[Termes IGN] zone à risqueRésumé : (auteur) This study presents geomorphic analysis of Xiadian buried fault in eastern Beijing plain (China), based on the analysis of a Satellite Pour l’Observation de la Terre (SPOT-5) image, a high-resolution digital elevation model (DEM) derived from an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) system, SRTM DEM and field investigation. Interpretations of the SPOT-5 image show that the pits always distribute between fault scarp segments or shallow grooves. The geomorphic features near the fault show echelon arrangements caused by dextral strike-slip activities of the fault. Based on this, the characteristics of stress field in this area have been clearly inferred. At centimeter-level accuracy, UAV-derived DEM profiles can clearly show micro tectonic landforms such as fault scarps, shallow grooves, steep slopes, and pits. Combined with previous research and field measurements, the evolution rates in length and height of the fault scarps are analysed. Furthermore, the deflection analysis of the drainage system also shows the characteristics of the continuous strike slip activity of the Xiadian fault. The study can provide valuable insight into geomorphic analysis of buried and semi-buried active faults in plain areas with increasingly frequent human activities. [Termes IGN] précision géométrique (imagerie)Résumé : (auteur) Generation of precise digital elevation models (DEMs) from stereo satellite images by using rational polynomial coefficients (RPCs) usually needs several ground control points (GCPs). This is mainly due to RPCs biases. However, since GCPs collection is a time consuming and expensive process, global DEMs (GDEMs), as the most inexpensive geospatial information, can be used to improve stereo satellite imagery-based DEMs (IB-DEMs). In this study, a 2.5 D mutual information based DEM matching, between a GDEM and an IB-DEM, was introduced for bias correction of satellite stereo images. Three well-known 30-meter GDEMs, namely, SRTM, ASTER, and AW3D30, were used and compared to assess the efficiency of this approach. The performance of the proposed method was evaluated by processing the stereo images acquired by CARTOSAT-1 satellite from two regions with flat, hilly, and mountainous topography. Evaluation results revealed that the proposed method could significantly improve the geometric accuracy of IB-DEM using all GDEMs. Numéro de notice : A2020-481 Affiliation des auteurs : non IGN Thématique : IMAGERIE Nature : Article nature-HAL : ArtAvecCL-RevueIntern DOI : 10.1080/10106049.2019.1573854 Date de publication en ligne : 01/03/2019 En ligne : https://doi.org/10.1080/10106049.2019.1573854 Format de la ressource électronique : url article Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=95632

[Termes IGN] températureRésumé : (auteur) Glacial melt water is the key source for various socio-industrial and domestic activities in the Himalayas. Several recent studies suggest that glaciers are experiencing rapid melt. The glaciers health can be best assessed by mass balance. However, the mass balance investigations using in-situ methods for a large sample of glaciers are highly difficult in the Himalaya. Hence, remote sensing methods and modelling techniques are preferred. However, there is a lack of information on uncertainties associated with these methods in assessing the regional scale mass balance. Hence, these methods are applied to evaluate the regional scale mass budget of Baspa basin, Western Himalaya between 2000 and 2011. The total mass loss estimated using geodetic method amounts to −0.49 ± 0.1 gigatons, temperature index method to −0.43 ± 0.012 gigatons and AAR method to −0.36 ± 0.1 gigatons. Furthermore, this study highlights the limitations of these methods in mass loss evaluation in data scarce Himalayan regions. [Termes IGN] sismologieRésumé : (auteur) Optical imagery has been proven to be an effective tool for measuring earthquake deformation in continental regions since its first application in the 1999 Izmit earthquake. In this article, we compile and analyze all the earthquakes that have been investigated with optical image matching by 2019, based on which we comment on various issues regarding measuring earthquake deformation with optical imagery. New generations of very high-resolution (VHR) data are effective for earthquake studies, but orthorectification of the VHR images is the major source of error, which is often ignored. We found that the displacements derived from the WorldView images strongly correlate with the errors in the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) digital elevation model (DEM) that was used in orthorectification. Based on the observed correlation between displacements and topography, we propose a new DEM-based method using the Advanced Land Observing Satellite (ALOS) World 3-D DEM to reduce the orthorectification errors. Combining the published optical data of earthquake deformation, we re-analyze the coseismic slip distribution and shallow slip deficit (SSD). The SSD model states that the coseismic slip in many strike-slip earthquakes decreases in magnitude toward the surface, but this model remains arguable because the interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR)-derived slip is usually not well-constrained at shallow depths due to decorrelation. Because optical matching directly measures the surface slip, we re-examine the slip distribution of 11 strike-slip earthquakes and find that the SSD model may primarily be artifacts in the InSAR measurements. It is therefore of great importance to include the optical data in earthquake studies to constrain coseismic slip inversions. [Termes IGN] séparateur à vaste margeRésumé : (auteur) Open global digital elevation models (GDEMs) represent a free and important source of information that is available to any country. Fusion processing between global and national digital elevation models is neither easy nor inexpensive. Hence, an alternative solution to fuse a GDEM (GTOPO30 or SRTM 1) with national GPS/levelling measurements is adopted. Herein, a transformation process between the GDEMs and national GPS/levelling measurements is applied using parametric and non-parametric equations. Two solutions are implemented before and after the filtration of raw data from outliers to assess the ability of the generated corrector surface model to absorb the effect of the outliers’ existence. In addition, a reliability analysis is conducted to select the most suitable transformation technique. We found that when both the fitting and prediction properties have equal priority, least-squares collocation integrated with a least-squares support vector machine inherited with a linear or polynomial kernel function exhibits the most accurate behavior. For the GTOPO30 model, before filtration of the raw data, there is an improvement in the mean and root mean square of errors by 39.31 % and 68.67 %, respectively. For the SRTM 1 model, the improvement in mean and root mean square values reached 86.88 % and 75.55 %, respectively. Subsequently, after the filtration process, these values became 3.48 % and 36.53 % for GTOPO30 and 85.18 % and 47.90 % for SRTM 1. Furthermore, it is found that using a suitable mathematical transformation technique can help increase the precision of classic GDEMs, such as GTOPO30, making them to be equal or more accurate than newer models, such as SRTM 1, which are supported by more advanced technologies. This can help overcome the limitation of shortage of technology or restricted data, particularly in developed countries. Henceforth, the proposed direct transformation technique represents an alternative faster and more economical way to utilize unfiltered measurements of GDEMs to estimate national digital elevations in areas with limited data.
