[Termes IGN] nivellement directRésumé : (Auteur) As rates of sea-level rise continue to increase due to climate change, land planners require accurate spatial analyses on the extent and timing of coastal flooding and associated hazards. Digital elevation data used to evaluate coastal vulnerability to flooding are available at various horizontal and vertical resolutions. However, the quality of digital elevation models (DEM) used in environmental assessment can significantly affect the detection of topographic features and the magnitude of hydrological processes. We used lidar elevation data in coastal North Carolina, USA to investigate the effects of horizontal resolution and connectivity on the extent and timing of flooding from sea-level rise. We found that the rate and extent of inundation were dependent on horizontal resolution and assumptions made on hydrological connectivity. The variation in flood extent was much larger (760 km2) at low sea-level projections (~0.9 m, 114 km2) due to the effect of hydrological corrections on the coarse-scale DEM and topographic complexity at low elevations. Lidar elevation data provide a significant advance in mapping potential coastal flooding, but the extent and timing of inundation are sensitive to horizontal resolution and the modelling of hydrological connectivity. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueIndex. décimale : MX Mémoires divers Résumé : (Auteur) Soil loss is a global issue, as it affects agriculture by removing the top soil containing important nutrients. Estimating soil loss through the five factors influencing soil erosion (rainfall erosivity, topography, soil erodibility, cropping management, and erosion control practice) is a way to plan the spatial expansion of cropped area. Mapping rainfall erosivity can identify where rainfall erosion could be minimal, and so where less erosion control would be needed. It is however complex to map erosivity globally, because of the lack of a standard, global equation to estimate it. Many equations have been derived to calculate a number of erosivity indices, but no studies have been carried out to unify them all. In this thesis, it was hypothesized that equations derived in the same climatic conditions could be comparable, so that these equations could be applied to other areas with the same climatic characteristics. The methodology followed in this thesis was to identify these equations developed in different parts of the world. The 40 equations were then placed in a dataset to display them on a world map. Five case studies were chosen where different equations had been applied to the same climate. In each case study, the predicted annual erosivity values were compared to see if there was any consensus or conflicts between the equations used. The case studies showed that there was generally little agreement between equations used within the same climate classification, leading to the conclusion that it is not possible to extrapolate the equations to determine erosivity indices. Nevertheless, some important characteristics that should be present in an erosivity equation were highlighted. Research still needs to be done to find a global erosivity index and ways to extrapolate this spatially, with the aim of planning more sustainable crop production in the future. [Termes IGN] utilisation du solRésumé : (Auteur) Using Landsat TM data from 1995 and 2000, changes in the landscape erosion pattern of the Yellow River Basin, China were analysed. The aim was to improve our understanding of soil-erosion change so that sustainable land use could be established. First, a soil-erosion intensity index model was developed to study soil-erosion intensity change in the study area. Over the 5 years, the areas of weak erosion, moderate erosion, severe erosion, and very severe erosion all increased. The area of weak erosion increased dramatically by 7.94*105 ha, and areas of slight erosion and acute erosion decreased by 1.93*106 ha and 4.50*104 ha, respectively. The results show that while the intensity of soil erosion has gradually been decreasing as a whole, in some regions the soil erosion is becoming more severe. Based on landscape indices, the pattern of changes in soil erosion over the past 5 years was analysed. The changes in landscape pattern of soil erosion resulted from human activities. Analysis showed that human impact increases fragmentation, having three major effects on landscape pattern, reduction in patch area, variations in patch shape, and changes in spatial pattern. In the study area, population growth, farming, governmental policy and forest degradation are the major factors causing soil erosion change over a 5-year period. [Termes IGN] modèle RUSLERésumé : (Auteur) Soil conservation planning often requires estimates of soil erosion at a catchment or regional scale. Predictive models such as Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) and its subsequent Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) are useful tools to generate the quantitative estimates necessary for designing sound conservation measures. However, large-scale soil erosion model-factor parameterization and quantification is difficult due to the costs, labor and time involved. Among the soil erosion parameters, the vegetative cover or C factor has been one of the most difficult to estimate over broad geographic areas. The C factor represents the effects of vegetation canopy and ground covers in reducing soil loss. Traditional methods for the extraction of vegetation information from remote sensing data such as classification techniques and vegetation indices were found to be inaccurate. Thus, this study presents a new approach based on Spectral Mixture Analysis (SMA) of Landsat ETM data to map the C factor for use in the modeling of soil erosion. A desirable feature of SMA is that it estimates the fractional abundance of ground cover and bare soils simultaneously, which is appropriate for soil erosion analysis. Hence, we estimated the C factor by utilizing the results of SMA on a pixel-by-pixel basis. We specifically used a linear SMA (LSMA) model and performed a minimum noise fraction (MNF) transformation and pixel purity index (PPI) on Landsat ETM image to derive the proportion of ground cover (vegetation and non-photosynthetic materials) and bare soil within a pixel. The end-members were selected based on the purest pixels found using PPI with reference to very high-resolution QuickBird image and actual field data. Results showed that the C factor value estimated using LSMA correlated strongly with the values measured in the field. The correlation coefficient (r) obtained was 0.94. A comparative analysis between NDVI- and LSMA-derived C factors also proved that the latter produced a more detailed spatial variability, as well as generated more accurate erosion estimates when used as input to RUSLE model. The QuickBird image coupled with field data was used in the validation of results.
