[Termes IGN] test de performanceRésumé : (Auteur) Laser technology is the flagship for producing accurate digital 3D representations of objects, but other techniques are also widely used, one of which is structured light scanning. The authors discuss the characteristics of this accurate measuring technique, used primarily for indoor, close-range applications. They also tested a commercially available structured light camera and found the accuracy in line with the manufacturer’s claim of 50 micrometres. [Termes IGN] télémètre laser aéroportéRésumé : (Auteur) The recent Intergeo 2010 conference and trade fair and ELMF 2010 forum and exhibition have both served to highlight the many new developments that have been tacking place in airborne topographic laser scanners. Indeed, as result of all of this activity and innovation, airborne laser scanning is a booming sector of the mapping industry and flourishing area for the system suppliers. This article discusses the main advances that occur in the technology and presents an overview and survey of those systems that are operational and are currently available on the market. [Termes IGN] télémétrie laser aéroportéRésumé : (Auteur) This paper presents a novel low-cost mini-UAV-based laser scanning system, which is also capable of performing car-based mobile mapping. The quality of the system and its feasibility for tree measurements was tested using the system’s laser scanner. The system was constructed as a modular measurement system consisting of a number of measurement instruments: a GPS/IMU positioning system, two laser scanners, a CCD camera, a spectrometer and a thermal camera. An Ibeo Lux and a Sick LMS151 profile laser were integrated into the system to provide dense point clouds; intensities of the reflected echoes can also be obtained with the Sick LMS. In our tests, when using a car as a platform, the pole-type object extraction algorithm which was developed resulted in 90% completeness and 86% correctness. The heights of pole-type objects were obtained with a bias of -1.6 cm and standard deviation of 5.4 cm. Using a mini-UAV as the platform, the standard deviation of individual tree heights was about 30 cm. Also, a digital elevation model extraction was tested with the UAV data, resulting in a height offset of about 3.1 cm and a standard deviation of 9.2 cm. With a multitemporal point cloud, we demonstrated a method to derive the biomass change of a coniferous tree with an R2 value of 0.92. The proposed system is capable of not only recording point cloud data giving the geometry of the objects, but also simultaneously collecting image data, including overlapping images and the intensity of laser backscatter, as well as hyperspectral and thermal data. Therefore we believe that the system is feasible for new algorithm and concept development and for basic research, especially when data is recorded multitemporally. [Termes IGN] télémètre laser terrestreRésumé : (auteur) We are currently developing a vision-based system aiming to perform a fully automatic pipeline for in situ photorealistic three-dimensional (3D) modeling of previously unknown, complex and unstructured underground environments. Since in such environments navigation sensors are not reliable, our system embeds only passive (camera) and active (laser) 3D vision senors. Laser Range Finders are particularly well suited for generating dense 3D maps by aligning multiples scans acquired from different viewpoints. Nevertheless, nowadays Iteratively Closest Point (ICP)-based scan matching techniques rely on heavy human operator intervention during a post-processing step. Since a human operator cannot access the site, these techniques are not suitable in high-risk underground environments. This paper presents an automatic on-line scan matcher able to cope with the nowadays 3D laser scanners’ architecture and to process either intensity or depth data to align scans, providing robustness with respect to the capture device. The proposed implementation emphasizes the portability of our algorithm on either single or multi-core embedded platforms for on-line mosaicing onboard 3D scanning devices. The proposed approach addresses key issues for in situ 3D modeling in difficult-to-access and unstructured environments and solves for the 3D scan matching problem within an environment-independent solution. Several tests performed in two prehistoric caves illustrate the reliability of the proposed method.
