[Termes IGN] simulationRésumé : (Auteur) This paper evaluates errors and uncertainties in representing landscapes that arise from different data rasterization methods, spatial resolutions, and downscaled land-use change (LUC) scenarios. A vector LU dataset for Luxembourg (minimum mapping unit: 0.15 ha; year 2000) was used as the baseline reference map. This map was rasterized at three spatial resolutions using three cell class assignment methods. The landscape composition and configuration of these maps were compared. Four alternative scenarios of future LUC were also generated for the three resolutions using existing LUC scenarios and a statistical downscaling method creating 37 maps of LUC for the year 2050. These maps were compared in terms of composition and spatial configuration using simple metrics of landscape fragmentation and an analysis of variance (ANOVA). Differences in landscape composition and configuration between the three cell class assignment methods and the three spatial resolutions were found to be at least as large as the differences between the LUC scenarios. This occurred in spite of the large LUC projected by the scenarios. This demonstrates the importance of the rasterization method and the level of aggregation as a contribution to uncertainty when developing future LUC scenarios and in analysing landscape structure in ecological studies. Widely used land cover raster data, such as the National Land Cover Database (NLCD), were however not collected with sufficient spatial resolution to allow adequate representation of small-scale features such as roadways. Using tools available in ArcGIS software, vector road files were obtained from the Accident Location Information System (ALIS) at the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) and converted to raster data to create spatially explicit representations of impervious area associated with roadways. Comparison of this new coverage with the NLCD results in an increase of approximately 3120 km2 of newly identified impervious coverage for New York State (NYS) not present in the NLCD, representing a 244 percent increase from the transportation class in the NLCD. Of the land cover that would be reclassified to roadway using this methodology, approximately 40 percent would be reclassified from forest land, 31 percent from agricultural land, and 28 percent from the residential land cover classifications. [Termes IGN] simulationRésumé : (Auteur) Applications like land-cover mapping frequently require the transformation of vector polygons to raster grids, such that each cell in the output raster is assigned a single class. Cell value assignment is a direct function of the geometric relationship between the vector polygons and the origin, orientation and spatial resolution of the raster structure, acting in conjunction with the value assignment rule employed by the algorithm. Results of an alternative approach to characterizing origin assignment variability are reported. A simulation approach is employed to perturb the origin of the grid lattice by amounts smaller than the grid spacing. The distribution of results across all output raster realizations indicates the rasterization variability for a particular input vector map at a particular cell size. Results for a representative vector land-cover dataset are presented, indicating that substantial variability is possible. The paper concludes with a discussion of theoretical and practical implications for the identification of appropriate cell resolutions, as well as for identifying particular input shapes and polygon configurations that may be especially sensitive to rasterization error.
