[Termes IGN] surveillance écologiqueRésumé : (Auteur) A new approach aimed at a better understanding of the state of pollution of the Black Sea coastal zone is suggested. It consists of the combined use of all available quasi-concurrent satellite information (NOAA AVHRR, TOPEX/ Poseidon, Jason-1, Terra/Aqua MODIS, Envisat ASAR, ERS-2 SAR and QuikSCAT) and was first applied during an operational seawater monitoring campaign in the coastal zone of the northeastern Black Sea conducted in 2006. The monitoring is based on daily receiving, processing and analysis of data different in nature (microwave radar images, optical and infrared data), resolution and surface coverage. These data allow us to retrieve information on seawater pollution, sea surface and air-sea boundary layer conditions, seawater temperature and suspended matter distributions, chlorophyll-a concentration, mesoscale water dynamics, near-surface wind, and surface wave fields. Such an approach helps in oil spill detection with synthetic aperture radar (SAR), especially in distinguishing oil slicks from look-alikes. The focus is on coastal seawater circulation mechanisms and their impact on the evolution of pollutants. [Termes IGN] segmentation d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) Ship detection in inhomogeneous regions using synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery is usually confronted with the severe heterogeneities of the oceans; this paper proposes a new detection scheme to overcome this problem. At first, an object-oriented segmentation algorithm is employed to partition the whole SAR image into several uniform regions. Then, for each partitioned region within water areas, the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test is applied to select the optimal background distribution model, and ship detection is carried out using the adaptive constant false alarm rate (CFAR) detector based on the selected probability density function. Finally, the detection results of each region are merged. An experiment based on an ENVISAT ASAR image of the Yangtze estuary show that the proposed strategy can effectively deal with heterogeneous scenarios in inhomogenous regions and greatly improves the detection results. [Termes IGN] vitesseRésumé : (Auteur) We present the follow-up of our previously published work, where we described a wavelet-based method to characterize the sea surface backscatter structures in Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images. The method relies on the ability of the 2-D continuous wavelet technique to detect the spatial structure of the Marine Atmospheric Boundary Layer (MABL) and to isolate wind-related cells and features. The analysis of the cells' geometry, molded by the radiometric characteristics of the sea surface, permits the identification of the wind direction inside the cells, due to the along-wind asymmetry of backscatter structures, and thus the computation of the wind speed through standard algorithms. Twenty-one SAR images (ERS-2 and Envisat ASAR Wide Swath) over the Mediterranean Sea have been analyzed, and the results are compared with satellite wind fields. The images cover a range of meteorological conditions from low to moderate winds. Comparison of the SAR-derived wind fields with those provided by satellite scatterometers indicates a good score of success (roughly 70%-80%). The developed methodology, once tested over an adequate number of images to derive statistically reliable results, could be routinely used to enrich SAR images with the wind field as well as to characterize the MABL in terms of size, distribution, and shape of the backscatter cells. [Termes IGN] surveillance de la végétationRésumé : (Auteur) Wetlands are areas where the presence of water at or near the soil surface drives the natural system. Imaging radars (SARs) have distinct characteristics which make them of significant value for monitoring and mapping wetland inundation dynamics. The presence or absence of water (which has a much higher dielectric constant than dry or wet soil) in wetlands may significantly alter the signal detected from these areas depending on the dominant vegetation type, density, and height. The objective of this paper is to present our current research efforts to explain and correctly simulate the radar response of wetland vegetation/inundation mixtures, and use simulations as an aid for retrieval applications. The radar response of junco marshes under different flood conditions and vegetation stages is analysed using a set of 13 multipolarization ENVISAT ASAR scenes acquired over the Paraná River Delta marshes during the period 2003-2005. The main aspect of the approach followed is the simulation of SAR wave interactions with vegetation and water, using an adapted and improved version of the EM model developed at Tor Vergata University. The results obtained indicate that with the refined EM model, it is possible to represent with a good accuracy VV and HH SAR responses of junco marshes for a variety of environmental conditions. Further work and data are needed to explain measured HV backscattering. The general agreement obtained between simulations and observations permitted the development of a simple retrieval scheme, and estimates of water level below the canopy were obtained for different environmental conditions. RMS errors of forward simulations and retrievals are reported and discussed. [Termes IGN] polarimétrie radarRésumé : (Auteur) This paper investigates the potential of multitemporal/polarization C-band SAR data for land-cover classification. Multitemporal Radarsat-1 data with HH polarization and ENVISAT ASAR data with VV polarization acquired in the Yedang plain, Korea are used for the classification of typical five land-cover classes in an agricultural area. The presented methodologies consist of two analytical stages: one for feature extraction and the other for classification based on the combination of features. Both a traditional SAR signal property analysis-based approach and principal-component analysis (PCA) are applied in the feature extraction stage. Special concerns are in the interpretation of each principal component by using principal-component loading. The tau model applied as a decision-level fusion methodology can provide a formal framework in which the posteriori probabilities derived from different sensor data can be combined. From the case study results, the combination of PCA-based features showed improved classification accuracy for both Radarsat-1 and ENVISAT ASAR data, as compared with the traditional SAR signal property analysis-based approach. The integration of PCA-based features based on multiple polarization (i.e. HH from Radarsat-1, and both VV and VH from ENVISAT ASAR) and different incidence angles contributed to a significant improvement of discrimination capability for dry fields which could not be properly classified by using only Radarsat-1 or ENVISAT ASAR data, and thus showed the best classification accuracy. The results of this case study indicate that the use of multiple polarization SAR data with a proper feature extraction stage would improve classification accuracy in multitemporal SAR data classification, although further consideration should be given to the polarization and incidence angle dependency of complex land-cover classes through more experiments.
