[Termes IGN] variogrammeRésumé : (Auteur) Geostatistical methods make it possible to estimate the random errors in digital terrain models (DTMs) from one single set of measurements. After average interpolating trend removal, the error is derived from the variogram of the residual data set. This method is compared with a procedure that uses triangulation and resampling of two overlapping DTMs for extracting the error component. Eighteen small areas measured with a multibeam echo sounder are selected for the comparison. In the experiment the two methods come out with similar values for the random error. A by-product of the experiment is the development of a model for the average noise reduction caused by resampling of triangle models (TINs). The method we apply for the trend computation has time complexity O(n). Since the noise computation only requires the part of the variogram close to the origin, it is possible to formulate the computation of the random error in DTMs in O(n) time. [Termes IGN] propagation d'erreurRésumé : (Auteur) The aim of our study was to characterize statistical and spatial details of the errors in a fine toposcale DEM derived by contour data. The fine toposcale DEMs are typically represented in a 5-50 m grid and used in the application scale 1:10000-1:50000. The errors were determined by using high-quality reference data covering the entire study area from an airborne laser scanner. The work was motivated because of the essential role played by the correct characterization of DEM error in error-propagation studies. The results showed that the spatial autocorrelation of the fine toposcale DEM error was the result of a complex combination of random and systematic-like components, and its appropriate modelling by geostatistical methods is problematic because of the small extent of the areas in which the assumption of stationarity is valid. In addition, describing the shape of the DEM error distribution was impossible with a single parameter of dispersion. This was due to a large number of outliers, which suggests that more robust descriptors of the error should be used in addition to conventional error statistics. [Termes IGN] test de performanceRésumé : (Auteur) The NASA/NGA Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) collected interferometric radar data which has been used by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory to generate a near-global topography data product for latitudes smaller than 60°. One of the primary goals of the mission was to produce a data set that was globally consistent and with quantified errors. To achieve this goal, an extensive global ground campaign was conducted by NGA and NASA to collect ground truth that would allow for the global validation of this unique data set. This paper documents the results of this SRTM validation effort using this global data set. The table shown below summarizes our results (all quantities represent 90 percent errors in meters). [Termes IGN] système de coordonnéesRésumé : (Auteur) The determination of object coordinates based on direct sensor orientation is an extrapolation from the projection centers to the ground coordinate system. Like any extrapolation, it is sensitive to random and systematic errors, as well as, to improper data handling. Direct sensor orientation is based on the combination of an Inertial Measurement System (IMU) and GPS. The GPS antenna, the IMU, and the imaging sensor are located in different positions, and the latter two have different orientations. Therefore, the calibration of all sensors and the relation between the sensors is of vital importance for precise ground positioning. The system calibration includes the determination of the boresight misalignment, the interior camera orientation, and the GPS antenna offset. A rigorous mathematical model is required. The inner orientation of the camera used has to be determined under flight conditions to achieve sufficient results. In this paper, the influence of the system calibration to the direct sensor orientation and improper data handling will be shown.
