(Auteur) A history of the use of satellites in geodesy within the Department of Defense is presented. A section on instrumentation describes the BC-4 and PC-1000 cameras, SECOR, laser, and Doppler satellite tracking equipment as well as the satellite flashing light system. The data used in several different solutions, the corrections applied and the preprocessing methods are described. In addition, the theory for satellite triangulation, trilateration, short arc and Doppler methods and the least squares collocation method for combining satellite derived and surface gravity data are discussed, Geodetic results are tabulated which include the coordinates of various tracking stations, the gravita--tional potential and the geoid. Other results discussed include evalua-tions of Love's number, solar radiation pressure, atmospheric drag vari-ations, earth's rotational rate, pole positions and crustal motion.Numéro de notice : 35504 Affiliation des auteurs : non IGN Thématique : POSITIONNEMENT Nature : Rapport Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=42354 Réservation

Some of these topics have been discussed in two previous IAF papers, but this is the first time that a serious and concentrated effort in this rather new area of space applications is to be made.
The major potentials of these earth oriented Earth and Ocean Satellite and Systems objectives is in the area of "utilization" of space science and technology. This is to help and further geophysical exploration, earthquake hazard assessment, synoptic monitoring of the dynamics of the earth and oceans, the exploration of the polar ice regions and the refinements of the earth's gravitational and magnetic fields. These objectives have practical usage in such applications disciplines as protection of life and property, protection and prevention of disasters, exploration of minerai and energy resources, the shipping and fishing industry, coastal zone construction and off-shore drillings. It is evident that rather large economical benefits will result by achieving the above objectives. It is, however, very difficult at this time to determine a real monetary value for the benefits expected. Fortunately, some work has already been performed in the past years. Methods have developed, ground and flight systems have been constructed, operated and launched to satisfy at least some of the elements mentioned before.
Geomagnetic spacecraft launched by the U.S. (OGOs) and the USSR (COSMOSs) have contributed to the construction of world magnetic field maps important for geologic studies. Other spacecraft, together with precision ground tracking systems (range and range rate, Doppler, LASER, Very Long Baseline Interferometer), have been used to develop rather sophisticated earth gravity models and geoids important to such applications as tectonic motion and earthquake studies, future global geophysical explorations and sea current studies. The Skylab and Nimbus missions contributed to the development of ocean surface wave and wind field models, sea surface temperature fields, ice fields and details of the ocean topography, to quote a few specific examples. The real intent of this paper is, as mentioned, to show one hand of some typical examples of how these applications objectives can be achieved. It is hoped that it will provide and act as a catalyst and driver for future IAF sessions to coure in this area of space applications.Numéro de notice : 15968 Affiliation des auteurs : non IGN Thématique : POSITIONNEMENT Nature : Monographie Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=82242 Réservation

[Termes IGN] satellite artificielIndex. décimale : 30.60 Géodésie spatiale Résumé : (auteur) The high accuracy of contemporary observational techniques now requires a better physical and mathematical understanding of the form of the tidal potential acting on the satellite and a gradual reshaping of the computational methods currently in use. The dependence of elastic responses and tidal Tags on the geographic position and on tidal frequency is introduced into the tidal potential on the surface of the Earth. By making use of Dirichlet's theorem we continue the tidal potential from the surface of the Earth into outer space. The final form of the disturbing tidal potential acting on the satellite is obtained in terms of the mean elements of the satellite and in terms of the standard arguments of the lunar theory. This form of the tidal potential is suitable for performing the analytical integration and for computation of the tidal effects over a long interval of time, because all agruments are linear or very nearly linear with respect to time. We interpreted the tidal effects in the motion of the satellite as perturbations in the orbital elements and as the small periodic variations in the coefficients of the spherical harmonies in the expansion of the geopotential. In transforming the exterior tidal potential to a form containing the orbital elements it was convenient to resort to the expansion in terms of the generalized spherical harmonies familiar from the theory of angular momentum in quantum mechanics.
