[Termes IGN] série temporelleRésumé : (Auteur) The Gravity field and steady-state Ocean Circulation Explorer (GOCE) satellite, launched on 17 March 2009, is designed to measure the Earth’s mean gravity field with unprecedented accuracy at spatial resolutions down to 100 km. The accurate calibration of the gravity gradiometer on-board GOCE is of utmost importance for achieving the mission goals. ESA’s baseline method for the calibration uses star sensor and accelerometer data of a dedicated calibration procedure, which is executed every 2 months. In this paper, we describe a method for monitoring the evolution of calibration parameter during that time. The method works with star sensor and accelerometer data and does not require gravity field models, which distinguishes it from other existing methods. We present time series of calibration parameters estimated from GOCE data from 1 November 2009 to 17 May 2010. The time series confirm drifts in the calibration parameters that are present in the results of other methods, including ESA’s baseline method. Although these drifts are very small, they degrade the gravity gradients, leading to the conclusion that the calibration parameters of the ESA’s baseline method need to be linearly interpolated. Further, we find a correction of -36 * 10-6 for one calibration parameter (in-line differential scale factor of the cross-track gradiometer arm), which improves the gravity gradient performance. The results are validated by investigating the trace of the calibrated gravity gradients and comparing calibrated gravity gradients with reference gradients computed along the GOCE orbit using the ITG-Grace-2010s gravity field model. [Termes IGN] zone semi-arideRésumé : (Auteur) Spatial and temporal variations of soil moisture strongly affect flooding, erosion, solute transport, and vegetation productivity. Their characterization offers numerous possibilities for the improvement of our understanding of complex land-surface-atmosphere interactions. In this paper, soil moisture dynamics at the soil's surface (the first centimeters) and in its root zone (at depths down to 1 m) are investigated using 25 x 25 km2 scale data (Advanced Scatterometer (ASCAT)/METorological OPerational (METOP) scatterometer), for a semiarid region in North Africa. Our study highlights the quality of the surface and root-zone soil moisture products, derived from ASCAT data recorded over a two-year period. Surface soil moisture tends to be highly variable because it is strongly influenced by atmospheric conditions (rain and evaporation). On the other hand, root-zone moisture is considerably less variable. A statistical drought-monitoring index, referred to as the “moisture anomaly index,” is derived from ASCAT and European Remote Sensing (ERS) time series. This index was tested with ERS and ASCAT products during the 1991-2010 study period. A strong correlation is found between the proposed index and the standardized precipitation index. [Termes IGN] température de luminanceRésumé : (Auteur) The European Space Agency's Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) mission was launched on the 2nd of November 2009. The first six months after launch, the so-called commissioning phase, were dedicated to test the functionalities of the spacecraft, the instrument, and the ground segment including the data processors. This phase was successfully completed in May 2010, and SMOS has since been in the routine operations phase and providing data products to the science community for over a year. The performance of the instrument has been within specifications. A parallel processing chain has been providing brightness temperatures in near-real time to operational centers, e.g., the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts. Data quality has been within specifications; however, radio-frequency interference (RFI) has been detected over large parts of Europe, China, Southern Asia, and the Middle East. Detecting and flagging contaminated observations remains a challenge as well as contacting national authorities to localize and eliminate RFI sources emitting in the protected band. The generation of Level 2 soil moisture and ocean salinity data is an ongoing activity with continuously improved processors. This article will summarize the mission status after one year of operations and present selected first results.
