[Termes IGN] séismeRésumé : (Auteur) The magnitude Mw=6.3 earthquake in Al Hoceima, Morocco of 24 February, 2004 occurred in the active plate boundary accommodating the oblique convergence between Africa and Eurasia. Three different sets of estimates of its source parameters have already been published. We try to resolve the discrepancies between them by using additional data including two remote sensing satellite systems (ENVISAT and SPOT5). Using a model with a dislocation in an elastic half-space, we constrain the source parameters. The hypothesis of two subevents on distinct faults as inferred from seismological inversions is confirmed here by adopting a cross-fault mechanism. The rupture began on a left-lateral strike-slip fault striking at N10° azimuth with 90 cm of horizontal slip and then transferred to a right-lateral strike-slip fault striking at N312° azimuth with 85 cm of horizontal slip. The first fault is at 500 m depth from the free surface and the second fault is at 3 km depth. This model is consistent with ground-based observations, including GPS, seismology, and mapped surface fissures. The pair of faults activated in 2004 appears to constitute part of a complex seismogenic structure striking NNE-SSW that separates the Rif tectonic blocks. [Termes IGN] Oklahoma (Etats-Unis)Résumé : (Auteur) The advanced synthetic aperture radar (ASAR) onboard of the satellite ENVISAT can be operated in global monitoring (GM) mode. ASAR GM mode has delivered the first global multiyear C-band backscatter data set in HH polarization at a spatial resolution of 1 km. This paper investigates if ASAR GM can be used for retrieving soil moisture using a change detection approach over large regions. A method previously developed for the European Remote Sensing (ERS) scatterometer is adapted for use with ASAR GM and tested over Oklahoma, USA. The ASAR-GM-derived relative soil moisture index is compared to 50-km ERS soil moisture data and pointlike in situ measurements from the Oklahoma MESONET. Even though the scale gap from ASAR GM to the in situ measurements is less pronounced than in the case of the ERS scatterometer, the correlation for ASAR against the in situ measurements is, in general, somewhat weaker than for the ERS scatterometer. The analysis suggests that this is mainly due to the much higher noise level of ASAR GM compared to the ERS scatterometer. Therefore, some spatial averaging to 3-10 km is recommended to reduce the noise of the ASAR GM soil moisture images. Nevertheless, the study demonstrates that ASAR GM allows resolving spatial details in the soil moisture patterns not observable in the ERS scatterometer measurements while still retaining the basic capability of the ERS scatterometer to capture temporal trends over large areas. [Termes IGN] vitesseRésumé : (Auteur) The polarization ratio (VV/HH) of normalized radar cross section over ocean surface is processed from Envisat advanced synthetic aperture radar (ASAR) alternating polarization (AP) data and compared with existing electromagnetic (EM) scattering models. The processing of the AP data is based on LevelO (raw data) product that enables us to accurately compute the contribution from additive noise separately from each burst. This is important in estimating the correct polarization ratio, particularly at higher incidence angles where the relative contribution from noise becomes severe. A recently published EM scattering model, general curvature method (GCM), is extended here to incorporate scattering from breaking waves. The performance of this model with and without breaking waves is compared with AP data and with other models for the polarization ratio. The extended GCM model is furthermore used to assess the performance of wind speed retrieval in HH polarization. The inclusion of wave breaking in the GCM model reduces the polarization ratio standard deviation from 0.64 to 0.50 and the bias from -0.34 to 0.16, as compared to the measured ASAR AP polarization ratio. The best semiempirical model from literature gives 0.51 and 0.63 for the standard deviation and bias, respectively. The difference in performance is shown to be caused by the wind speed dependence not accounted for in the semiempirical model. Validation of the new polarization ratio model in combination with C-band Model Function (CMOD) for wind speed retrieval at HH polarization shows similar performance as at VV polarization. We conclude that the GCM polarization ratio model incorporating wave-breaking effects is found to reproduce well polarization ratio measurements (ASAR AP) versus wind vector and incidence angle. [Termes IGN] ventRésumé : (Auteur) In this paper some recent results on SAR observation of extreme surface wind conditions are summarized. Particular emphasis is put on the investigation of typhoons occurring in the North West Pacific. The study is based on the use of ENVISAT ASAR wide swath images (400 km x 400 km), which allow synoptic measurements of the complete mesoscale system at high resolution (150m). Surface wind speed for typhoon cases is determined from SAR measurements using the geophysical model function CMOD5. Further structures observed in the image like streaks indicating wind direction and the ring of maximum wind speed are additionally taken into account to reconstruct the typhoon wind field. The influence of heavy rain on the radar cross section is estimated from an existing radiative transfer model and compared to the SAR measurements. A new technique for the estimation of typhoon intensity from SAR data is presented, which makes use of a parametric type model. The main goal of the paper is the improvement of the estimation of maximum typhoon intensity using SAR data.
