[Termes IGN] temps atomique internationalRésumé : (Auteur) The GPS composite clock defines GPS time, the timescale used today in GPS operations. GPS time is illuminated by examination of its role in the complete estimation and control problem relative to UTC/TAI. The phase of each GPS clock is unobservable from GPS pseudorange measurements, and the mean phase of the GPS clock ensemble (GPS time) is unobservable. A new and useful observability definition is presented, together with new observability theorems, to demonstrate explicitly that GPS time is unobservable. Simulated GPS clock phase and frequency deviations, and simulated GPS pseudorange measurements, are used to understand GPS time in terms of Kalman filter estimation errors. [Termes IGN] résiduRésumé : (auteur) For the first time, the ITRF2005 input data are in the form of time series of station positions and Earth orientation parameters, together with full variance-covariance information. The first step of the ITRF2005 analysis consists of rigorously stacking each time series to yield a long-term solution per technique. As a by-product, time series of position residuals contain the nonlinear motion of points over the Earth's surface. In this paper, the height residual time series of very long baseline interferometry (VLBI), Global Positioning System (GPS), and satellite laser ranging (SLR) solutions submitted to ITRF2005 are compared. We note that the interpretation of the ITRF2005 position residual time series as observed physical motions at the various stations is delicate due to the inhomogeneous site distribution. We estimate that the network effect may introduce an averaged scatter of 3 and 2 mm in the VLBI and SLR height residuals, respectively. Although noise levels are different among these three techniques, a common 1.0 cycles per year (cpy) frequency is clearly detected. The GPS height annual signal exhibits significant regional correlations that are confirmed by VLBI and SLR measurements in some colocated sites. Significant power near frequencies 2.00, 3.12, and 4.16 cpy is also detected in the individual GPS height residuals time series as mentioned by Ray et al. (2007). However, neither VLBI nor SLR show any significant signals at these frequencies for colocated sites. The agreement between detrended height time series at colocated sites is quantified using a novel method based on Kalman filtering and on maximum likelihood estimation. The GPS and VLBI measurements are shown to agree fairly well for most of the colocated sites. However, agreement is not generally observed in the GPS and SLR comparisons. A study of the interannual signal at colocated sites indicates that the good correlation cannot be completely attributed to the annual harmonic. [Termes IGN] récepteur GPSRésumé : (Auteur) The development and numerical values of the new absolute phase-center correction model for GPS receiver and satellite antennas, as adopted by the International GNSS (global navigation satellite systems) Service, are presented. Fixing absolute receiver antenna phase-center corrections to robot-based calibrations, the GeoForschungsZentrum Potsdam (GFZ) and the Technische Universität München reprocessed more than 10 years of GPS data in order to generate a consistent set of nadir-dependent phase-center variations (PCVs) and offsets in the z-direction pointing toward the Earth for all GPS satellites in orbit during that period. The agreement between the two solutions estimated by independent software packages is better than 1 mm for the PCVs and about 4 cm for the z-offsets. In addition, the long time-series facilitates the study of correlations of the satellite antenna corrections with several other parameters such as the global terrestrial scale or the orientation of the orbital planes with respect to the Sun. Finally, completely reprocessed GPS solutions using different phase-center correction models demonstrate the benefits from switching from relative to absolute antenna phase-center corrections. For example, tropospheric zenith delay biases between GPS and very long baseline interferometry (VLBI), as well as the drift of the terrestrial scale, are reduced and the GPS orbit consistency is improved. It is shown that WVMR estimates can be biased by a small percentage at low signal photon-counting rates due to fluctuations in the nitrogen signal in the denominator of the ratio, the magnitude of the bias being linked to the signal-to-noise ratio of the nitrogen signal. This is particularly important when unbiased estimates are required as in the case of climate studies and global positioning system (GPS) signal calibration. Different bias corrections and a modified ratio formulation are proposed in order to correct or eliminate this bias. The method is successfully applied in processing signals obtained with an experimental Raman lidar system devoted to calibrate GPS signals for slant path delays. It is shown to reduce biases into negligible values in both WVMR and wet path delay estimates in the range interval of 0–7 km.
