We contend not only that cartography is a coherent and distinctive discipline (although we do consider the semantics involved in, and rationale for, referring to it by that name), but that human society cannot function without maps. The major reason for this is that each map is created for a human or societal purpose – and this purpose defines the nature and utility of the map. The role of a map defines the very nature of a map itself, and we reflect on the creation, functionality, and success of mapping activity. This leads us to conclude with pointers to functional definition of the map. Drawing from literature in media studies and geography - and the work of Michel Foucault and Doreen Massey - it examines how geographical and historical material, social, and cultural conditions are embedded in the way in which contemporary (digital) cartographies are read, deployed, and engaged. This is explored through seventeen walking interviews in Hong Kong and Sydney, as potent discourses like cartographic reason continue to transform and weave through the world in ways that haunt mobile mapping and bring old conflicts into new media. In doing so, Mobile Mapping offers an interdisciplinary rethinking about how multiple translations of spatial knowledges between rational digital epistemologies and tacit ways of understanding space and experience might be conceptualized and researched. Doing so will provide further insight into the ways that maps, mapping epistemologies, and mapper identities emerge in the practices of everyday life. In order to deconstruct the map, and ultimately the power of maps, it is necessary to investigate maps from the bottom up as well as the top down. The motivations of amateur cartographers, the contexts in which map-making takes place, and the technological processes involved are all important factors to consider when examining how and why maps are produced. Empirical ethnographic evidence from a study of OpenStreetMap and humanitarian “mapping parties” is presented here to demonstrate how the often overlooked cultures of amateur map-making offer novel perspectives on who contemporary map-makers are and what motivates them to map. It is shown that amateur map-making is a broad category that includes close-knit hobby communities and more diverse groups of enthusiastic volunteers. As cartography continues to open up and become more accessible through a range of digital mapping technologies, studying these shifts will be important for understanding how and why the role of the map in contemporary life is changing. Face à l’opacité des portails Internet qui diffusent des données géographiques, comment tenter d’identifier et de qualifier les pratiques qui y sont associées ? Nous expérimentons une méthode dont l’objectif est de déconstruire le géoweb pour en révéler les usages. Il s’agit, d’une part, d’analyser les plateformes web qui diffusent des données géographiques en explorant leurs traces numériques et, d’autre part, de soumettre ces traces aux usagers eux-mêmes pour les amener à adopter une posture réflexive. En s’inspirant des visual studies et en particulier de la photo elicitation, nous proposons un retour sur l’intérêt de cette approche mixte, inductive et réflexive. Deux études de cas viennent illustrer notre proposition en s’intéressant à l’information géographique institutionnelle et volontaire. Ces exemples permettent d’alimenter une discussion sur la place de la géomatique dans la mise en œuvre d’approches interdisciplinaires pour repenser la critique par le prisme des usages.
