[Termes IGN] teneur en eau de la végétationRésumé : (auteur) Active microwave-based retrieval of soil moisture in vegetated areas has uncertainties due to the sensitivity of the signal to both soil (dielectric constant and roughness) and vegetation (dielectric constant and structure) properties. A multi-frequency acquisition system would increase the number of observations that may constrain soil and/or vegetation parameter retrievals. In order to realize this constraint, an understanding of microwaves interaction with the surface and vegetation across frequencies is necessary. Different microwave frequencies have varied interactions with the soil-vegetation medium and increasing penetration into the soil and canopy with the decreasing frequency. In this study, we examine the contributions of different scattering mechanisms to coincident observations from two microwave frequencies (L and P) of airborne synthetic aperture radar instruments. We quantify contributions of surface, vegetation volume, and double-bounce scattering components. Results are analyzed and discussed to guide future multi-frequency retrieval algorithm designs. [Termes IGN] séismeRésumé : (auteur) We used both seismic and InSAR data to investigate the mechanism behind the 2011 Hawthorne (Nevada) earthquake swarm that occurred between March 15 and August 17, 2011. Regional seismic data were used to estimate the centroid depth and focal mechanism for nine earthquakes that occurred in this swarm, with magnitudes between Mw3.9 and Mw4.8. The inferred focal mechanisms indicate that the source of these earthquakes is normal faulting with a small left-lateral strike-slip component along the southwest direction. Three InSAR displacement maps covering the epicentral zone of the 2011 Hawthorne earthquakes were inverted to get a slip model. The slip distribution shows that the deformation source is characterized by normal faulting, consistent with our inferred focal mechanisms. Our results suggest that the seismogenic zone was in the tensile stress environment. The temporal and spatial evolutions of seismicity suggest that the 2011 Hawthorne swarm might be caused by aseismic slip. Therefore, the 2011 Hawthorne earthquake swarm may have been the result of aseismic slip under the regional tectonic stress, and had nothing to do with volcanic activity. However, the quantitative evidence for aseismic slip is limited to the indication that the geodetic moment is 15% greater than the seismic moment, which is near the level of uncertainty. [Termes IGN] surveillance hydrologiqueRésumé : (auteur) Differential Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (DInSAR) methodology has been successfully employed to detect water level changes and produce corresponding water level variation maps. In this study, Agia and Kournas lakes, located in Western Crete, Greece, were used as pilot areas to monitor water level change with means of SAR interferometry and auxiliary Earth Observation (EO) data. The water level variation was monitored for the period 2015–2016, using Sentinel-1A imageries and corresponding stage water level data. Landsat 8 data were additionally used to study vegetation regime and surface water extent and how these parameters affect interferograms performance. The results highlighted the fact that the combination of SAR backscattering intensity and unwrapped phase can provide additional insight into hydrological studies. The overall analysis of both interferometric characteristics and backscattering mechanism denoted their potential in enhancing the reliability of the water-level retrieval scheme and optimizing the capture of hydrological patterns spatial distribution. [Termes IGN] vitesseRésumé : (Auteur) This paper evaluates the capability of Sentinel-1 VH-polarized synthetic aperture radar signals, involving 738 scenes in the interferometric wide swath (IW) mode, for ocean surface wind speed retrieval using a novel subswath-based C-band cross-polarized ocean model. When compared with in situ measurements, it is observed that wind speed retrieval accuracy varies progressively along swath, with the most accurate wind speed retrievals being derived from subswath 3 [root-mean-square error (RMSE) of 1.82 m · s -1 ], followed by subswath 2 (RMSE of 1.92 m · s -1 ), while subswath 1 showed the lowest retrieval accuracy (RMSE of 2.37 m · s -1 ). However, knowledge of the spatio-temporal dynamics associated with winter land-use remains a challenge for the scientific community. In this context, the objective of this study is to evaluate the potential of time series of high spatial resolution optical and SAR images for the study of winter land-use at a local and regional scale. For that purpose, a methodology has been established to: (i) determine the most suitable classification method for identifying winter land-use ; (ii) compare Sentinel-1 SAR and Sentinel-2 optical images; (iii) define the most suitable SAR configuration by comparing three image time-series (Alos-2, Radarsat-2 and Sentinel-1).The results first of all highlighted the interest of the Random Forest classification algorithm to discriminate at a fine scale the different types of land use in winter. Secondly, they showed the value of Sentinel-2 data for mapping winter land-use at a local and regional scale. Finally, they determined that a dense time series of Sentinel-1 images was the most appropriate SAR configuration to identify winter land-use. In general, while this thesis has shown that Sentinel-2 data are best suited to studying land use in winter, SAR images are of great interest in regions with significant cloud cover, dense Sentinel-1 time-series having being defined as the most efficient.
