[Termes IGN] récepteurRésumé : (Auteur) Geodetic VLBI delivers baseline length and Earth orientation parameter measurements, which offer the most viable and precise way to study Earth crustal and core dynamics and to support space navigation. The precision of these geodetic and astrometric measurements is degraded by instrumental errors of which polarization leakage is one of the larger. Its effect can be corrected in the data provided one knows the leakage characteristics of the stations. In this work I introduce the concept of polarization, why it needs to be considered in the geodetic analysis and present a VLBI experiment that measured the polarization leakage at 16 geodetic and VLBA stations over the frequency range 8212.99 MHz to 8932.99 MHz and 2225.99 MHz to 2365.99 MHz. I describe resulting polarization leakage measurements and the algorithm that was implemented to correct for their effect on the geodetic delay measurables. I applied the correction for polarization leakage to a routine geodetic VLBI experiment and check for the resulting improvement. Prom the measured leakage terms, one would expect polarization leakage to affect the group delay measurements by 0.5 ps to 7 ps, depending on the stations involved in the baseline. This proved to be below the statistical noise in a single VLBI experiment and so the improvement from the correction could not be detected. Polarization leakage was found, unexpectedly, not the dominant source of non-closing errors. [Termes IGN] valeur aberranteRésumé : (Auteur) In this thesis, it is shown that combining contributions of different VLBI analysis centers, a so called intra-technique combination, improves the robustness and stability of the final VLBI results. For this purpose, a refined combination method has been developed which is in many theoretical and practical aspects superior to combination approaches currently used for comparable geodetic combination tasks. For example, datum-free normal equation systems are used as input, which ensure that the contributions are not deformed by any constraints at all, and the same underlying terrestrial reference frame can be applied during the combination process. Furthermore, a statistically rigorous variance component estimation approach for the relative weighting of the contributions is used. The combination process implies detailed comparisons and analyses of the individual ACs' contributions. From these, as one of the outcomes of this thesis, several systematic differences between the individual contributions were detected and eliminated. The adherence to standards was considerably improved. The combination process itself reduces the "analyst's noise" and damps the impact of outliers. Validations with independent results of other space-geodetic techniques confirm a benefit of up to 15% more accurate results than from individual solutions. Another aspect of this thesis is the general problem of any intra-technique combination, the correlations between the individual contributions. So far, the contributions of different ACs are always treated as independent data sets, although they have been derived from virtually the same set of original observations. It is shown that correlations between the individual ACs' contributions can be determined and rigorously taken in account during the combination process if the combination is performed directly on the level of the observation equations, instead on the level of normal equation systems. The main effect of considering these correlations is that the formal errors of the estimated combined parameters are considerably more realistic, but the parameters as such remain unchanged within their formal errors. [Termes IGN] transformation de coordonnéesRésumé : (auteur) The International Terrestrial Reference Frame (ITRF), the Earth Orientation Parameter (EOP) time series, and the International Celestial Reference Frame are obtained separately and may thus present inconsistencies. To solve this problem, a first step has been made with the latest ITRF realization (ITRF2005), which has been computed, for the first time, with consistent EOP time series. Another approach to better understand this issue is to directly estimate, in the same process, station positions and EOP time series, from all the space-geodetic measurements. In the framework of the French Groupe de Recherche de Géodésie Spatiale (GRGS) activities, this latter approach has been studied for several years. For this purpose, the observations of VLBI, SLR, GPS, and DORIS techniques are combined using the same models and software for all the individual data processing. In this paper, we study methodological issues regarding the definition and the consistency of the weekly combined terrestrial frames. [Termes IGN] rotation de la TerreRésumé : (Auteur) Due to the temporal resolution of available numerical weather analyses, the effect of the atmosphere on Earth rotation at daily and sub-daily periods is usually investigated using 6-hourly atmospheric angular momentum (AAM) functions. During the period of CONT08, however, atmospheric analysis data were provided by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) also on an hourly basis. In this paper, we, therefore, determine two sets of AAM functions from ECMWF data—one for CONT08 with hourly resolution and one for the year 2008 with 6-hourly resolution. The comparisons of the AAM functions to high-resolution Earth rotation parameters (ERP) from VLBI and GPS observations are carried out in the frequency domain. Special attention is paid to the preparation of the high-resolution data sets for the geodetic purposes, as there are jump discontinuities at 12 h intervals. Hence, the hourly AAM functions need to be concatenated. The revised functions yield much smaller amplitudes than their 6-hourly counterparts, as can be seen from the equatorial and the axial frequency spectra of atmospheric excitation in Earth rotation. This decrease of spectral power in the hourly AAM functions is found to be associated with a strong counteraction of pressure and wind terms, which originates from atmospheric circulation on short time scales. The results are compared to previous findings published by Brzezin'ski and Petrov (IERS Tech Note 28:53–60, 2000) based on the data from the U.S. National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP).
