[Termes IGN] vapeur d'eauRésumé : (Auteur) Atmospheric water vapour is a major limitation for high precision Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) applications due to its significant impact on microwave signals. We propose a statistical criterion to test whether an independent water vapour product can reduce water vapour effects on InSAR interferograms, and assess the potential of the Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) near-infrared water vapour products for correcting Advanced SAR (ASAR) data. Spatio-temporal comparisons show c- 1.1 mm agreement between MERIS and GPS/radiosonde water vapour products in terms, of standard deviations. One major limitation with the use of MERIS water vapour products is the frequency of cloud free conditions. Our analysis indicate, that in spite of the low global cloud free conditions (~251%), the frequency can be much higher for certain areas such as Eastern Tibet (~38%) and southern California (~48%). This suggests that MERIS water vapour products show potential for correcting ASAR interferometric measurements in certain regions. [Termes IGN] surveillance météorologiqueRésumé : (Auteur) The ENVISAT mission with a suite of high performance sensors offers some opportunities for mapping snow cover at regional and catchment scales. The spatial resolution of the Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer Instrument (MERIS) data and the spectral characteristics of the Advanced Along Track Scanning Radiometer (AATSR) data are suitable for these purposes. A new approach has been developed for the generation of snow cover products in Alpine regions, based on the combined use of ENVISAT optical data and topographic information. The Alpine region is selected as a test area to demonstrate the potential and the limitations of the novel approach. In particular, attention is focused on three regions of northern Italy (Valle d'Aosta, Piemonte, Lombardia). The first results obtained by the application of this new method to Earth Observation data will be presented and analysed. [Termes IGN] télédétection spatialeRésumé : (Auteur) Wildfires are a major environmental problem in many parts of the World, includinq some European countries around the Mediterranean where large forest fires have often spread uncontrollably ut frightenting rates in recent years. Such fires play a critical role in many aspects of ecosystem functioning, such as biodiversity and hydrology. They can destroy large tracts of the landscapes, as well as triggering the release of considerable amounts of the main greenhouse gas carbon dioxide, thereby affecting the global atmospheric chemistry of our planet. [Termes IGN] radianceRésumé : (Auteur) An operational system for autonomous above-water radiance measurements, called the SeaWiFS Photometer Revision for Incident Surface Measurements (SeaPRISM), was deployed at the Acqua Alta Oceanographic Tower in the northern Adriatic Sea and used for the validation of remote sensing radiometric products in coastal waters. The SeaPRISM data were compared with simultaneous data collected from an independent in-water system for a wide variety of sun elevations along with different atmospheric, seawater, and sea state conditions. The average absolute differences between the above- and in-water determinations of water-leaving radiances (computed linearly) were less than 4.5% in the 412-555-nm spectral interval. A similar comparison for normalized water-leaving radiances showed average absolute differences less than 5.1%. The comparison between normalized water-leaving radiances computed from remote sensing and SeaPRISM matchup data, showed absolute spectral average (linear) differences of 17.0%, 22.1%, and 20.8% for SeaWiFS, MODIS, and MERIS, respectively. The results, in keeping with those produced by independent in-water systems, suggest the feasibility of operational coastal networks of autonomous above-water radiometers deployed on fixed platforms (towers, lighthouses, navigation aids, etc.) to support ocean color validation activities. [Termes IGN] rivièreRésumé : (Auteur) The growing concern about our planet's water resources, coupled with the economically driven decrease in ground-based gauge measurements, has focused attention on the possibility of using space-based data sets for remote measurements of river and lake heights. The most direct measurements of inland water heights are obtained from satellite altimeters, with long time series of such observations having been built up over the post decade. ESA has been developing new global river and lake monitoring products, including an expert processing system, with the help of De Montfort University (UK). A seven-year-long time series of samples was distributed to the hydrology community at the CNES Hydrology from Space Workshop in Toulouse last October in order to validate the user requirements. They responded very favorably and are now impatient to get their hands on a decade of global river-and lake-level products, as well as the latest near-real-time products coming from ESA's Envisat mission.
