[Termes IGN] variabilitéRésumé : (Auteur) This study investigates fire-induced spectral changes detected by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) in different land-cover types in Borneo. Linear discriminant analysis is used to determine the most powerful band combinations among the MODIS reflective bands for discrimination between burnt and unburnt areas in each land-cover type. The results show that the nature of fire-induced changes is dependent on pre-fire vegetation characteristics in this region. Bands 1 (0.64 um), 2 (0.86 um), and 7 (2.14 um) are found to be the most sensitive bands in land-cover types dominated by green vegetation, and consequently indices or combinations of indices using these three bands are potentially effective for burnt-area detection in the majority of areas. In land-cover types dominated by dry vegetation and soil, MODIS band 5 (1.24 um) alone showed the greatest statistical separability and could not be significantly improved by any multiband index. [Termes IGN] prévention des risquesRésumé : (Auteur) This paper presents a sub-pixel thermal anomaly detection method based on predicting background pixel intensities using a non-linear function of a plurality of past images of the inspected scene. At present, the multitemporal approach to thermal anomaly detection is in its early development stage. In case of space-borne surveillance the multitemporal detection is complicated by both spatial and temporal variability of background surface properties, weather influences, viewing geometries, sensor noise, residual misregistration, and other factors. We use the problem of fire detection and the MODIS data to demonstrate that advanced multitemporal detection methods can potentially outperform the operationally used optimized contextual algorithms both under morning and evening conditions. [Termes IGN] Leaf Area Index
[Termes IGN] limite de résolution géométriqueRésumé : (Auteur) A new set of recently developed leaf area index (LAI) algorithms has been employed for producing a global LAI dataset at 1 km resolution and in time-steps of 10 days, using data from the Satellite pour l'observation de la terre (SPOT) VEGETATION (VGT) sensor. In this paper, this new LAI product is compared with the global MODIS Collection 4 LAI product over four validation sites in North America. The accuracy of both LAI products is assessed against seven high resolution ETM+ LAI maps derived from field measurements in 2000, 2001, and 2003. Both products were closely matched outside growing season. The MODIS product tended to be more variable than the VGT product during the summer period when the LAI was maximum. VGT and ETM+ LAI maps agreed well at three out of the four sites. The median relative absolute error of the VGT LAI product varied from 24% to 75% at 1 km scale and it ranged from 34% to 88% for the MODIS LAI product. The importance of correcting field measurements for the clumping effect is illustrated at the deciduous broadleaf forest site (HARV). Inclusion of the sub-pixel land cover information improved the quality of LAI estimates for the prairie grassland KONZ site. Further improvement of the global VGT LAI product is suggested by production and inclusion of pixel-specific global foliage clumping index and forest background reflectance maps that would serve as an input into the VGT LAI algorithms. [Termes IGN] tsunamiRésumé : (Auteur) The massive 26 December 2004 earthquake and tsunami affected a large geographic region in the Indian Ocean basin, hitting Indonesia's Aceh province on the island of Sumatra particularly hard. In this study, tsunami inundation distances and run-up elevations on the NW Sumatran coast are assessed at a regional scale using remotely sensed data (ASTER, QuickBird and SRTM). Using satellite data in disaster zones allows tsunami scientists to access data in difficult areas (logistically and politically), along with the other benefits that such data has to offer (e.g. spectral and spatial). Field work rapidly following the tsunami allowed the collection of samples, elevation data and other information through interviews with survivors that validated the remotely sensed observations. Median run-up elevations extracted from SRTM and ASTER generated digital elevation models (DEMs) for the Banda Aceh area were 16 m and 9.7 m above sea level respectively, and field measurements averaged 9 m. In Meulaboh, median run-up elevations were 9 m (SRTM) and 6.6 m (ASTER) which are close to the 10-15 m range determined in the field. Run-up elevations at Jantang have a bimodal distribution with peaks that correspond to inundation limits in the floodplains (~10 m in both the SRTM and ASTER data) and cliffs (32 m in the ASTER and less well-defined in the SRTM data). Slope maps generated from SRTM and ASTER DEMs show that the inundation limit rarely exceeds slopes of 4°. Using the Aceh area as a control, SRTM and ASTER data and the range of possible products derived from them is here taken as potential suitable tool for computer inundation models that aid in evacuation planning. [Termes IGN] villeRésumé : (Auteur) Four Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection radiometer (ASTER) satellite scenes of Dubai and Abu Dhabi with channels from the visible-near infrared (VNIR) to the thermal infrared (TIR) were analysed to show variations in surface temperature, albedo, emissivity and net radiation in different urban and rural classes. For a better understanding of the spatial coherences of surface properties a land use classification was derived. The different classes were then spatially and temporally compared. The investigations show in the daytime a distinct surface cool island for Dubai and surface cool areas at Abu Dhabi city and its surrounding mangrove areas. Net radiation is mainly controlled by the albedo. The albedo in urban areas is lower than in their surrounding desert environments, therefore the net radiation is higher in the urban areas. The surface temperatures behave contrary to the net radiation and are higher in land use classes, where water is available.
