[Termes IGN] tâche claireRésumé : (auteur) Volunteer-contributed geographic data (VGI) is an important source of geospatial big data that support research and applications. A major concern on VGI data quality is that the underlying observation processes are inherently biased. Detecting observation hot-spots thus helps better understand the bias. Enabled by the parallel kernel density estimation (KDE) computational tool that can run on multiple GPUs (graphics processing units), this study conducted point pattern analyses on tens of millions of iNaturalist observations to detect and visualize volunteers’ observation hot-spots across spatial scales. It was achieved by setting varying KDE bandwidths in accordance with the spatial scales at which hot-spots are to be detected. The succession of estimated density surfaces were then rendered at a sequence of map scales for visual detection of hot-spots. This study offers an effective geovisualization scheme for hierarchically detecting hot-spots in massive VGI datasets, which is useful for understanding the pattern-shaping drivers that operate at multiple spatial scales. This research exemplifies a computational tool that is supported by high-performance computing and capable of efficiently detecting and visualizing multi-scale hot-spots in geospatial big data and contributes to expanding the toolbox for geospatial big data analytics. LandSense aims to build a citizen observatory for Land Use and Land Cover (LULC) monitoring by proposing innovate technologies for data collection, change detection, data quality assessment and offering tools and systems to empower different communities (e.g., private companies, Non Governmental Organisation, National Mapping Agencies, research, public authorities) to monitor and report on LULC. The workshop was co-organized by the LASTIG laboratory of the University Gustave Eiffel and IGN-ENSG, the French National Mapping agency (Ana-Maria Olteanu-Raimond, Clément Mallet, Bénédicte Bucher), the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (Joep Crompvoets), the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (Inian Moorthy) and EuroSDR. [Termes IGN] système d'information historiqueRésumé : (auteur) We collected 92,832 user-contributed and publicly available family trees from rootsweb.com, including 250 million individuals who were born in North America and Europe between 1630 and 1930. We cleaned and connected the family trees to create a population-scale and longitudinal family tree dataset using a workflow of data collection and cleaning, geocoding, fuzzy record linkage and a relation-based iterative search for connecting trees and deduplication of records. Given the largest connected component of nearly 40 million individuals, and a total of 80 million individuals, we generated, to date, the largest population-scale and longitudinal geo-social network over centuries. We evaluated the representativeness of the family tree dataset for historical population demography and mobility by comparing the data to the 1880 Census. Our results showed that the family trees were biased towards males, the elderly, farmers, and native-born white segments of the population. Individuals were highly mobile – in our 1880 sample of parent-child pairs where both were born in the U.S., 47% were born in different states. Our findings agreed with prior studies that people migrated from East to West in horizontal bands, and the trend was reflected in the dialects and regional structure of the U.S. Numéro de notice : A2021-876 Affiliation des auteurs : non IGN Thématique : GEOMATIQUE Nature : Article nature-HAL : ArtAvecCL-RevueIntern DOI : 10.1080/13658816.2020.1821885 Date de publication en ligne : 30/09/2020 En ligne : https://doi.org/10.1080/13658816.2020.1821885 Format de la ressource électronique : URL article Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=99139

[Termes IGN] service écosystémiqueRésumé : (auteur) A boom in volunteered geographic information has led to extensive data-driven exploration and modeling of places. While many studies have used such data to explore human-environment interaction in urban settings, few have investigated natural, non-urban settings. To address this gap, this study systematically explores the content of online reviews of nature-based recreation activities, and develops a fine-grained hierarchical model that includes 28 aspects grouped into three main domains: activity, settings, and emotions/cognition. It further demonstrates how the model can be used to explore the variation in recreation experiences across activities, setting the stage for the analysis of the spatio-temporal variations in recreation experiences in the future. Importantly, the study provides an annotated corpus that can be used as a training dataset for developing methods to automatically capture aspects of recreation experiences in texts.
