[Termes IGN] zone à risqueRésumé : (Auteur) The aim of this study is to evaluate the hazard of landslides at Boun, Korea, using a Geographic Information System (GIS) and remote sensing. Landslide locations were identified in the Boun area from interpretation of aerial photographs and field surveys. The topographic, soil, forest, geologic, lineament and land cover data were collected, processed and constructed into a spatial database using GIS and remote sensing data. The factors that influence landslide occurrence, such as slope, aspect and curvature of the topography, were calculated from the topographic database. Texture, material, drainage and effective soil thickness were extracted from the soil database, and type, age, diameter and density of timber were extracted from the forest database. The lithology was extracted from the geological database and lineaments were detected from Indian Remote Sensing (IRS) satellite images. The land cover was classified based on the Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) satellite image. Landslide hazard areas were analysed and mapped, using the landslide-occurrence factors, by the probability-likelihood ratio method. The results of the analysis were verified using actual landslide location data. The validation results showed satisfactory agreement between the hazard map and the existing data on landslide locations. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) A methodology for landslide susceptibility mapping using an integrated remote sensing and GIS approach is presented. A part of the Darjeeling Himalaya was selected for the model execution. IRS satellite data, topographic maps, field data, and other informative maps were used as inputs to the study. Important terrain factors, contributing to landslide occurrences in the region, were identified and corresponding thematic data layers were generated. These data layers represent the geological, topographical, and hydrological conditions of the terrain. A numerical rating scheme for the factors was developed for spatial data analysis in a GIS. The resulting landslide susceptibility map delineates the area into different zones of four relative susceptibility classes: high, moderate, low, and very low. The susceptibility map was validated by correlating the landslide frequencies of different classes. This has shown a close agreement with the existing field instability condition. The effectiveness of the map was also confirmed by the high statistically significant value of a chi-square test. [Termes IGN] zone à risqueRésumé : (Auteur) Landslides are natural hazards that cause havoc to both property and life every year, especially in the Himalayas. Landslide hazard zonation (LHZ) of areas affected by landslides therefore is essential for future developmental planning and organization of various disaster mitigation programmes. The conventional Geographical Information System (GIS)-based approaches for LHZ suffer from the subjective weight rating system where weights are assigned to different causative factors responsible for triggering a landslide. Alternatively, artificial neural networks (ANNs) may be applied. These are considered to be independent of any strict assumptions or bias, and they determine the weights objectively in an iterative fashion. In this study, an ANN has been applied to generate an LHZ map of an area in the Bhagirathi Valley, Himalayas, using spatial data prepared from IRS-IB satellite sensor data and maps from other sources. The accuracy of the LHZ map produced by the ANN is around 80% with a very small training dataset. The distribution of landslide hazard zones derived from ANN shows similar trends as that observed with the existing landslides locations in the field. A comparison of the results with an earlier produced GIS-based LHZ map of the same area by the authors (using the ordinal weight rating method) indicates that ANN results are better than the earlier method. Note de contenu : 1 - La france

[Termes IGN] télédétection spatialeRésumé : (Auteur) The present study uses a satellite remote sensing approach for assesssing coastal sediment dynamics in the western side of the Zanzibar channel, Tanzania. Four Landsat images (1986, 1998, 1999 and 2000) were used for the study. investigation of the four images revealed that the Ruvu delta north of the river mouth has been growing rapidly, especially between 1986 and 1998, with an annual northward linear growth rate of about 133m year -1 and an annual areal growth rate of about 1 km2 every 3 years. The study identified a palaeo-shoreline feature that is parallel to the present shoreline and located about 1.9 km inland from the present shoreline. An important sediment contributor to river Ruvu is derived from the Uluguru Mountains, a tropical mountainous area located about 200 km from the coastline of the Tanzania mainland. The working hypothesis is that either the observed growth of the delta occured at a gradual rate between 1986 and 1998 or it was mainly an episodic event related to the extreme rainfall events such as the 1997/98 El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) event, which was associated with extreme rainfall and widespread landslides.
