[Termes IGN] traitement parallèleRésumé : (Auteur) Parallel processing comprises the concurrent use of multiple processors to speed execution of one operation. Although techniques suited to most of the common geographical data models have been prototyped, the prominent exception has been vector topology. This paper explores whether operations that create a vectortopological dataset can benefit from parallelisation. It describes techniques for using multiple processors concurrently to create vectortopology for multiple subareas, and for stitching these subareas together to form the resultant dataset. To achieve performance gains over sequential processing, the overhead of the stitching must be less than the gains from the parallel processing of subareas. These methods are tested in the context of the conversion of raster data to polygonal vectortopology. Speedup in comparison to singleprocessor performance is achieved on both a 4processor sharedmemory Sun server and using up to 15 processors of a Cray T3E. The approach taken hides the parallelism and the management of the vectortopology in a software framework that simplifies the task of parallel application development. [Termes IGN] seuillage d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) In mapping organizations, the implementation of more automation coupled with the availability of heterogeneous data requires the investigation, adaptation and evaluation of new approaches and techniques. The demand for rapid mapping operations such as database generation and updating is continuously increasing. Due to the rising use of raster data, image analysis techniques have been investigated and tested in this study to introduce automation in the assessment of scanned topographic monochrome maps and Landsat 7 ETM+ imagery for feature separation and extraction in northern Canada. The work focuses on the detection and extraction of lakes predominant features in the North as well as on to their spatiotemporal comparison. Various approaches using digital image processing techniques were implemented and evaluated. Thresholding and texture measures were used to evaluate the potential of rapid extraction of certain topographic elements from scanned monochrome maps of northern Canada. A raster to vector approach (R> V) followed for the vectorization of these extracted features. The extraction of features from Landsat 7 ETM+ imagery involved image and theme enhancement by applying various image fusion and spectral transformations (e.g., Brovey, PC1IMGFUSE, intensity hue saturation (IHS), principal component analysis (PCA), Tasseled Cap, Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI)), followed by image classification and thresholding. Tests showed that the approaches were more or less featuredependent, while, at the same time, they can augment and significantly enhance the conventional topographic mapping methods. Following the analysis of the map and image data, change detection between two lake datasets was performed both interactively and in an automated mode based on the nonintersection of old and new features. The various approaches and methodology developed and implemented within a GIS environment along with examples, results and limitations are presented and discussed. [Termes IGN] Triangulated Irregular NetworkRésumé : (Auteur) This paper deals with the enrichment of Triangulated Irregular Networks (TIN) with linear vector data such as roads, orography and hydrology, or with surfacic vector data such as buildings and lakes. On the real ground, these features locally modify the relief intensively. We want to integrate these micro-reliefs in the TIN. In particular, this is the case of roads, frequently made with excavation/embankment, or dikes. Moreover, some of these objects follow physical rules. Our aim is to rectify the TIN on the basis of such rules. We know, for example, that rivers always flow in talwegs and always downhill. Simply placing vector geographical objects on a TIN generally gives unrealistic results. For example, we can often see rivers running uphill because of bad integration. Our aim is to integrate 3D geographical objects in a TIN in order to compute an accurate TIN, ressembling ground reality as much as possible. [Termes IGN] visualisation dynamiqueRésumé : (Auteur) In recent years, the visualization of geospatial data has undergone dramatic and important developments. Next to static maps, nowadays, immersive and highly interactive virtual environments can be used to explore and present dynamic geospatial data. Additionally, the World Wide Web has developed into a prominent medium to disseminate geospatial data and maps. In visualizing geospatial data, methods and techniques from fields, such as scientific visualization and information visualization, are applied because of the large volumes of data at hand. This has accumulated in what is known as geovisualization the use of visual geospatial displays to explore data and through that exploration to generate hypotheses, develop problem solutions and construct knowledge. Maps and other linked graphics play a key role in this process. The objective of this paper is to demonstrate the usefulness of geovisualization and, in particular, how alternative graphic representations can stimulate the visual thought process. This is demonstrated by applying geovisualization techniques to Minard's wellknown map of Napoleon's 1812 campaign into Russia, the "Carte figurative des pertes successives en hommes de I'Armée Française dans la campagne de Russie 1812-1813" (http://www.itc.nFpersonal/kraak/1812/).
