[Termes IGN] zone tropicale humideRésumé : (Auteur) Land-cover classification with remotely sensed data in moist tropical regions is a challenge due to the complex biophysical conditions. This paper explores techniques to improve land-cover classification accuracy through a comparative analysis of different combinations of spectral signatures and textures from Landsat Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+) and Radarsat data. A wavelet-merging technique was used to integrate Landsat ETM+ multispectral and panchromatic data or Radarsat data. Grey-level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) textures based on Landsat ETM+ panchromatic or Radarsat data and different sizes of moving windows were examined. A maximum-likelihood classifier was used to implement image classification for different combinations. This research indicates the important role of textures in improving land-cover classification accuracies in Amazonian environments. The incorporation of data fusion and textures increases classification accuracy by approximately 5.8-6.9% compared to Landsat ETM+ data, but data fusion of Landsat ETM+ multispectral and panchromatic data or Radarsat data cannot effectively improve land-cover classification accuracies. In previous studies, the focus was on classifying large regions due to the resolution of available satellite images. Nowadays, very high-resolution satellite imagery (Ikonos and Quickbird) allows researchers to focus on more complex land-use problems such as monitoring development in urban regions. Solutions to these complex problems may improve the life standards of city residents. To this end, we focus on automatically monitoring construction zones using their very high-resolution panchromatic satellite images through time. To monitor land development, we obtain sequential images of a selected region. Then, we extract features from each image in the sequence. Comparing values of these features, we expect to measure the degree of land development through time. In a similar study, we introduced graph theoretical measures over Ikonos imagery to measure organization in a given satellite image. This paper is an extension of our previous work with more powerful new features. Here, we first introduce a novel method to extract straight line segments using a least squares ellipse fitting. Then, we introduce four new graph theoretical features. More importantly, we introduce a novel method to embed the spatial information in gray-level co-occurrence matrix statistical features to measure land development. Finally, we test all our existing and new features to measure land development in 19 different urban construction zones. Our test set consists of Ikonos satellite images of these regions captured in separate times. First, a multi-band wavelet fusion method, specifically the four-band wavelet method, is proposed for fusing one-meter panchromatic and four-meter multi-spectral Ikonos images. Second, the fusion experiments are undertaken by using the proposed four-band wavelet method. The results are compared with fused images from other methods, such as two-band wavelet and IHS methods. The results are evaluated based on both visual evaluation and a quantitative analysis, by using several assessing parameters and a new evaluation method: the profile intensity curve. Third, as an application of the fused images, they are applied for recognition and identification of features in urban area. The quantitative analysis demonstrates that four-band wavelet transformation method provides improved fused images.
