[Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Inventory and monitoring of eroded areas at basin scale (Mm2) can be very useful for environmental planning and can help to reduce land degradation and sediment yield to streams. Combined use of remote sensing images and auxiliary geocoded data has been widely used for mapping various environmental features, including surface erosion. Here an example is presented in the Yesa reservoir catchment in the Spanish Pyrenees. Several combinations of radiometric data (a sequence of images from different seasons of the year) and other geocoded information, including topographical (altitude and slope) and geological maps, were compared in their ability to predict previously identified erosive features. Multinomial logistic regression was used as the classification method. The datasets were compared in terms of classification error statistics (sensitivity and specificity) using an independent random sample. The incorporation of lithological information improved the discrimination of eroded areas, but the same did not happen in the case of topographical information. Two final maps of eroded areas were obtained applying an equal predicted area rule and an equal error rate rule. [Termes IGN] occupation du solRésumé : (Auteur) Morphological changes on Sagar Island are occurring at an alarming rate due to both natural and anthropogenic activities. The eastern part of the island is rapidly eroding due to destabilization and growth of tidal flats in the Muriganga estuary and the gradual shifting of water current towards the island. Over the last four years (1996–1999), the rate of coastal erosion has been much higher (11.35 km2) than accretion (2.65 km2), compared with the conditions prior to 1996. Coastal places like Dublat, Basantpur, Gobindapur, Collectorganj, and Sumatinagar have become the critical zones of erosion. The shorelines along the eastern and south-western sides are receding. The extent of coverage of the paddy field, sandy beaches, and land vegetation has decreased from 1996 to 1999 by 15.7, 1.1, and 3.5 km2, respectively. An integrated database of the island was generated using spatial and non-spatial data collected through field survey, satellite images of IRS-1C LISS III, and topomaps. Spatial data include coastal geomorphological landforms, land-use and land cover, shoreline change, sandy beaches, coastal erosion sites, agricultural fields, aquaculture sites, and coastal riparian vegetations. Non-spatial data include the demography and evolution of the island. The main critical environmental issues of the island are: (1) degradation of mangrove forests and coastal erosion; (2) overpopulation and over-exploitation of living resources; and (3) destruction of seawalls. Further degradation may lead to extinction of a variety of species and scarcity of marine food unless properly managed and regulated. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Integrating multiple data sources is a very important strategy to obtain relevant solutions in geo-scientific analysis. This paper mainly deals with the integration of Geographical Information System (GIS) data, stereo aerial imagery and a Digital Surface Model (DSM) to extract wind erosion obstacles (namely tree rows and hedges) in open landscapes. Different approaches, such as image segmentation, edge extraction, linking, grouping and 3-dimensional verification with the DSM, are combined to extract the objects of interest. Experiments show that most wind erosion obstacles can be successfully extracted by the developed system. [Termes IGN] voxelRésumé : (Auteur) In terms of geometry, existing approaches for 3D GIS modelling can be classified into three types: surface-based, volume-based, and hybrids. These approaches are suitable for representing rigid geo-objects, but so far there are no ideal GIS modelling methods for simulation of soft geo-objects such as flowing water and soil. In this study, a GIS flow element (FE) and GIS soft voxel (SV) were used for simulation of overland flow and soil erosion. The length of a GIS FE is directly proportional to the velocity of overland flow, while the inclination of a GIS FE represents the direction of overland flow. The GIS SV is generated by implicit functions, which can be utilized to create a smoothed surface. This study reveals that GIS FEs can realistically represent the dynamics and stochastics of soft geo-objects, while GIS SVs can simulate deformation of soft geo-objects. Moreover, both of these approaches can reflect geoscientific laws because the animation of 3D scenarios is controlled by geoscientific models.
