[Vedettes matières IGN] GéovisualisationRésumé : (Auteur) Polygonal vector data are important for representing countries, lakes, residential settlements, and other polygonal features. The proper representation of polygonal vector data is the basis of efficient rendering and picking and quick access and display of the analysis results based on polygons (e.g., 3D overlaying and surface area measurement in mountainous areas) in a virtual globe. However, polygonal vector data are displayed using texture-based or boundary-based approaches in most existing virtual globes. The texture-based approach cannot easily support interactive operations (e.g., picking) and spatial analysis (e.g., adjacency analysis and spatial measurement). The boundary-based approach treats the holes as independent features; however, it is difficult to recognize which boundaries constitute a polygon. Further research is needed on how to better organize the polygons to support efficient rendering, picking, and analysis in a virtual globe. In this article, we propose two methods to drape interior filled 2D polygons onto a multi-resolution 3D terrain. Both proposed methods combine polygon clipping and polygon triangulation. The difference between the two methods is in the way holes are eliminated. Method 1 recursively subdivides a terrain triangle until the child-triangles contain no holes; every resulting clipped polygon, which is then triangulated, contains no holes. Method 2 directly clips a polygon against a terrain triangle and creates bridge edges to transform the resulting polygons with holes to degenerate polygons that are further triangulated. The experimental results demonstrate that both proposed methods can efficiently process polygons with holes resulting in appropriate numbers of triangles. The processed interior-filled polygons remain close to the terrain surface in a virtual globe. Both proposed methods support real-time rendering of polygonal vector data in a virtual globe. [Termes IGN] web mappingRésumé : (Auteur) Web mapping and virtual globes are increasingly used to communicate 3D geospatial results to fellow researchers and the public. The lack of analytical functionality nonetheless restricts their utility in research, including archaeology. Integrating both 3D and analytical functionalities should result in a 4D archaeological GIS that can be used throughout the archaeological workflow. This paper investigates the feasibility of extending a virtual globe to such a user-friendly system. This involves a technical assessment by comparing the characteristics of virtual globes with user, data, functional, and organizational requirements. The prototypical implementation consequently uses Cesium® as basis. This prototype served for the practical feasibility evaluation. The usability test with two Flemish archaeological organizations has shown broad support for a low-threshold 4D ArcheoGIS from its potential end-users. Although public activities, analyses, and fieldwork preparations were mentioned as application domains, extending the system to fit archaeological workflows or a cyberinfrastructure is necessary. [Vedettes matières IGN] GéovisualisationRésumé : (auteur) The need for the real-time interactive co-visualization of 3D urban environments on a Web-based virtual Globe arises naturally in GIS but it still remains challenging due to the complexity of city models and their huge data sizes which largely overload the computational power and memory capacity of client devices. Especially on the Web, the visualization of city models makes their rendering not real-time because of the lack of content adaptation and progressive data transmission. This paper presents technical solutions for the co-visualization of massive city models in a Web-based virtual globe, allowing navigation over 3D cities on the globe in real-time. The volume of 3D city data, such as building data, does not allow us to render them directly, nor to keep them in the main memory. We propose to use not only a hierarchical presentation of geo-spatial data to create a chunk-based multiple resolution data structure which reduces complexity of the geometry being rendered; but also a view dependent algorithm so that only small subsets of 3D city models are streamed progressively in real-time and kept in client memory to contribute efficiently to the rendered image. Experimental results show that we can navigate over 3D cities on the Globe in real-time. [Vedettes matières IGN] GéovisualisationRésumé : (auteur) Street-view web applications have now gained widespread popularity. Targeting the general public, they offer ease of use, but while they allow efficient navigation from a pedestrian level, the immersive quality of such renderings is still low. The user is usually stuck at specific positions and transitions bring out artefacts, in particular parallax and aliasing. We propose a method to enhance the realism of street view navigation systems using a hybrid rendering based on realtime projective texturing on meshes and pointclouds with occlusion handling, requiring extremely minimized pre-processing steps allowing fast data update, progressive streaming (mesh-based approximation, with point cloud details) and unaltered raw data precise visualization.
