By means of a density hypothesis for the topographic masses the potential is "continued downwards" into the Earth's interior. This thesis constructs the geoïd from the solution of an exterior as well as an interior boundary value problem, i. e. it does not employ reductions. It is well known that the gravitational part of the potential fulfills the Laplacian differential equation in mass free points. On the other hand, in the interior the potential obeys the Poisson differential equation, whereby the inhomogeneity is only known approximately (mainly from seismic observations). Thus we are led to the inverse problem of geophysics. We ensure that the mass density function is compatible with the boundary function as prescribed by the Newtonian gravitational law. This is achieved by adding a correction function to the model density and the model potential, respectively. A correction potential function is chosen which fulfills the bipotential equation. Gravity values at the Earth's surface are taken to be boundary values; the geometry of the surface is considered as known. In the first chapter the boundary value problem (especially that of the interior domain) are mathematically formulated. In the second chapter we consider the boundary value problem in the exterior space; we quote uniqueness and existence theorems and discuss several solution methods. We present in detail the method of series expansions with spherical harmonies, which is well suited for global calculations; we derive a linear equation System, which bas to be solved for the unknown series coefficients. Accordingly the third chapter deals with the interior boundary value problem. In the fourth chapter a reference potential for both domains is constructed. In the last chapter numerical simulation amputations are presented, whereby a good agreement with the reduction methods is found. The combination of point and mean gravity data as well as topographic informations with a global geopotential model is performed by means of integral formulas evaluated by Fast Fourier Transforms (FFT). The effect of the topography and a spherical harmonic model are taken into account in a so-called remove-restore technique. The result is represented by 80208 height anomalies stored in a file for a grid with mesh size 60"x100", from which height anomalies and deflections of the vertical can be interpolated to stations with given geodetic latitude and longitude using the Fortran subroutine GEOFRG. The subroutine GEOFRG and the corresponding grid file is obtainable from Institut für Erdmessung, Universität Hannover, on 9-track magnetic tape or on MS-DOS diskette. [Termes IGN] potentiel de pesanteur terrestreIndex. décimale : MX Mémoires divers Résumé : (Auteur) Modeling techniques and physical implications of the geopotential are examined in terms of the methods for determining the geopotential and the application of the methods to geophysical problems. Emphasis was given to the modem space methods especially SST (satellite-to-satellite tracking) and satellite gradiometry, which will become the major geopotential modeling techniques in the future. Satellite altimetry observations are used to obtain geoid anomalies for studies of lithospheric structures in selected continental margin and trench areas. The anomalous potential over a trench is interpreted in terms of a lithosphere subduction model. The positive anomalies at the landward flank of the Ryukyu Trench are partly explained by the density variations due to the subduction related thermal structure. The anomalous potential over passive continental margins is interpreted as the consequence of the deflected Moho in response to topographic surface loads. The influence of crustal structure on the anomalous potential over Fennoscandia was investigated. High correlation between the geoid anomaly and crustal thickness at intermediate wavelengths is found, supporting the argument that the crust-mantle boundary contributes significantly to the anomalous potential. Experimental results of geoid determination in the northern part of Fennoscandia using a satellite positioning technique are presented. Gravity gradients at a height of 160 km over Fennoscandia are simulated in order to examine the sensitivity requirement and recoverability of SST or satellite gradiometry. Attention is drawn to the problems in relation to the geopotential modeling and interpretation, including the notion of wavelength in spherical harmonic analysis/synthesis, and the relation between the total disturbed potential and the contributions from individual sources in the wavelength domain. [Termes IGN] modèle de géopotentielIndex. décimale : 30.41 Géoïde Résumé : (Auteur) Combining a set of spherical harmonic coefficients and terrestrial gravity anoma-lies for the determination of geoid undulations, resp. height anomalies, different sources of error affect the accuracy of the results. The effects of four types of error on absolute and relative undulations are estimated in detail, the analysis being based on a modification of Stokes1 integral formula. If a recent geopoten-tial model (e.g. GEM 10, GRIM 2) and mean gravity anomalies over surface elements of 2 ... 10 km side length are used, absolute undulations possess a global r.m.s. of ± 1 ... 3 dm ; relative undulations between points 10 km (50 km) apart can be derived with an accuracy of a few mm (cm). Differences of geoid undulations re-ferring to 10 - 100 km distant points are necessary in practical geodesy in con-nection with the evaluation of precise distance measurements as well as for geo-dynamic applications. By using the modified Stokes functions instead of the ori-ginal Stokes' formula the integration area may be strongly diminished.
