[Termes IGN] test de performanceRésumé : (Auteur) The launch of IKONOS by Space Imaging opens a new era of high resolution satellite imagery collection and mapping. The IKONOS satellite simultaneously acquires 1m panchromatic and 4m multi-spectral images in four bands that are suitable for high accuracy mapping applications. Space Imaging uses the rational function model (RFM), also known as rational polynomial camera model, instead of the physical IKONOS sensor model to communicate the imaging geometry. As revealed by recent studies from several researchers, the RFM retains the full capability of performing photogrammetric processing in absence of the physical sensor model. This paper presents some RFM-based processing methods and mapping applications developed for 3D feature extraction, orthorectification and RPC model refinement using IKONOS imagery. Comprehensive tests are performed to test the accuracy of 3D reconstruction and orthorectification and to validate the feasibility of the model refinement techniques. [Termes IGN] transformation intensité-teinte-saturationRésumé : (Auteur) Since Chavez proposed the highpass filtering procedure to fuse multispectral and panchromatic images, several fusion methods have been developed based on the same principle: to extract from the panchromatic image spatial detail information to later inject it into the multispectral one. In this paper, we present new fusion alternatives based on the same concept, using the mul-resolution wavelet decomposition to execute the detail extraction phase and the intensity-hue-saturation (IHS) and principal component analysis (PCA) procedures to inject the spatial detail of the panchromatic image into the multispectral one. The multiresoluson wavelet decomposition has been performed using both decimated and undecimated algorithms and the resulting merged images compared both spectral and spatially. These fusion methods, as well as standard IHS-, PCA-, and wavelet-based methods have been used to merge Systeme Pour l'Observation de la Terre (SPOT) A XI and SPOT 4 M images with a ratio 4: 1. We have estimated the validity of each fusion method by analyzing, visually and quantitatively, the quality of the resulting fused images. The methoddogical approaches proposed in this paper result in merged images with improved quality with respect to those obtained by standard IHS, PCA, and standard wavelet-based fusion methods. For both proposed fusion methods, better results are obtained when an undecimated algorithm is used to perform the multiresolution wavelet decomposition. Here, we propose a user-assisted method for determining forest age using high spatial resolution remotely sensed imagery. This method requires individual trees to be extracted from imagery and represented as points. We use a local maximum filter to generate points that are converted to Voronoi polygons. Properties of the Voronoi polygons are correlated with forest age and used to aggregate points (trees) into areas (stands) based on three forest age classes. Accuracy of the aggregation ranges from approximately 68% to 78% and identification of the mature class is more consistent and accurate than the younger classes. [Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (Auteur) We introduce a set of measures based on straight lines to assess land development levels in high-resolution (1 m) panchromatic satellite images. Most urban areas locally (such as in a 400 x 400 M2 area) exhibit a preponderance of straight-line features, generally appearing in fairly simple quasi-periodic organizations. Wilderness and rural areas produce line structures in more random spatial arrangements. We use this observation to perform an initial triage on the image to restrict the attention of subsequent more computationally intensive analyses. Statistical measures based on straight lines guide the analysis. We base these measures on length, contrast, orientation, periodicity, and location. On these, we trained and tested parametric and nonparametric classifiers. These tests were for a two-class problem (urban versus rural). However, because our ultimate goal is to extract residential regions, we then extended these ideas to address the detection of suburban regions. To do so, some use of spatial coherence is required; suburban regions are especially difficult to detect. Therefore, we introduce a decision system to perform suburban region classification via an overlapping voting method for consensus discovery. Our data were taken from regions all around the world, which underscores the robustness of our approach. Based on extensive testing, we can report very promising results in distinguishing developed areas.
