[Termes IGN] superposition d'imagesRésumé : (Auteur) Combining data from different sensors for visual or classification analysis is a common task in remote sensing. The first step is normally to register the images which may be considered geometric integration; the accuracy of this step is important to create a valuable final hybrid image. This paper addresses geometric integration and introduces a new method for automatically registering two dissimilar images, such as, a radar image and an optical image with high accuracy. Pre-registration of the two images to within a specified tolerance is required. In our examples, this tolerance is up to 17 pixels (at the scale of the higher resolution image) and may be achieved by, for example, visually located control points. The described approach then uses large-scale edge gradient contours in a process that automatically locates candidate control points on the contours. The points are selected using a cost function that measures the degree of match between all possible pairs of points. Numerous control points (typically around 50 pairs) are found from matched pairs of gradient contours and use in a global, rubber sheet, polynomial warp to refine the registration. This approach is applied to register a Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) image (ERS2, 12.5 m pixels) and a Thematic Mapper (TM) optical image (Landsat-5, 28.5 m pixels) automatically. Several examples with different scene content are shown to validate the approach and discussed in terms of residual registration error and processing efficiency. [Termes IGN] seuillage d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) In this paper, we present a novel automatic and unsupervised change-detection approach specifically oriented to the analysis of multitemporal single-channel single-polarization synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images. This approach is based on a closed-loop process made up of three main steps: 1) a novel preprocessing based on a controlled adaptive iterative filtering; 2) a comparison between multitemporal images carried out according to a standard log-ratio operator; and 3) a novel approach to the automatic analysis of the log-ratio image for generating the change-detection map. The first step aims at reducing the speckle noise in a controlled way in order to maximize the discrimination capability between changed and unchanged classes. In the second step, the two filtered multitemporal images are compared to generate a log-ratio image that contains explicit information on changed areas. The third step produces the change-detection map according to a thresholding procedure based on a reformulation of the Kittler-Illingworth (KI) threshold selection criterion. In particular, the modified KI criterion is derived under the generalized Gaussian assumption for modeling the distributions of changed and unchanged classes. This parametric model was chosen because it is capable of better fitting the conditional densities of classes in the log-ratio image. In order to control the filtering step and, accordingly, the effects of the filtering process on change-detection accuracy, we propose to identify automatically the optimal number of despeckling filter iterations [Step 1)] by analyzing the behavior of the modified KI criterion. This results in a completely automatic and self-consistent change-detection approach that avoids the use of empirical methods for the selection of the best number of filtering iterations. Experiments carried out on two sets of multitemporal images (characterized by different levels of speckle noise) acquired by the European Remote Sensing 2 satellite SAR sensor confirm the effectiveness of the proposed unsupervised approach, which results in change-detection accuracies very similar to those that can be achieved by a manual supervised thresholding. [Termes IGN] surveillance écologiqueRésumé : (Auteur) A probalistic method has been developed that distinguishes oil spills from other similar sea surface features in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images. It considers both the radiometric and geometric characteristics of the areas being tested. In order to minimize the operator intervention, it adopts automatic selection criteria to extract the potentially polluted areas from the images. The method has an a priori percentage of correct classification higher than 90% on the training dataset ; the performance is confirmed on a different dataset of verified slicks. Some analysis have been conducted using images with different radiometric and geometric resolutions to test its suitability with SAR images different from European Remote Sensing (ERS) satellite ones. The system and its ability to detect and classify oil and non-oil surface features are described. Starting from a set of verified oil spills detected offshore and over coastline, the ability of SAR to reveal oil spills is tested by analysing wind intensity, deduced from the images itself, and the distance from the coast. [Termes IGN] vagueRésumé : (Auteur) In recent years, new remote sensing techniques have been developed to measure two-dimensional (2-D) sea surface elevation fields. The availability of these data has led to the necessity to extend the classical analysis methods for one-dimensional (1-D) buoy time series to two dimensions. This paper is concerned with the derivation of group parameters from 2-D sea surface elevation fields using a wavelet-based technique. Wave grouping is known to be an important factor in ship and offshore safety, as it plays a role in dangerous resonance phenomenons and the generation of extreme waves. Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data are used for the analysis. The wavelet technique is introduced using synthetic ocean surfaces and simulated SAR data. It is shown that the group structure of the ocean wave field can be recovered from the SAR image if the nonlinear imaging effects are moderate. The method is applied to a global dataset of European Remote Sensing satellite (ERS-2) wave mode data. Different group parameters including the area covered by the largest group and the number of groups in a given area are calculated for over 33 000 SAR images. Global maps of the parameters are presented. For comparison, classical 1D grouping parameters are calculated from colocated wave model data showing good overall agreement with the wavelet-derived parameters. ERS-2 image mode data are used to study wave fields in coastal areas. Waves approaching the island of Sylt in the North Sea are investigated, showing the potential of the wavelet technique to analyze the spatial wave dynamics associated with the bottom topography. Observations concerning changes of wavelength and group parameters are compared to linear wave theory.
