[Termes IGN] Wadden, mer desRésumé : (Auteur) The Wadden Sea is a unique habitat formed by the strong influence of tidal currents. Twice a day the area is flooded and falls dry afterwards. Due to the force of tidal streams, strong morphologic changes occur frequently. In order to monitor these changes, high precision digital terrain models (DTMs) are required. Lidar proved to be an adequate technique to deliver highly accurate 3D mass points of the surface and dense spacing. However, water often remains within tidal channels and depressions even at low tide, and near infrared lidar is not able to penetrate the water leading to a point cloud which contains surface and water points. Thus, the standard processing workflow for DTM generation from lidar is not suited for the Wadden Sea. In this article, a new workflow is proposed for DTM generation from lidar data in the Wadden Sea. Two major building blocks of this workflow, namely classification of the water points and structure line detection, are presented in detail. For both tasks suitable algorithms were developed tailored to meet special requirements of mudflat. Lidar measurements from water surfaces are detected by a supervised fuzzy classification using the features height, intensity, and 2D point density. Structure lines are derived through a piecewise reconstruction of the surface from the lidar data with a hyperbolic tangent function. The obtained results show that both methods considerably improve the accuracy of DTMs from lidar data. [Termes IGN] Triangulated Irregular NetworkRésumé : (Auteur) We integrate lidar point clouds and large-scale vector maps to perform building modeling. The proposed scheme comprises three major steps: (a) the preprocessing of lidar point clouds and vector maps, (b) roof analysis, and (c) building reconstruction. During the preprocessing stage, the building polygons are first obtained from the polylines, followed by the selections of lidar points in the building polygons. An irregular triangulated network is then built to represent the facets. The segmentation of planar facets for roof analysis is implemented by examining the patch size and the facet orientation. The interior 3D roof edges are then determined from the intersection of the roof planes. Finally, the building models are reconstructed through regularization. Two sample sites are tested for the purposes of validation. The experimental results indicate that the proposed scheme allows for high fidelity and accuracy, provided that the point cloud density is enough. [Termes IGN] semis de pointsRésumé : (Auteur) A lidar filtering technique is used to differentiate on-terrain points and off-terrain points from a cloud of 3D point data collected by a lidar system. A major issue of concern in this low-level filter is to design a methodology to ensure a continual adaptation to variations of terrain slopes and object scales. In this paper, a new lidar filtering technique which hierarchically fragments lidar data into piecewise planar terrain models is introduced. Once a number of hypothetical planar terrain models are generated to fit the terrain surface of the underlying area, the optimal terrain model to produce the minimum labelling errors is determined based on minimum description length (MDL) principles. This hypothesis-verification optimisation is achieved in a coarse-to-fine strategy by which the entire terrain surface is incrementally reconstructed by increasing the number of planar terrain models fitted. The proposed technique was successfully applied to a digital surface model provided within an OEEPE lidar trial, showing 0·94% of Type I errors and 6·75% of Type II errors compared to manually classified reference data. [Termes IGN] télémétrie laser aéroportéRésumé : (Auteur) Small-footprint full-waveform airborne laser scanning (ALS) is a remote sensing technique capable of mapping vegetation in three dimensions with a spatial sampling of about 0.5-2 m in all directions. This is achieved by scanning the laser beam across the Earth's surface and by emitting nanosecond-long infrared pulses with a high frequency of typically 50-150 kHz. The echo signals are digitized during data acquisition for subsequent off-line waveform analysis. In addition to delivering the three-dimensional (3D) coordinates of scattering objects such as leaves or branches, full-waveform laser scanners can be calibrated for measuring the scattering properties of vegetation and terrain surfaces in a quantitative way. As a result, a number of physical observables are obtained, such as the width of the echo pulse and the backscatter cross-section, which is a measure of the electromagnetic energy intercepted and re-radiated by objects. The main aim of this study was to build up an understanding of the scattering characteristics of vegetation and the underlying terrain. It was found that vegetation typically causes a broadening of the backscattered pulse, while the backscatter cross-section is usually smaller for canopy echoes than for terrain echoes. These scattering properties allowed classification of the 3D point cloud into vegetation and non-vegetation echoes with an overall accuracy of 89.9% for a dense natural forest and 93.7% for a baroque garden area. In addition, by removing the vegetation echoes before the filtering process, the quality of the digital terrain model could be improved. [Termes IGN] télémétrie laser terrestreRésumé : (Auteur) Terrestrial laser scanners find rapidly growing interest in photogrammetry as efficient tools for fast and reliable three-dimensional (3D) point cloud data acquisition. They have opened a wide range of application fields within a short period of time. Beyond interactive measurement in 3D point clouds, techniques for the automatic detection of objects and the determination of geometric parameters form a high priority research issue. With the quality of 3D point clouds generated by laser scanners and the automation potential in data processing, terrestrial laser scanning is also becoming a useful tool for forest inventory. This paper presents a brief review of current laser scanner systems from a technological point of view and discusses different scanner technologies and system parameters regarding their suitability for forestry applications. Methods for the automatic detection of trees in terrestrial laser scanner data as well as the automatic determination of diameter at breast height (DBH), tree height and 3D stem profiles are outlined. Reliability and precision of the techniques are analysed on the basis of several pilot studies. In these pilot studies more than 97% of the trees could be detected correctly, and DBH could be determined with a precision of about 1.8 cm.
