[Termes IGN] résolution multipleRésumé : (Auteur) Many cases of remote sensing classification present complicated patterns that cannot he identified on the basis of spectral data alone, but require contextual methods that base class discrimination on the spatial relationships between the individual pixel and local and global configurations of neighboring pixels. However, the use of contextual classification is still limited by critical issues, such as complexity and problem dependency. We propose here a contextual classification strategy for object recognition in remote sensing images in an attempt to solve recognition tasks operatively. The salient characteristics of the strategy are the definition of a multiresolution feature extraction procedure exploiting human perception and the use of soft neural classification based on the multilayer perceptron model. Three experiments were conducted to evaluate the performance of the methodology, one in an easily controlled domain using synthetic images, the other two in real domains involving builtup pattern recognition in panchromatic aerial photographs and high-resolution satellite images. [Termes IGN] système spatialRésumé : (Auteur) The IKONOS satellite simultaneously collects 1-m panchromatic and 4-m multispectral images, providing the commercial and scientific community with a dramatic improvement in spatial resolution over previously available satellite imagery. The sun-synchronous IKONOS orbit provides global coverage, consistent access times, and near-nadir viewing angles. The system is capable of 1:10,000 scale mapping without ground control and 1:2400 scale mapping with ground control. The IKONOS ground station produces radiometrically corrected images, georectified images, orthorectified images, stereo pairs, and digital elevation models (DEMs) for image analysis photogrammetric and cartographic applications. This article provides an overview of the IKONOS satellite, ground systems, products, and applications. [Termes IGN] photo-interprétationRésumé : (Auteur) Five individual projects characterized the spatial performance of the IKONOS commercial imaging sensor. The result was determination of the spatial image quality of IKONOS data products in terms of the National Imagery Interpretability Rating Scale (NIIRS), the system Transfer Function (MTF), the system stability over its first year of operation, the characteristics of the Space Imaging MTF Compensation (MTFC) procedure, and the application specific capabilities of IKONOS imagery. Both panchromatic and multispectral imagery were evaluated. Major conclusions of this work are that the system was stable in imaging performance during the first year of operation, that its MTF meets the specification for the NASA Scientific Data Purchase program, that the initial MTFC processing appears to transposed in the intrack and the crosstrack directions, that the MTFC results in a noise amplification of 2 X to 4 X in addition to sharpening the imagery, and that IKONOS panchromatic imagery achieves an average NIIRS rating of 4.5. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) A detailed assessment of the plammetric accuracy of highresolution panchromatic Ikonos orthoirnage products for three different test sites is presented. The main objective was to evaluate the potential of Ikonos orthoirnage products for use as digital image basemaps in local government Geographic Information Systems (GIS) systems. For maximum utility and adoption, a planimetric accuracy of 3-5 m and a circular error at 90% probability (CE90) is considered nominal for local government planning and management applications. Lowprecision, lowcost georeferenced Ikonos image products (Geo, 50 m CE90) were orthorectified using third party commercially available software and various custom Digital Elevation Models (DEMs). The planimetric accuracies of the resulting custom Ikonos orthoirnages were found to vary between 2-4 m CE90. In addition, United States Geological Survey (USGS) DEMs were also used to orthorectify georeferenced Ikonos image products. Planimetric accuracies of 2-3 m CE90 were obtained from georeferenced Ikonos using USGS DEMs with RMS vertical accuracies of the order of 2 m. The approach demonstrated here can be used to deliver uptodate, costeffective ortholmages from Ikonos Geo products that yield planimetric accuracies suitable for use as digital image basemaps by local governments. [Termes IGN] urbanisationRésumé : (Auteur) The long-time historical evolution and recent rapid development of' BeiJing, China, present before us a unique urban structure. A 10-metre spatial resolution SPOT panchromatic image of Beijing has been studied to capture the spatial patterns of the city. Supervised image classifications were performed Using statistical and structural texture features produced from the image. Textural features, including eight texture features from the Grey-Level Cooccurrence Matrix (GI-CM) method ; a computationally efficient texture feature, the Number of Different Grey-levels (NDG), and a structural texture feature, Edge Density (ED), were evaluated. It was found that generally single texture features performed poorly. Classification accuracy increased with increasing number of texture features until three or four texture features were combined. The more texture features in the combination, the smaller difference between different combinations. The results also show that a lower number of texture features were needed for more homogeneous areas. NDG and ED combined with GLCM texture features produced similar results as the same number of GLCM texture features. Two classification schemes were adopted, stratified classification and non-stratified classification. The best stratified classification result was better than the best non-stratified classification result.
