[Termes IGN] structure-from-motionRésumé : (Auteur) Over the last years, the area of conservation and enhancement of cultural heritage has benefited from new surveying methodologies. In particular, laser scanners and the latest evolutions in digital photogrammetry and processing software based on structure from motion and multi-view stereo algorithms allowed to achieve 3D models of the status quo whose features include precision suitable for restoration scales and high-quality textures. Besides methodological and technical issues, another key requirement for any intervention on this kind of buildings is their full, in-depth knowledge, which includes building design, modifications’ timeline, current conditions, present-day and historical causes of degradation etc. In this view, surveys are a valuable asset for the investigation of historical sources. The present work investigates historical photographic sources, focusing on the possibility of orientation by means of photogrammetry techniques, which provides an additional texture layer as a support tool for historical analysis. The paper displays a case study featuring the availability of a reference survey, which allows validation of the results, and two other cases highlighting the importance of this kind of documents to restoring teams. [Termes IGN] semis de pointsRésumé : (Auteur) The paper provides some operative replies to evaluate the effectiveness and the critical issues of the simultaneous localisation and mapping (SLAM)-based mobile mapping system (MMS) called ZEB by GeoSLAM™ https://geoslam.com/technology/. In these last years, this type of handheld 3D mapping technology has increasingly developed the framework of portable solutions for close-range mapping systems that have mainly been devoted to mapping the indoor building spaces of enclosed or underground environments, such as forestry applications and tunnels or mines. The research introduces a set of test datasets related to the documentation of landscape contexts or the 3D modelling of architectural complexes. These datasets are used to validate the accuracy and informative content richness about ZEB point clouds in stand-alone solutions and in cases of combined applications of this technology with multisensor survey approaches. In detail, the proposed validation method follows the fulfilment of the endorsed approach by use of root mean square error (RMSE) evaluation and deviation analysis assessment of point clouds between SLAM-based data and 3D point cloud surfaces computed by more precise measurement methods to evaluate the accuracy of the proposed approach. Furthermore, this study specifies the suitable scale for possible handlings about these peculiar point clouds and uses the profile extraction method in addition to feature analyses such as corner and plane deviation analysis of architectural elements. Finally, because of the experiences reported in the literature and performed in this work, a possible reversal is suggested. If in the 2000s, most studies focused on intelligently reducing the light detection and ranging (LiDAR) point clouds where they presented redundant and not useful information, contrariwise, in this sense, the use of MMS methods is proposed to be firstly considered and then to increase the information only wherever needed with more accurate high-scale methods. [Termes IGN] protection de la vie privéeRésumé : (Auteur) Location privacy, or geoprivacy, is critical to secure users’ privacy in context‐aware applications. Location‐based services pose privacy risks for users, due to the inferences that could be made about them from their location information and the potential misuse of this data by service providers or third‐party companies. A common solution is to apply masking or location obfuscation, which degrades location information quality while keeping a geographic coordinate structure. However, there is a trade‐off between privacy, quality of service, and quality of information, the last one being a valuable asset for companies. NRand is a location privacy mechanism with obfuscation capabilities and resistance against filtering attacks. In order to minimize the impact on location information quality, NRand‐K has been introduced. This algorithm is designed for use when releasing location information to third parties or as open data with privacy concerns. To assess the impact of location obfuscation on exploratory spatial data analysis (ESDA), a comparison is performed between obfuscated data with NRand, NRand‐K, and unaltered data. For the experiments, geolocated tweets collected during the Central Italy 2016 earthquake are used. Results show that NRand‐K reduces the impact on ESDA, where inferences were similar to those obtained with the unaltered data. [Termes IGN] templeRésumé : (Auteur) Ancient Chinese architecture 3D digitalization and documentation is a challenging task for the image based modeling community due to its architectural complexity and structural delicacy. Currently, an effective approach to ancient Chinese architecture 3D reconstruction is to merge the two point clouds, separately obtained from ground and aerial images by the SfM technique. There are two understanding issues should be specially addressed: (1) it is difficult to find the point matches between the images from different sources due to their remarkable variations in viewpoint and scale; (2) due to the inevitable drift phenomenon in any SfM reconstruction process, the resulting two point clouds are no longer strictly related by a single similarity transformation as it should be theoretically. To address these two issues, a new point cloud merging method is proposed in this work. Our method has the following characteristics: (1) the images are matched by leveraging sparse mesh based image synthesis; (2) the putative point matches are filtered by geometrical consistency check and geometrical model verification; and (3) the two point clouds are merged via bundle adjustment by linking the ground-to-aerial tracks. Extensive experiments show that our method outperforms many of the state-of-the-art approaches in terms of ground-to-aerial image matching and point cloud merging. [Termes IGN] web mappingRésumé : (Auteur) Despite being of paramount importance to humanity, tangible cultural heritage is often at risk from natural and anthropogenic threats worldwide. As a result, heritage discovery and conservation remain a huge challenge for both developed and developing countries, with heritage sites often inadequately cared for, be it due to a lack of resources, nonrecognition of the value by local people or authorities, human conflict, or some other reason. This paper presents an online geo-crowdsourcing system, termed Share Our Cultural Heritage (SOCH), which can be utilized for large-scale heritage documentation and sharing. Supported by web and mobile GIS, cultural heritage data such as textual stories, locations, and images can be acquired via portable devices. These data are georeferenced and presented to the public via web-mapping. Using photogrammetric modelling, acquired images are used to reconstruct heritage structures or artefacts into 3D digital models, which are then visualized on the SOCH web interface to enable public interaction. This end-to-end system incubates an online virtual community to encourage public engagement, raise awareness, and stimulate cultural heritage ownership. It also provides valuable resources for cultural heritage exploitation, management, education, and monitoring over time.
