[Termes IGN] solRésumé : (Auteur) This paper evaluates performance of fully polarimetric SAR (PolSAR) data in several land cover mapping studies in the boreal forest environment, taking advantage of the high canopy penetration capability at L-band. The studies included multiclass land cover mapping, forest-nonforest delineation, and classification of soil type under vegetation. PolSAR data used in the study were collected by the ALOS PALSAR sensor in 2006-2007 over a managed boreal forest site in Finland. A supervised classification approach using selected polarimetric features in the framework of probabilistic neural network (PNN) was adopted in the study. It has no assumptions about statistics of the polarimetric features, using nonparametric estimation of probability distribution functions instead. The PNN-based method improved classification accuracy compared with standard maximum-likelihood approach. The improvement was considerably strong for soil type mapping under vegetation, indicating notable non-Gaussian effects in the PolSAR data even at L-band. The classification performance was strongly dependent on seasonal conditions. The PolSAR feature data set was further modified to include a number of recently proposed polarimetric parameters (surface scattering fraction and scattering diversity), reducing the computational complexity at practically no loss in the classification accuracy. The best obtained accuracies of up to 82.6% in five-class land cover mapping and more than 90% in forest-nonforest mapping in wall-to-wall validation indicate suitability of PolSAR data for wide-area land cover and forest mapping. [Termes IGN] polarimétrie radarRésumé : (Auteur) Analyzing the precision of vegetation height estimation with compact (i.e., single transmit instead of dual transmit) polarimetric interferometric synthetic aperture radar (PolInSAR) with the homogeneous random volume over ground model can help justify the use of this type of radar rather than using the full PolInSAR. However, since compact PolInSAR provides less information than full PolInSAR, a loss of precision in the vegetation height estimation is expected, which can depend on the single transmit polarization. The adaptation of the Cramer-Rao bound (CRB) derived for full PolInSAR in our earlier work to compact PolInSAR measurement provides a general methodology to characterize this loss of precision. Indeed, the CRB is a lower bound of the variance of unbiased estimators that does not depend on the choice of a particular estimation method. We illustrate this methodology for P-band measurements with three synthetic examples chosen for their variability of polarimetric responses. For these examples, it is shown that there can exist a large set of transmit polarizations for which the loss of precision described by the CRB is small (smaller than a factor 2) although there also exist transmit polarizations for which the loss can be large (about a factor 100). This loss of precision is compared with the large dependency of the precision to the vegetation height estimation that can be observed with the vegetation height (more than a factor 100 in the precision described by the CRB) when all the other parameters of the vegetation, ground, and radar system are constant. [Termes IGN] zone arideRésumé : (auteur) The quantitative study of the arid Lop Nur lake basin is significant to investigate the environmental changes in the arid area of northwestern China and extremely arid areas of Eurasia in general. Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery, with its penetration capability and advantages for studying geological phenomena on a large spatial scale, is very suitable for analyzing the subsurface of the Lop Nur area. Based on the full polarimetric ALOS PALSAR data and field investigation, it was found that the two-layer scattering mechanism of the dry sediments is very special and complex. The scattering mechanism in the bright strips is more complex than that in the gray strips according to the co-polarization correlation analysis. The experimental results show that the Cloude–Pottier decomposition method is more appropriate for this area. Moreover, the polarimetric characteristics and Cloude-Pottier decomposition results are very important for the study of the past climatic change in Lop Nur area. In conclusion, full polarimetric SAR data and target decomposition theory provide a new technique for obtaining information and quantitatively studying the subsurface characteristics of arid areas. [Termes IGN] traitement d'image radarRésumé : (éditeur) The aim of this book is to demonstrate the use of SAR data in three application domains, i.e. land cover (Part II), topography (Part III), and land motion (Part IV). These are preceded by Part I, where an extensive and complete review on speckle and adaptive filtering is provided, essential for the understanding of SAR images. Part II is dedicated to land cover mapping. Part III is devoted to the generation of Digital Elevation Models based on radargrammetry and on a wise fusion (by considering sensor characteristic and acquisition geometry) of interferometric and photogrammetric elevation data. Part IV provides a contribution to three applications related to land motion. Note de contenu : 1- Adaptive speckle filtering in radar imagery

[Termes IGN] polarimétrie radarRésumé : (Auteur) Orthorectification using digital terrain models is a key issue for full-polarimetric complex SAR data because resampling the complex data can corrupt the polarimetric phase, mainly in terrain with relief. This research thus compared two methods for the orthorectification of the complex SAR data: The polarimetric processing is performed before (image-space method) or after (ground-space method) the geometric processing. Radarsat-2 fine-quad data acquired with different look angles over a hilly relief study site were orthorectified using accurate light detection and ranging digital surface model. Quantitative evaluations between the two methods as a function of different geometric and radiometric parameters were thus performed to evaluate the impact during orthorectification. The results demonstrated that the look angles and the terrain slopes can potentially corrupt the polarimetric complex SAR data during its orthorectification with the ground-space method. In addition, general advice is provided to reduce these impacts to an acceptable level for the users and their polarimetric applications.
