[Vedettes matières IGN] Ecologie forestièreRésumé : (auteur) The knowledge of pollen sensitivity and tolerance to stress factors such as air pollution is important for forest sustainability, ensuring the most efficient production with the highest benefits and lowest resource losses. This study intended to evaluate the influence of common air pollutants in four forest trees species, Betula pendula Roth, Corylus avellana L., Acer negundo L. and Quercus robur L., through a comparative analysis at the same experimental conditions. We aimed to investigate the effect that may occur in pollen fertility, protein content, oxidative stress and wall composition after exposure in vitro to ozone and nitrogen dioxide at concentration levels for vegetation protection in Europe. Our results suggest changes in pollen viability, protein content and differential sensitivity related to ROS synthesis, NADPH oxidase activity, as well as in wall composition. The results indicate that NO2 exposure affected more the pollen species studied mostly at the highest concentration exposure. As for ozone, there were less significant differences between samples; however, a different behavior occurs in O3 expositions, where the most influence happens at the legal limit for vegetation protection in Europe. Our study showed that significant pollen functions could be compromised even at common air pollutant’s concentrations. [Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) In order to understand the impact of summer drought on dry deposition of tropospheric ozone (O3), we compared severe and mild drought periods of summer 2018 in a mountain Norway spruce forest at Bílý Kříž, Beskydy Mts. An eddy covariance technique was applied to measure diurnal courses of the ecosystem O3 and CO2 fluxes. Low O3 deposition was recorded in the morning and evening, while the highest CO2 and O3 fluxes were recorded during the central hours of the day. Total O3 deposition during severe drought (soil humidity 13%) was significantly higher than the deposition during the mild drought period (soil humidity 19%). Our data indicate that high vapour pressure deficit and low soil humidity during severe drought led to the stomatal closure, while non-stomatal O3 deposition, associated with chemical reactions of O3 with NO and volatile organic compounds, are responsible for higher total O3 deposition during the severe drought period. Therefore, we assume that under severe drought stomatal O3 uptake decreases but non-stomatal depositions to forest ecosystems substantially increase. While introducing ornamental plants can enhance the biodiversity of green spaces it risks environmental impacts such as increasing emissions of biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) that are harmful to air quality and human health. The present study, taking Qingdao City as a case study, evaluated the plant diversity and BVOC emissions of urban green spaces and tried to find out a solution to increase biodiversity while reducing BVOC emissions. Results showed that: (1) the species diversity and phylogenetic diversity of trees in urban green spaces were 22% and 16% lower than rural forest of this region; (2) urban areas had higher BVOC emission intensity (2.6 g C m−2 yr−1) than their rural surroundings (2.1 g C m−2 yr−1); (3) introducing the selected 11 tree species will increase 15% and 11% of species diversity and phylogenetic diversity, respectively; and (4) the BVOC emissions from green spaces will more than triple by 2050, but a moderate introduction of the selected low-emitting trees species could reduce 34% of these emissions. The scheme of introducing low-emitting ornamental species leads to a win–win situation and also has implications for the sustainable green space management of other cities. [Termes IGN] Ozone Monitoring InstrumentRésumé : (Auteur) A new approach for the retrieval of the vertical column concentrations of trace gases, from hyperspectral satellite reflectances, is presented. The investigation moves from the general rationale of independent component analysis, but the constraint of perfect independence among sources is replaced by a minimum dependence concept that proves more reasonable for the application at hand. The unmixing of the gas spectra and their concentrations is achieved from linear mixtures obtained from the logarithm of the spectral reflectance. After a proper preprocessing stage aimed at reducing major residual dependences caused by atmospheric scattering, trace-gas retrieval is carried out through a minimization of a statistical cost function, subject to the physical constraint that the resulting spectra must be nonnegative. The experimental analysis relies on the retrieval of sulfur dioxide during volcanic emissions using data from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Ozone Monitoring Instrument. To validate the procedure, reference reflectance spectra having a known profile of sulfur dioxide are generated with the MODerate resolution atmospheric TRANsmission software, and the retrieved concentration is compared with the theoretical one. Performance in the presence of shot and detector noise has also been analyzed starting from pure simulated spectral reflectances.
