[Termes IGN] télémétrie laser aéroportéRésumé : (Auteur) The Wide-Angle Airborne Laser Ranging System (WA-ALRS) is an instrument developed at IGN with the aim of measuring land subsidence with sub-cm accuracy. The instrument provides range measurements that are used to estimate the co-ordinates of a ground-based network of cube-corner retroreflectors (CCRs). Millimeter accuracy on relative radial co-ordinates has been demonstrated in a ground-based experiment and centimeter accuracy has been obtained in a recent airborne experiment. The main limitation in the latter experiment came from the low link budget at longer distances. In this paper, we analyze the performance expected with two different detector modules (avalanche photodiodes with amplifiers). Laboratory measurements are used to characterize detector parameters and estimate ranging accuracy. Numerical simulations predict a 2-3 mm accuracy in the vertical co-ordinate with these detectors combined to a 2-km aircraft altitude, a 20 laser beam divergence, a 250-m CCR separation and ~ 103 measurements per CCR. For this purpose, a laser interferometer and a CCD-array camera are combined to form a hybrid measuring system with an accuracy better than ±5 µm. Laserbeam and longitudinal axis of the scale are arranged colinearly. The camera is positioned perpendicular to this axis and observes a 1 cm2 large window of the scale. As the distance between the two edges of a line of a bar code scale may be wider than the size of the window, they are observed separately one after the other. The center of a line, used by definition for the calibration, can be derived from the two images. Measurement is possible under both static and dynamic conditions. The difference is that, as both gauges are read out simultaneously, the scale stands still or moves in longitudinal direction. For static measurements, the edge positions are approximately adjusted by means of their nominal value, which automatically reduces the number of observations to a minimum. Of course, dynamic measurement is faster, but the technical demands are higher due to the steady read out of both gauges. In order to reduce the amount of data, only those images with at least one visible edge of the bar code are stored. Therefore, after grabbing, each image is immediately scanned for edges by a simple but imprecise method. The precise determination of the distance between the edge and the origin of the image coordinate system is done off-line after the measurement, using their entire width in the radiometrically corrected image. The distance between the edge and the origin of the coordinate system is transformed by a previously determined scale factor into the metric system of the laser. After meteorological correction, the laser value determines the shift relative to the arbitrarily chosen start position yielding the geometric relation between the images. After describing the physical principles and their technical realisation, the errors of both sensors are presented in a systematic manner to give an estimate of the accuracy of the system. Especially for the camera, practical research results concerning lens distortion, system noise, sensor sensitivity, and lighting effects are presented. To extract the edges in an image reliably and with sub-pixel accuracy, different algorithms for edge detection are explained in detail and compared with regard to their performance. This includes the Difference-of-Boxes, Laplacian-of-Gaussian, Difference-of-Gaussians and the shen, canny, deriche filter group. With these algorithms, sub-pixel accuracy can already be achieved by the proposed evaluation stra-tegy in the twodimensional image. Special sub-pixel precise algorithms are only summarized because they merely reduce noise as demonstrated by the “STEGER-Filter”. Finally, the results of the practical application of the measurement system with respect to the calibration of Invar-Barcode staffs are presented. [Termes IGN] télémétrie laser aéroportéRésumé : (Auteur) An experiment has been conducted with the Wide Angle Airborne Laser Ranging System (WA-ALRS) in May 1998 over the ancient air base of Crucey, France. A flat area of~1.2xl.2 km around the airstrips has been specially equipped with a network of 8X8 CCRs. The ranging system was operated from the Avion de Recherche Atmosphérique et de Télédétection (ARAT), the French research aircraft for remote sensing of the CNES. Due to the small horizontal separation between the CCRs (about 150 m) it was expected that the return echoes were strongly overlapped. For this reason a revised version of the photodetector / amplifier stage has been used, with a shortened response time. Additionally, a relatively low flight path has been retained. Data have been collected during two 4-hour flights, of which 6,000 actual laser shots came out. The single-shot ranging accuracy was of 1-5 cm which should achieve a final positioning precision of 2-3 mm in the vertical. Data are currently being processed and seem to be able to confirm this prediction. [Termes IGN] télémétrie laserRésumé : (Auteur) A wide-angle airborne laser ranging system (WA-ALRS) is developed at the Institut Géographique National (IGN), France, with the aim of providing a new geodesy technique devoted to large (100km) networks with a high density (1 km-2) of benchmarks. The main objective is to achieve a 1-mm accuracy in relative vertical coordinates from aircraft measurements lasting a few hours. This paper reviews the methodology and analyzes the first experimental data achieved from a specific ground-based experiment. The accuracy in relative coordinate estimates is studied with the help of numerical simulations. It is shown that strong accuracy limitations arise with a small laser beam divergence combined with short range measurements when relatively few simultaneous range data are produced. The accuracy is of a few cm in transverse coordinates and a few mm in radial coordinates. The results from groundbased experimental data are fairly compatible with these predictions. The use of a model for systematic errors in the vehicle trajectory is shown to be necessary to achieve such a high accuracy. This work yields the first complete validation of modelization and methodology of this technique. An accuracy better than 1 mm and a few mm in vertical and horizontal coordinates, respectively, is predicted for aircraft experiments.
