, a flotilla of autonomous or tethered measurement devices operating in the upper ocean (nearly 10000 profiles), lower atmosphere (continuous profiling), and along the air-sea interface, a network of water stable isotopologue measurements, complemented by special programmes of satellite remote sensing and modeling with a new generation of weather/climate models. In addition to providing an outline of the novel measurements and their composition into a unified and coordinated campaign, the six distinct scientific facets that EUREC4A explored – from Brazil Ring Current Eddies to turbulence induced clustering of cloud droplets and its influence on warm-rain formation – are presented along with an overview EUREC4A's outreach activities, environmental impact, and guidelines for scientific practice. [Termes IGN] tomographie par GPSRésumé : (auteur) Computerized ionospheric tomography is an important technique for ionosphere investigation. However, it is an ill-posed problem owing to an insufficient amount of available data, because of which the distributions of ionospheric electron density (IED) cannot be reconstructed accurately. In light of this, the ordered subsets-constrained algebraic reconstruction technique (OS_CART) is developed here using vertical total electron content (VTEC) data to solve this problem, where the VTEC derived from the slant total electron content (STEC) of Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) signal paths is used to compensate for the lack of data provided by GNSS observations in inversion regions, and the OS_CART is also used to improve the spatial resolution and inversion efficiency. The proposed method was validated by conducting numerical experiments using GNSS and independent ionosonde data in both quiescent and disturbed ionospheric conditions. In contrast to classical methods of ionospheric tomography, the proposed method exhibited significantly higher reconstruction accuracy. While delivering a comparable accuracy to that of traditional methods in terms of self-consistency validation using STEC data and without overfitting, the proposed method yielded a more than 90% improvement over the self-consistency validation using VTEC data. In addition, a better daily description of the ionosphere was obtained using the proposed method, where an increase in the peak height and irregular changes to the IED, associated with variations in the number of epochs and the occurrence of magnetic storms, were observed. Overall, the results reveal that the proposed method is a useful tool for research on space weather. In this study, taking GNSS data for the Beijing Fangshan station (BJFS) as an example, based on the method of Pearson correlation coefficient combined with quantitative analysis, GNSS datasets are used to study the relationships between GNSS-derived PWV (GNSS PWV_Met) and its influencing factors, including the internal influencing factors zenith troposphere delay (ZTD), zenith hydrostatic delay (ZHD), zenith wet delay (ZWD), and surface temperature (Ts), and the external influencing factor haze (mainly PM2.5). Firstly, based on the strong correlation between PWV_Met and ZTD hourly sequences from the International GNSS Service Network’s BJFS station for DOYS 182–212, 2015, the results of experiment prove that the reliability of GNSS ZTD is used to forecast PWV_Met in short-term forecasting. Secondly, based on hourly data of BJFS in 2016, the correlation between PWV_Met and ZTD, ZWD, ZHD, pressure (P) and Ts is analyzed, and then, with the rate of ZTD variation as the main factor, ZTD variation as auxiliary factor, the prediction success rate is 88.24% from hourly data of precipitation event for DOYs 183–213 in Beijing. The experiment indicates that ZTD can help forecast short-term precipitation. Thirdly, based on data from three hazy periods with relatively stable weather conditions, no heavy rainfall, and relatively continuous data in the past three years, the correlation between GNSS PWV_Met/ZTD and PM2.5 hourly series is analyzed. The results of the experiments suggests that GNSS ZTD should be considered to assist in haze monitoring. So in the absence of radiosonde stations and meteorological elements, ZTDs on retrieval of GNSS stations have more application value in short-term forecast. [Termes IGN] tomographie par GPSRésumé : (auteur) Computerized ionospheric tomography is a highly ill-posed inverse problem, and regularization tends to stabilize the problem to provide a unique solution. When a regularization method is used, the choice of an optimal parameter is a key issue. In this article, we propose an adaptive regularization method for 3-D ionospheric tomography based on the U-curve. The proposed approach uses a U-curve method to determine the optimal regularization parameter from Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) observation data. Comparative case studies are investigated based on GNSS simulated observations and real measurements. The simulation results indicate that the proposed method is superior to the adaptive regularization method based on the L-curve. In addition, we further validate the tomographic results with actual ionosonde station data. The results demonstrate the reliability and superiority of the proposed method compared to traditional methods.
