[Termes IGN] visualisation de donnéesRésumé : (auteur) Increasing volumes of spatial data about urban areas are captured and made available via volunteered geographic information (VGI) sources, such as OpenStreetMap (OSM). Hence, new opportunities arise for regional exploration that can lead to improvements in the lives of citizens through spatial decision support. We believe that the VGI data of the urban environment could be used to present a constructive overview of the regional infrastructure with the advent of web technologies. Current location-based services provide general map-based information for the end users with conventional local search functionality, and hence, the presentation of the rich urban information is limited. In this work, we analyze the OSM data to classify the geo entities into consequential categories with facilities, landscape and land use distribution. We employ a visual overlay of heat map and interactive visualizations to present the regional characterization on OSM data classification. In the proposed interface, users are allowed to express a variety of spatial queries to exemplify their geographic interests. They can compare the characterization of urban areas with respect to multiple spatial dimensions of interest and can search for the most suitable region. The search experience is further enhanced via efficient optimization and interaction methods to support the decision making of end users. We report the end user acceptability and efficiency of the proposed system via usability studies and performance analysis comparison. [Termes IGN] zone tamponRésumé : (auteur) In recent years, the emergence and development of crowd-sourced geospatial data has provided challenges and opportunities to national mapping agencies as well as commercial mapping organisations. Crowd-sourced data involves non-specialists in data collection, sharing and maintenance. Compared to authoritative geospatial data, which is collected by surveyors or other geodata professionals, crowd-sourced data is less accurate and less structured, but often provides richer user-based information and reflects real world changes more quickly at a much lower cost. In order to maximize the synergistic use of authoritative and crowd-sourced geospatial data, this research investigates the problem of how to establish and validate correspondences (matches) between spatial features from disparate geospatial datasets. To reason about and validate matches between spatial features, a series of new qualitative spatial logics was developed. Their soundness, completeness, decidability and complexity theorems were proved for models based on a metric space. A software tool `MatchMaps' was developed, which generates matches using location and lexical information, and verifies consistency of matches using reasoning in description logic and qualitative spatial logic. MatchMaps was evaluated by the author and experts from Ordnance Survey, the national mapping agency of Great Britain. In experiments, it achieved high precision and recall, as well as reduced human effort. The methodology developed and implemented in MatchMaps has a wider application than matching authoritative and crowd-sourced data and could be applied wherever it is necessary to match two geospatial datasets of vector data. A sequence of participatory activities identified the need for ontologies related to tasks, algorithms, data quality and truth, content selection, layout constraints, and geographical modelling (the set of relations among a set of map features). The workshop resulted in a deeper shared understanding of relationships between concepts that lie at the heart of map generalization. At the conclusion to the workshop attendees were tasked with developing case studies that will be shared via a wiki, and reported upon in a subsequent meeting devoted to ontological modelling for map generalization. This report is not exhaustive in its presentation of all the ideas and material presented at the workshop, but seeks to convey the over-arching methodology and its core findings. [Termes IGN] ontologieRésumé : (Auteur) Ontology-based information publishing, retrieval, reuse, and integration have become popular research topics to address the challenges involved in exchanging data between heterogeneous sources. However, in most cases ontologies are still developed in a centralized top-down manner by a few knowledge engineers. Consequently, the role that developers play in conceptualizing a domain such as the geosciences is disproportional compared with the role of domain experts and especially potential end-users. These and other drawbacks have stimulated the creation of new methodologies focusing around collaboration. Based on a review of existing approaches, this article presents a two-step methodology and implementation to foster collaborative ontology engineering in the geosciences. Our approach consists of the development of a minimalistic core ontology acting as a catalyst and the creation of a virtual collaborative development cycle. Both methodology and prototypical implementation have been tested in the context of the EU-funded ForeStClim project which addresses environmental protection with respect to forests and climate change. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) In geographic information science and semantics, the computation of semantic similarity is widely recognised as key to supporting a vast number of tasks in information integration and retrieval. By contrast, the role of geo-semantic relatedness has been largely ignored. In natural language processing, semantic relatedness is often confused with the more specific semantic similarity. In this article, we discuss a notion of geo-semantic relatedness based on Lehrer’s semantic fields, and we compare it with geo-semantic similarity. We then describe and validate the Geo Relatedness and Similarity Dataset (GeReSiD), a new open dataset designed to evaluate computational measures of geo-semantic relatedness and similarity. This dataset is larger than existing datasets of this kind, and includes 97 geographic terms combined into 50 term pairs rated by 203 human subjects. GeReSiD is available online and can be used as an evaluation baseline to determine empirically to what degree a given computational model approximates geo-semantic relatedness and similarity.
