[Termes IGN] zone arideRésumé : (Auteur) Various image processing techniques were experimented with in this study to evaluate their efficiency for geological mapping in the Eljufra area of northwest Libya. Remote sensing data including multi-spectral optical Landsat Enhanced Thematic Mapper (ETM+), Synthetic Aperture Radar (ERS-2 SAR) and Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) extracted from the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) data were used to trace different lithological units as well as extracting geological lineaments in the study area. The study area is located in an arid environment mostly devoid of any vegetation. Most lithological and structural units are distinguishable based on their topographic form and spectral properties. Fusion of ETM+ and ERS-2 images was experimented with to further identify lithological units. Shaded relief techniques were implemented to enhance terrain perspective views and to extract geological lineaments. The results discriminated different rock units and modified formation boundaries and revealed new geological lineaments. Nine rock units were identified and plotted in the new geological map defined by the new boundaries. The dominant lineaments tend to run in the NNW-SSE and NNE-SSW directions. Analysis and interpretation of the lineaments provided information about the tectonic evolution of the study area. [Termes IGN] TurquieRésumé : (Auteur) In this study, the adverse effects of the Marmara earthquake of 17 August 1999 on the land use/land cover (LULC) of Kocaeli province in Turkey were analysed by integration of ERS-2, LANDSAT TM, SPOT-4 and IRS-1C data of varying spectral and spatial resolutions with ground data such as geological maps, soil maps and elevation data. The study was carried out in three main stages. The first stage consisted of studies on the deformation of the Earth's crust, damage in the urban texture and changes to the coastline through analysis of satellite data before and after the earthquake. Earth crust deformations resulting after the earthquake were mapped by synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data using a SAR interferometer. Damage in urban centres and coastline changes were assessed by analysis of SPOT and LANDSAT imageries. IRS data after the earthquake were used for the current LULC map of the entire province. The second stage involved settlement suitability analysis by multicriteria evaluation (MCE) methodology taking into account the geological formations, land cover, soil classes, slope, main transportation network, and urbanization status of Kocaeli province. In the third stage, the results obtained through the settlement suitability analysis were interpreted by the information generated through satellite imageries. [Termes IGN] Oklahoma (Etats-Unis)Résumé : (Auteur) The advanced synthetic aperture radar (ASAR) onboard of the satellite ENVISAT can be operated in global monitoring (GM) mode. ASAR GM mode has delivered the first global multiyear C-band backscatter data set in HH polarization at a spatial resolution of 1 km. This paper investigates if ASAR GM can be used for retrieving soil moisture using a change detection approach over large regions. A method previously developed for the European Remote Sensing (ERS) scatterometer is adapted for use with ASAR GM and tested over Oklahoma, USA. The ASAR-GM-derived relative soil moisture index is compared to 50-km ERS soil moisture data and pointlike in situ measurements from the Oklahoma MESONET. Even though the scale gap from ASAR GM to the in situ measurements is less pronounced than in the case of the ERS scatterometer, the correlation for ASAR against the in situ measurements is, in general, somewhat weaker than for the ERS scatterometer. The analysis suggests that this is mainly due to the much higher noise level of ASAR GM compared to the ERS scatterometer. Therefore, some spatial averaging to 3-10 km is recommended to reduce the noise of the ASAR GM soil moisture images. Nevertheless, the study demonstrates that ASAR GM allows resolving spatial details in the soil moisture patterns not observable in the ERS scatterometer measurements while still retaining the basic capability of the ERS scatterometer to capture temporal trends over large areas. [Termes IGN] salinitéRésumé : (Editeur) Recognized and advocated as a powerful tool, the role of remote sensing in identifying, mapping, and monitoring soil salinity and salinization will continue to expand. This book delineates how to combine science and geospatial technologies for smart environmental management.
It explores the integrated use of image spectroscopy, electromagnetic induction (EM), and ground-penetrating radar for assessing and mapping soil salinity at local and regional levels ; reviews salt types and salinity classification schemes and the remote sensing tools and techniques for mapping and monitoring ; discusses the application of soil salinity mapping using ground-based electromagnetic induction techniques ; includes model-based integrated methods for quantitative estimation of soil salinity using hyperspectral remote sensing data ; underlines the importance of understanding the basic spectral, physical, and chemical characteristics and environmental setting of salt-affected soils in the landscape for remote sensing of salinity.
The book includes analyses of basic issues of remote detection, such as the spectral behaviour of salt types and vegetation influence, and evaluations of currently available remote sensing platforms, delineating their advantages and disadvantages for salinity mapping. The accompanying CD-ROM provides colour images that enhance the material discussed in the text. The mixture of fundamental concepts, latest technological reviews, and practical application examples makes this an ideal resource for environmental assessment and decision making.Note de contenu : Preface
