Fashioning a truck-back system, Canadian engineers used GPS and inertial measurement to time and locate the laser-ranging "hits" that would construct a digital elevation model of the badly damaged highway. The return to an earlier prototype now affords a quick, cost-effective solution for other survey situations. [Termes IGN] Tokyo (Japon)Résumé : (Auteur) The Vehicle-borne Laser Measurement System (VLMS) is a mobile mapping system where three single-row laser range scanners, six line CCD cameras, and a GPS/INS-based navigation unit are mounted on a van to measure object geometry and texture along a street. This paper contributes to a method of fusing the data output of VLMS with existing geographic data sources where the focus is on the rectification of the vehicle's motion data derived from GPS/INS, which may be quite erroneous in an urban area. An algorithm is developed to correct the four variables of the vehicle's motion data, i.e., x, y, and z coordinates of the vehicle position and yaw angle of orientation by registering the laser points of the VLMS with an existing data source, e.g., a DSM. The algorithm was examined using the VLMS data that were taken in the Ginza District, Tokyo. By manually assigning 18 sets of tie-points, the vehicle's motion data were corrected automatically and efficiently, such that the laser points of VLMS were matched to a DSM. In data fusion, a set of objects, which contained commercial signboards, traffic signs and signals, road boundaries, and road lights were extracted from the corrected VLMS data using an interface described in a previous paper. They were integrated with a 1:2500 3D map that consists of only building frames. In addition, line images from the VLMS were projected onto the building facades of the 3D Map, and textures were generated automatically. The objects to be measured must not be accessible for the few minutes of continuous data acquisition, as they should be in the case of photogrammetric recording techniques. The scanning instruments are able, however, to ensure data acquisition rates of over 1000 discrete points per second.
In addition to the introduction to the technology of scanning polar measuring systems, this work deals with the development of suitable algorithms for the acceleration of the measurement and evaluation process. In the context of the calibration of scanning polar measuring systems with tachymetric measuring principles, special aspects are considered in the sub-field of structured geometry data acquisition, and the difficulties in combining sets of data from individual instrument points of view.
The combination of the readings from different instrument points of view in a standard primary system can be seen as a time-consuming factor in the evaluation of data from scanning measuring systems. Through the use of the procedure described in this work a reduction of the required evaluation time can be reached. By an automated extraction of iso-levels from the point clouds and a subsequent automatic assignment of the identities using projective transformations, the resulting iso-levels can be inspected with respect to the linked systern instrument points of view. The additional marking and subsequent measurement of reference points can therefore be avoided.
The development of an appropriate calibration method for scanning polar measuring systems based on tachymetric measuring principles is a second central point of this work. Special attention is given in this work to the regulation of systematic deviations and the precision details of the various integrated sensors. A system calibration method based on an extension of existing calibration procedures is proposed. Building on the point connection algorithms, a calibration method is introduced. This uses iso-levels and the help of the adjustment algorithm to estimate calibration parameters, as well as the precision of the measuring instruments. In conclusion, the efficiency and bounds of the calibration approach are examined and evaluated using measurements from two different laser scanners.

[Termes IGN] modèle de régressionRésumé : (Auteur) This paper proposes a new filtering method of non-ground measurements from airborne LIDAR data through a Simultaneous Auto-Regressive (SAR) analytical model and exploiting a Foward Search (FS) algorithm. In SAR models, with respect to classical spatial regression models, the correlation among adjacent measured points is taken into account, by considering two quantities for the measured dataset : a coefficient of spatial interaction and matrix of point adjacency (binary digits for regular grids or real numbers for irregular ones). The method has been implemented using Matlab® language and applied either to differently simulated LIDAR datasets or really measured points, these last acquired with an Optech® ALTM 3033 system in the city of Gorizia (North-east Italy).
