[Termes IGN] surveillance écologiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Leaf area index (LAI), fraction of absorbed photosynthetically active radiation (FAPAR), and surface broadband albedo are three routinely generated land-surface parameters from satellite observations, which have been widely used in land-surface modeling and environmental monitoring. Currently, most global land products are retrieved separately from individual satellite data. Many issues, such as data gaps, spatial and temporal inconsistencies, and insufficient accuracy under certain conditions resulting from the inadequacies of single-sensor observations, have made the incorporation of multiple sensors a reasonable solution. In this paper, an approach to simultaneous estimation of LAI, broadband albedo, and FAPAR from multiple-satellite sensors is further refined. The method, improved from that proposed in an earlier study using Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data, consists of several steps. First, a coupled dynamic and radiative-transfer model based on MODIS, SPOT/VEGETATION, and Multiangle Imaging SpectroRadiometer data was developed to retrieve LAI values and use them to construct a time-evolving dynamic model. Second, an iteration process with predefined exit criteria was developed to obtain consistent gap-filled LAI estimates. Third, a spectral albedo based on the retrieved LAI values was simulated using a radiative-transfer model and then converted to a broadband albedo using empirical methods. Snow-covered pixels identified by normalized difference snow index thresholds were adjusted to the weighted average of the underlying albedo and the maximum snow albedo. Finally, the FAPAR of green vegetation was calculated as a combination of the albedo at the top of the canopy, the soil albedo, and the transmittance of the PAR down to the background. Validation of retrieved LAI, albedo, and FAPAR values obtained from multiple-satellite data over ten study sites has demonstrated that the proposed method can produce more accurate products than presently distributed global products. A time series data-set (300 images) acquired from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer for the period July 2002–June 2015 were utilized to retrieve the spatial variations in the mean land surface temperature (LST) for the above-mentioned surface features. Results showed that vegetation, topography and surface albedo have negative correlations with LST. Vegetation/LST correlation has the maximum regression coefficient (R2 = 0.68) and albedo/LST has the minimum (R2 = 0.03). Cultivated lands reveal the lowest mean LST (40 °C) of Cairo region. There is a considerable urban heat island formed at Helwan south of Cairo, where heavy industries are settled. Industrial activities raised the mean LST of the region by at least 4 °C than the surrounding urban lands. [Termes IGN] température au solRésumé : (auteur) This research addressed the effects of downscaling cokriging Land Surface Temperature (LST) on estimation of Actual Evapotranspiration (AET) from remote sensing images. Two procedures were followed. We first applied downscaling cokriging to a coarse resolution LST product of MODIS at 1000 m. With its outcome, daily AET of a medium spatial resolution (250 m) was obtained using the Surface Energy Balance System (SEBS). Second, we downscaled a coarse AET map to medium spatial resolution (250 m). For both procedures, the 250 m resolution MODIS NDVI product was used as a co-variable. Validation was carried out using Landsat 8 images, from which LST was derived from the thermal bands. The two procedures were applied to an agricultural area with a traditional irrigation network in Iran. We obtained an average LST value of 305.8 K as compared to a downscaled LST value of 307.0 K. Reference AET estimated with SEBS using Landsat 8 data was equal to 5.756 mm day−1, as compared with a downscaled AET value of 5.571 mm day−1. The RMSE between reference AET and downscaled AET was equal to 1.26 mm day−1 (r = 0.49) and between reference and downscaled LST to 3.67 K (r = 0.48). The study showed that AET values obtained with the two downscaling procedures were similar to each other, but that AET showed a higher spatial variability if obtained with downscaled LST. We concluded that LST had a large effect on producing AET maps from Remote Sensing (RS) images, and that downscaling cokriging was helpful to provide daily AET maps at medium spatial resolution. [Termes IGN] température au solRésumé : (auteur) Continuous monitoring of actual evapotranspiration (ET) is critical for water resources management at both regional and local scales. Although the MODIS ET product (MOD16A2) provides viable sources for ET monitoring at 8-day intervals, the spatial resolution (1 km) is too coarse for local scale applications. In this study, we propose a machine learning and spatial temporal fusion (STF)-integrated approach in order to generate 8-day 30 m ET based on both MOD16A2 and Landsat 8 data with three schemes. Random forest machine learning was used to downscale MODIS 1 km ET to 30 m resolution based on nine Landsat-derived indicators including vegetation indices (VIs) and land surface temperature (LST). STF-based models including Spatial and Temporal Adaptive Reflectance Fusion Model and Spatio-Temporal Image Fusion Model were used to derive synthetic Landsat surface reflectance (scheme 1)/VIs (scheme 2)/ET (scheme 3) on Landsat-unavailable dates. The approach was tested over two study sites in the United States. The results showed that fusion of Landsat VIs produced the best accuracy of predicted ET (R2 = 0.52–0.97, RMSE = 0.47–3.0 mm/8 days and rRMSE = 6.4–37%). High density of cloud-clear Landsat image acquisitions and low spatial heterogeneity of Landsat VIs benefit the ET prediction. The downscaled 30 m ET had good agreement with MODIS ET (RMSE = 0.42–3.4 mm/8 days, rRMSE = 3.2–26%). Comparison with the in situ ET measurements showed that the downscaled ET had higher accuracy than MODIS ET. [Vedettes matières IGN] Inventaire forestierRésumé : (auteur) The Chinese National Forest Inventory (NFI) has reported increased forest coverage in China since 2000, however, the new satellite-based dataset Global Forest Change (GFC) finds decreased forest coverage. In this study, four satellite datasets are used to investigate this discrepancy in forest cover change estimates in China between 2000 and 2013: forest cover change estimated from MODIS Normalized Burn Ratio (NBR), existing MODIS Land Cover (LC) and Vegetation Continuous Fields (VCF) products, and the Landsat-based GFC. Among these satellite datasets, forest loss shows much better agreement in terms of total change area and spatial pattern than do forest gain. The net changes in forest cover as a proportion of China’s land area varied widely from increases of 1.56% in NBR, 1.93% in VCF, and 3.40% in LC to a decline of −0.40% in GFC. The magnitude of net forest increase derived from MODIS datasets (1.56–3.40%) is lower than that reported in NFI (3.41%). Algorithm parameters, different spatial resolutions, and inconsistent forest definitions could be important sources of the discrepancies. Although several MODIS datasets support an overall forest increase in China, the direction and magnitude of net forest change is still unknown due to the large uncertainties in satellite-derived estimates.
