[Termes IGN] modélisation de la forêtRésumé : (Auteur) The estimation of above ground biomass in forests is critical for carbon cycle modeling and climate change mitigation programs. Small footprint lidar provides accurate biomass estimates, but its application in tropical forests has been limited, particularly in Africa. Hyperspectral data record canopy spectral information that is potentially related to forest biomass. To assess lidar ability to retrieve biomass in an African forest and the usefulness of including hyperspectral information, we modeled biomass using small footprint lidar metrics as well as airborne hyperspectral bands and derived vegetation indexes. Partial Least Square Regression (PLSR) was adopted to cope with multiple inputs and multicollinearity issues; the Variable of Importance in the Projection was calculated to evaluate importance of individual predictors for biomass. Our findings showed that the integration of hyperspectral bands (R2 = 0.70) improved the model based on lidar alone (R2 = 0.64), this encouraging result call for additional research to clarify the possible role of hyperspectral data in tropical regions. Replacing the hyperspectral bands with vegetation indexes resulted in a smaller improvement (R2 = 0.67). Hyperspectral bands had limited predictive power (R2 = 0.36) when used alone. This analysis proves the efficiency of using PLSR with small-footprint lidar and high resolution hyperspectral data in tropical forests for biomass estimation. Results also suggest that high quality ground truth data is crucial for lidar-based AGB estimates in tropical African forests, especially if airborne lidar is used as an intermediate step of upscaling field-measured AGB to a larger area. Pine and spruce trees are scanned using the multiscan approach in the field, and trees are felled to measure them destructively for the purpose of obtaining reference values. The stem curves are automatically retrieved from laser point clouds, resulting in an accuracy of ~1 cm. The corresponding manual measurements yield similar accuracy but fewer measurements at the upper parts of tree stems, compared with the automated measurements. The stem volumes based on stem curve data and field measurements and the best Finnish national allometric volume equations (using tree species, height, and diameters at heights of 1.3 and 6 m as predictors) result in similar accuracy. The measurement accuracy of the stem curves and stem volumes is similar for both pine and spruce trees. The results of this paper confirm the feasibility of using TLS to produce stem curve data in an automated, accurate and noninvasive way and indicate that the point cloud provides adequate information to accurately derive stem volumes from standing trees. The stem curves and volumes retrieved from point clouds can be employed in various forest management activities, such as the calibration of national or regional allometric curve functions and the prediction of profits in preharvest inventories. A breakthrough in this quest was one of the highlights of last year's Intergeo expo in Essen, Germany. Geoconnexion talks to Dr George Skrobanski, CTO of Arithmetica, about the game-changing development. [Termes IGN] site archéologiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Nowadays there is a huge proliferation of fully automatic image-based solutions producing either three-dimensional (3D) point clouds or 3D models. However, the reliability of the output is not usually reported and clarified. This paper presents a comparison of the 3D modelling results achieved on two rock art shelters at separate archaeological sites using a high-resolution digital camera. The 3D point clouds were produced using automatic image-based photogrammetric and computer vision software running either locally (FOTOGIFLE and VisualSFM) or through a web-based reconstruction service (Autodesk 123D Catch). The first two automatic approaches are compared with a manual bundle block adjustment. Dense image matching was undertaken to densify the point clouds prior to 3D modelling. The derived 3D models are compared with a time-of-flight laser scanning dataset that was used as ground truth. Statistical analysis shows significant metric differences on the digital surface models for the different solutions.
