[Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (Auteur) In this paper, we address the problem of generating building footprints using terrestrial laser scanning from a Mobile Mapping System (MMS). The MMS constitutes a fast and adapted tool to extract precise data for 3D city modeling. Urban environments evolve over time due to human activities and other factors. Buildings are constructed or destroyed and the urban areas are extended. Therefore, the structures of the cities are constantly modified. Currently, building footprints can be generated using aerial data. However, aerial based footprints lack precision due to the nature of the data and to the associated extraction methods. The use of MMS is proposed as an alternative to perform this complex task. In this work, we propose an operational approach for automatic extraction of accurate building footprints. We describe the challenges associated with the terrestrial laser raw data acquired in realistic and dense urban environments. After a filtering stage on the 3D laser cloud point, we extract and reconstruct the dominant facade planes by combining the Hough transform, the k-means clustering algorithm and the RANSAC method. The building footprint is then estimated from these dominant planes. Preliminary experimental results are presented and discussed. The assessments show that this approach is very promising for the automation of building footprints extraction. [Termes IGN] traitement du signalRésumé : (Auteur) Airborne laser scanning (ALS) is an active remote sensing technique providing range data as 3D point clouds. This paper aims at presenting a survey of the literature related to such techniques, with emphasis on the new sensors called full-waveform lidar systems. Indeed, an emitted laser pulse interacts with complex natural and man-made objects leading to a temporal distortion of the returned energy profile. The new technology of full-waveform laser scanning systems permits one to digitize the complete waveform of each backscattered pulse. Full-waveform lidar data give more control to an end-user in the interpretation process of the physical measurement and provide additional information about the structure and the physical backscattering characteristics of the illuminated surfaces. In this paper, the theoretical principles of full-waveform airborne laser scanning are first described. Afterwards, a review of the main sensors as well as signal processing techniques are presented. We then discuss the interpretation of full-waveform measures with special interest on vegetated and urban areas. [Termes IGN] visualisation 3DRésumé : (Auteur) Full-waveform (FW) lidar systems provide range profiles of the Earth topography. They are acquired from airborne platforms or from satellites. Many applications derive from the use of such data, from the extraction of 3D point clouds to the inversion of vegetation profiles. Nevertheless, handling range profiles is much more difficult than handling 3D point cloud. The aim of this paper is to present a research tool based on opensource libraries that can process and visualize such data. We focused our work on the implementation on the 2D/3D interface that gives the possibility to visualize the interaction between the lidar electromagnetic waves and the Earth topography. Moreover, this tool integrates several processing steps of FW Lidar data. [Termes IGN] surveillance d'ouvrageRésumé : (Auteur) In the last few years, LIDAR and image-matching techniques have been employed in many application fields because of their quickness in point cloud generation. Nevertheless, these techniques do not assure complete and reliable results, especially in complex applications such as architectural surveys: laser scanning techniques do not allow the correct position of object breaklines to be extracted while image matching results require an accurate editing and they are not acceptable for bad-textured images. For this reason several authors have already suggested overcoming of these problems through a combination of LIDAR and photogrammetric techniques. These works considers the integration as the possibility to share point clouds generated by these techniques; however, a complete and automatic integration, in order to achieve more complete information, has never been implemented. In this paper, a new integration approach is proposed. This integration is focused on the possibility of overcoming the problems of each technique. In this approach LIDAR and multi-image matching techniques combine and share information in order to extract building breaklines in the space, perform the point cloud segmentation and speed up the modelling process in an automatic way. This integration is still an ongoing process: the algorithm workflow and first performed tests on real facades are presented in this paper, in order to evaluate the reliability of the proposed method; finally, an overview on the future developments is offered.
