[Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (auteur) Studies on urban–rural fringes, which represent regions facing various urbanization problems caused by rapid expansion, have steadily increased in recent years. However, problems persist in the quantitative delimitation of such regions. Based on the characteristics of abrupt urbanization-level changes in urban–rural fringe areas, we propose a constraint-based method in this study to detect the urban–rural fringes of cities with a spatial polycentric structure of ‘Main center–Subcenter’ based on data from multiple sources. We used the proposed approach to delimitate the fringe areas of Jiangyin and Zhangjiagang and identify their urban main center and subcenter pre-defined by their city master plans, towns, and rural hinterlands. Comparison of the identified results of different single urbanization indices, a single detection center, kernel density estimation, and a single constraint revealed that the patch density and Shannon’s diversity index of the proposed method were higher in urban–rural fringes and smaller in city centers and rural hinterlands. This suggests that the landscape of urban–rural fringes delimitated by the proposed method is more fragmented, diverse, and complicated, thereby performing better. This study is significant for future urban spatial analysis, planning, and management. [Termes IGN] sécuritéRésumé : (éditeur) This open access collection of AI ethics case studies is the first book to present real-life case studies combined with commentaries and strategies for overcoming ethical challenges. Case studies are one of the best ways to learn about ethical dilemmas and to achieve insights into various complexities and stakeholder perspectives. Given the omnipresence of AI ethics in academic, policy and media debates, the book will be suitable for a wide range of audiences, from scholars of different disciplines (e.g. AI science, ethics, politics, philosophy, economics) to policy-makers, lobbying NGOs, teachers and the educated public. [Vedettes matières IGN] CartologieRésumé : (auteur) Individuals with different characteristics exhibit different eye movement patterns in map reading and wayfinding tasks. In this study, we aim to explore whether and to what extent map users’ eye movements can be used to detect who created them. Specifically, we focus on the use of gaze data for inferring users’ identities when users are performing map-based spatial tasks. We collected 32 participants’ eye movement data as they utilized maps to complete a series of self-localization and spatial orientation tasks. We extracted five sets of eye movement features and trained a random forest classifier. We used a leave-one-task-out approach to cross-validate the classifier and achieved the best identification rate of 89%, with a 2.7% equal error rate. This result is among the best performances reported in eye movement user identification studies. We evaluated the feature importance and found that basic statistical features (e.g. pupil size, saccade latency and fixation dispersion) yielded better performance than other feature sets (e.g. spatial fixation densities, saccade directions and saccade encodings). The results open the potential to develop personalized and adaptive gaze-based map interactions but also raise concerns about user privacy protection in data sharing and gaze-based geoapplications. [Termes IGN] transformationRésumé : (auteur) The interaction of three variables—territory, cartography, and terrain—can account for landscape transformation processes at Naharayim/el Baqura, in the Jordan Valley, over the last century and a half. This interface is examined across three historical periods marking the passage from nomadism to sedentism: The Ottoman Period (1858–1917), the British Mandate (1918–1948), and the statehood period (1948–1994). Adopting a hybridized and interdisciplinary approach at the juncture of history, landscape architecture, and geopolitics, this work performs an in-depth analysis of the three variables in each period and examines their relationship to power. The analysis emphasizes territorial concepts and border-making, mapping practices, land survey techniques, infrastructure, agricultural development, and water regimes. It will be shown that mapping has been a medium of politics, with landscapes often being subjugated to political or territorial ambitions. Data is gathered from primary sources, including some previously unknown from the periods in question, fieldwork, interviews, a point cloud data set from both banks of the Jordan River, as well as contemporary social scientific scholarship. It is argued that landscape is neither a natural feature nor a man-made system of engineered spaces, but rather the outcome of a dynamic interaction between natural landscape, human imagination, and various iterations of power, be they natural, theological, technological, political, or military. It is this dynamic interaction across space and time that this work attempts to map. Note de contenu : 1. Domesticated Landscape: Ottoman Imperial Period (1858–1917)
