Or in complexité dynamique et morphologique de nombreux phénomènes les rendent réfractaires aux représentations géométriques usuelles. Benoit B. Mandelbrot, préfacier de l'ouvrage, a montré il y a une vingtaine d'années que la modélisation de ces phénomènes requiert des structures de dimension non entière — considérées naguère comme des anomalies mathématiques sans intérêt. Désormais connues sous le nom de fractales, ces structures se caractérisent par lever invariance d'échelle : une figure donnée se compose de figures qui lui sont quasi identiques, elles-mêmes composées de figures quasi identiques, et ceci indéfiniment. Les fractales ont depuis la fin des années 70 suscite des travaux dans de multiples domaines où elles se sont révélées pertinentes : physique des matériaux, mécanique des fluides, anatomique fonctionnelle, morphologique végétale, géomorphologie, astrophysique... Cet ouvrage met précisément en évidence les structures fractales présentes au sein des phénomènes étudiés dans ces disciplines : reliefs, turbulence, chaos, fractures, percolation, fronts de diffusion, agrégation, transitions de phases, trajectoires de particule... En outre,l'auteur décrit en détail plusieurs modelés de croissance, ainsi que les aspects dynamiques du transport dans les milieux fractals. Destinée aux étudiants en physique et chimie des deuxième et troisième cycles, cette étude s'adresse également aux chercheurs et ingénieurs intéressés par une tendance essentielle de la physique contemporaine : la géométrisation du réel.
