[Termes IGN] propagation d'erreurRésumé : (auteur) Using GNSS-Acoustic (GNSS-A) technology to establish the seafloor geodetic datum is both feasible and flexible and thus has become an important way to obtain the absolute positions of seafloor control points. However, numerous errors are inevitable in marine surveying, including systematic errors and gross errors caused by GNSS dynamic positioning, inaccurate sound velocity profile measurements, and ocean ambient noise, and their interference will be directly reflected in the positioning results. To accurately calculate the seafloor control point coordinates, this paper first notes that the general error propagation law (EPL) method is defective in dealing with various error factors in GNSS-A positioning. A more rigorous method incorporates the time-varying term of the sound velocity ranging error into the coefficient matrix of the underwater observation equation, and the transducer position error should be considered. Therefore, a Gauss-Helmert (GH) model is used for seafloor control point positioning. Then, considering the dual nonlinearity of the model, a Lagrange objective function is constructed to derive its solution algorithm. On this basis, considering the gross errors polluting of the observations, the robust estimation principle is introduced, and the robust solution steps are given. Finally, simulation experiments and a testing experiment in the sea area near Jiaozhou Bay are used to verify the performance of the new method. The results show that the functional relationship and stochastic model of the nonlinear GH model for seafloor point positioning are reasonably described. Under ideal conditions with no gross errors and either different water depths or different transducer position errors, the accuracy and stability of the new method are both higher than those of the EPL method. When the observations are polluted by gross errors, the robust algorithm of the new method can accurately identify the abnormal information. By improving the robustness of the observation and structure spaces, the positioning precision of the 3D point deviation results can be optimized, and the solution performance of the new method is superior to that of the general method. [Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) We investigate the flux balance of managed and protected forests and the effects of using wood. Flux parameters of CO2 uptake and respiration do not differ between managed and protected forests. Accounting of harvest as immediate emission by IPCC guidelines results in a bias of forest climate mitigation towards storage and neglects the avoidance of fossil-fuel use by wood use. [Termes IGN] variabilitéRésumé : (auteur) We further developed a space–time Kalman approach to investigate time-fixed and time-variable signals in vertical land motion (VLM) and residual altimeter systematic errors around the Australian coast, through combining multi-mission absolute sea-level (ASL), relative sea-level from tide gauges (TGs) and Global Positioning System (GPS) height time series. Our results confirmed coastal subsidence in broad agreement with GPS velocities and unexplained by glacial isostatic adjustment alone. VLM determined at individual TGs differs from spatially interpolated GPS velocities by up to ~ 1.5 mm/year, yielding a ~ 40% reduction in RMSE of geographic ASL variability at TGs around Australia. Our mission-specific altimeter error estimates are small but significant (typically within ~ ± 0.5–1.0 mm/year), with negligible effect on the average ASL rate. Our circum-Australia ASL rate is higher than previous results, suggesting an acceleration in the ~ 27-year time series. Analysis of the time-variability of altimeter errors confirmed stability for most missions except for Jason-2 with an anomaly reaching ~ 2.8 mm/year in the first ~ 3.5 years of operation, supported by analysis from the Bass Strait altimeter validation facility. Data predominantly from the reference missions and located well off narrow shelf regions was shown to bias results by as much as ~ 0.5 mm/year and highlights that residual oceanographic signals remain a fundamental limitation. Incorporating non-reference-mission measurements well on the shelf helped to mitigate this effect. Comparing stacked nonlinear VLM estimates and altimeter systematic errors with the El Niño-Southern Oscillation shows weak correlation and suggests our approach improves the ability to explore nonlinear localized signals and is suitable for other regional- and global-scale studies. [Vedettes matières IGN] Inventaire forestierRésumé : (auteur) Survey practitioners commonly encounter various types of nonresponse and strive to implement methods that mitigate any resulting bias when reporting results. In national forest inventories (NFI), complete or partial nonresponse usually results from hazardous conditions or lack of plot access permission. While many factors may be related to nonresponse, the two primary factors in the NFI of the USA are public/private land ownership and office/field plot status. To ameliorate potential nonresponse bias, these factors should be accounted for in the estimation process. An estimation method is presented where response homogeneity groups (RHGs) account for differential nonresponse rates between forest/nonforest plots. In a post-stratified estimation context, ratio-to-size estimators are used in RHGs within post-strata to avoid potential bias in variance estimates arising from partial plot nonresponse. Combining RHGs within post-strata requires a complex variance estimator that includes four sources of uncertainty. Testing of the estimation method on a synthetic population showed the approach is essentially unbiased. Application to NFI data from 10 states in the USA consistently showed the RHG method produced state-level estimates of forestland area that were 0.1%–3.6% larger than the current post-stratified estimation procedure. It is suggested that these differences are indicative of the nonresponse bias present when plots having differential nonresponse rates are not accounted for. [Termes IGN] MICROSCOPE (mission)
[Termes IGN] principe d'équivalenceRésumé : (auteur) The MICROSCOPE mission was designed to test the weak equivalence principle (WEP), stating the equality between the inertial and the gravitational masses, with a precision of 10−15 in terms of the Eötvös ratio η. Its experimental test consisted of comparing the accelerations undergone by two collocated test masses of different compositions as they orbited the Earth, by measuring the electrostatic forces required to keep them in equilibrium. This was done with ultrasensitive differential electrostatic accelerometers onboard a drag-free satellite. The mission lasted two and a half years, cumulating five months worth of science free-fall data, two-thirds with a pair of test masses of different compositions—titanium and platinum alloys—and the last third with a reference pair of test masses of the same composition—platinum. We summarize the data analysis, with an emphasis on the characterization of the systematic uncertainties due to thermal instabilities and on the correction of short-lived events which could mimic a WEP violation signal. We found no violation of the WEP, with the Eötvös parameter of the titanium and platinum pair constrained to η(Ti,Pt)=[−1.5±2.3(stat)±1.5(syst)]×10−15 at 1σ in statistical errors.
