[Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) Species distribution models (SDMs) are widely used to hindcast or forecast suitable habitat conditions during climate change. Although distant populations of a given species may show local adaptations to diverging environmental conditions, traditional SDMs disregard intraspecific variation. Yet, incorporating genetic information into SDMs could improve predictions. Here we aimed at investigating whether genetically informed SDMs would outperform traditional SDMs. Using published information on the spatial genetic structure of the European Beech Fagus sylvatica L. (1753), we built lineage-specific SDMs for each phylogenetic group of the species. We then combined all lineage-specific SDMs into a single genetically informed SDM that we compared against a traditional SDM approach. We finally compared SDMs’ predictions against independent datasets of present-day distribution as well as fossil distribution data from the Mid-Holocene, using six metrics of model performance. We found that aggregating lineage-specific SDMs into a single genetically informed SDM increased model performances to identify suitable areas currently occupied by F. sylvatica. In comparison to a traditional SDM, the genetically informed SDM we built for F. sylvatica assigned higher probabilities of occurrence during the Mid-Holocene at locations where fossil records were found. Aggregating lineage-specific SDMs into a single genetically informed SDM seems to outperform the traditional SDM approach, especially so when the aim is to identify potentially suitable areas of occupancy. This could be particularly useful for the identification of cryptic refugia that remain undetected by traditional SDMs. Genetically informed SDMs have the potential to improve our understanding of species redistribution under climate change. [Termes IGN] tectoniqueRésumé : (auteur) We present the geomorphology of the Southern Atbai Plain (Eastern Sudan) and the western edge of the Eritrean Highlands (Western Eritrea), in the eastern Sahel. The mountainous area consists of Paleo-Proterozoic gneiss and Neo-Proterozoic igneous rocks and meta-volcanic assemblages shaped as inselbergs and whaleback landforms by weathering. Bare-rock hills emerge from a gentle glacis that oversees the Southern Atbai alluvial plain, located between the Atbara and Gash Rivers. The plain features the SSE-NNW-oriented endorheic terminal fan of the Gash River and is crossed by intricate Early to Late Pleistocene paleochannels, whose evolution was controlled by the interplay between Quaternary regional tectonics and arid to humid climatic and environmental oscillations. The map is intended to interpret the evolution of local landscape, thus representing a tool for reconstructing the spatial and temporal distribution of Late Quaternary archaeological features and their functional relationships with the fossil fluvial system and the western foothills. Based on the diversity trends observed at candidate genes associated to drought stress, we inferred a differential species’ adaptive potential.
Context: Clinal genetic variation in natural populations could reflect either recent demographic history or the evolution of adapted genotypes along heterogeneous environments.
Aims: We describe genetic variation patterns in three Nothofagus species of South American temperate forests, growing along steep rainfall gradients. Our hypothesis is that the selection pressure along this gradient reinforces the genetic structure previously shaped by Pleistocene climate oscillations.
Methods: We screened variation along gradients at putative adaptive markers: candidate genes involved in response to drought, and EST-SSRs linked to drought stress genes. Genomic SSRs (gSSRs) were used to decouple the incidence of demographic events in the genetic structure.
Results: Genetic diversity at SSRs agreed with the putative location of cryptic Pleistocene refugia in Nothofagus. In addition, each species showed different trends for nucleotide diversity at candidate genes. Unbiased heterozygosity significantly correlated with precipitation at EST-SSRs in Nothofagus nervosa. We found evidences of balancing selection and several SNPs departed from neutral expectations.
Conclusions: Nothofagus genetic variability shows a strong imprint of demographic changes that reveals refugia location for the species during Pleistocene. [Termes IGN] SyrieRésumé : (Auteur) This research aimed at studying the spectral reflectance intensity of different exposed volcanic rocks in Syria, and drawing their curves by radiometer measurements. In order to reach this goal, we have studied different kinds of volcanic rocks related to different ages, from the Jurassic until the recent Quaternary, and composed of fresh and altered basalt, phonolite and volcanic tuff. We measured the reflected rays of the volcanic rocks by using radiometers equipped with filters for the multi-spectral scanners (TM, MSS and SPOT), and the recorded information was treated according to the equation Reflectance = (Radiance + Dark current) Calibration factor / (Irradiance+ Dark current) Calibration factor. Furthermore, through this equation, we made a calculation for the reflectance intensity of each kind of measured rocks with different channels. We then showed the results of our measurements graphically. After that, we represented the average of the reflectance intensity curves for the various kinds of rocks, and for each kind of the mentioned scanners. We also determined the relative values of reflection in the different spectral channels to cancel the effect of the shadow, and to obtain the best information to help in designing and developing remote sensing survey equipment to recognize the mentioned rocks accurately. [Termes IGN] Rhin (bassin)Résumé : (Auteur) In Holocene palaeogeographical studies, GIS nowadays is used in various ways, embracing either GIS modelling possibilities or GIS spatial data storage functionality. This paper is an example of the latter type of GIS use for reconstruction of the Holocene Rhine-Meuse delta (128x75 km; part of the Dutch coastal plain). Depositional traces of river courses (channel belts) are major features to map. We digitized mapped channel belt fragments and stored their reconstructed ages in a linked table. The GIS data structure allows checking for internal consistency of the implemented reconstruction, enabling iterative improvement while digitizing and labelling. Palaeogeographical maps for any given time during the Holocene result from GIS-database queries. Coupled to the GIS are high-resolution digital elevation data (sub-decimetre accurate laser-altimetry data covering the entire study area) and a database of ca 100000 borehole descriptions, allowing for further mapping improvements. The GIS structure and digital data together greatly improved mapping and enable larger areas to be mapped in greater detail with greater accuracy and in less time.
