[Termes IGN] rugosité du solRésumé : (Auteur) The analysis of feedback phenomena, which occur between continental surfaces and the atmosphere, is one of the keys to an improved understanding of African monsoon dynamics. For this reason, the monitoring of surface parameters, particularly soil moisture, is very important. This paper presents a new methodology for the estimation of surface soil moisture over Western Africa based on the data provided by the European Remote Sensing wind scatterometer instrument, in which an empirical model is used to estimate volumetric soil moisture. This approach takes into account the effects of vegetation and soil roughness in the soil moisture estimation process. The proposed estimations have been validated using different methods, and a good degree of coherence has been observed between satellite estimations and ground truth measurements over the Banizambou site in Niger. Moisture and rainfall estimations for the same site are shown to be strongly correlated. Comparison with the multimodel analysis product provided by the Global Soil Wetness Project, Phase 2, indicates that their estimations are well correlated, although land surface models provide slightly overestimated levels of soil moisture. [Termes IGN] lithologieRésumé : (Auteur) The extraction of lineaments and anomalous patterns in the Singhbhum Shear Zone, Jharkhand, India, has multifaceted applications for mineral exploration as well as for geological interpretation of neotectonic movements. ERS-1 SAR data are very useful for such applications because of their structural information content. A comparative study has been attempted with ERS, Landsat and IRS images for the interpretation of various geological structures over the Singhbhum Shear Zone. The Rose diagram generated from this study has shown major trends that matched well with the geological map of the area and the associated tectonic boundary as well as with the results obtained from ground based studies. [Termes IGN] positionnement différentielRésumé : (Auteur) Use of Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation Satellite (ICESat) laser altimetry is demonstrated for control of a digital elevation model (DEM) that is synthesized from repeat-pass ERS-1 and 2 synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery using interferometric SAR (InSAR). Our study area is 15650 km2 of the Barrow, AK coastal plain adjacent to the Arctic Ocean; a vast expanse of tundra, lakes, and arctic wetlands of such low relief as to be nearly devoid of terrain features. The accuracy of the ICESat-derived elevation measurements is assessed by comparison with differential global positioning system (DGPS) data acquired along ICESat ground tracks. The ICESat-derived elevations have a mean accuracy, relative to the DGPS elevations, of 0.01 +0.18 m. ICESat-derived elevations on the Arctic coastal plain provide an excellent source for DEM control. We employ the ICESat-derived ground control points (GCPs) in two distinct InSAR processing steps: 1) selected points are used to perform baseline refinements, which improves the ERS-1 and 2 interferograms and 2) the ICESat-derived GCP position data (latitude, longitude, elevation) are then used as control in mosaicking multiple InSAR-derived OEMs. The resulting ICESat-controlled DEM has a mean accuracy of-1.11 + 6.3m relative to an independent standard, which is a commercial airborne InSAR-derived DEM having 0.5 m rms accuracy. This easily meets DTED-2 standards and suggests that DEMs derived using only ICESat altimetry for ground control would meet similar standards in other regions of low relief. [Termes IGN] traitement automatique de donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) An operational processing system is described for the automated retrieval of cloud-top heights (CTHs) and amounts from the Gridded Brightness Temperature (GBT) 1 km product derived from the dual view of the Along Track Scanning Radiometer (ATSR-2) instrument onboard the ESA ERS-2 satellite. A new stereo matching algorithm, called M4 is described together with the overall processing chain for retrieving cloud-top heights and amounts. M4 is based on the successful stereo matchers, M2 and M3 which have been in operation with the NASA MISR sensor since March 2000 and which have also been applied to mapping cloud fraction in the polar region using ATSR-2 (Cawkwell and Bamber 2002, Cawkwell et al. 2001). Results in companion papers (Naud et al., Denis et al. 2007) describe the accuracy achieved using this algorithm and detailed scene-by-scene results are available from http://cloudmap.org under results->UCL->ATSR-2 Validation. We assess the impact of cloud-top winds on the accuracy of the retrieved cloud-top heights and conclude that for most middle and lower tropospheric clouds, cloud-top winds will have little, if any, noticeable impact. We show how ATSR-2 cloud-top heights at the different wavelengths (particularly visible compared with thermal IR) can sometimes yield information on multi-layer clouds which is unique to ATSR-2. The processing system has recently been applied to three years of ASTR-2 GBT data and results are shown. These results are available from the British Atmospheric Data Centre. [Vedettes matières IGN] AltimétrieRésumé : (Auteur) The ERS-1, ERS-2 and Envisat series of satellite altimeters provide the only extensive datasets that could conceivably be usedto constrain ocean tide models in high latitudes. Their sun-synchronous sampling, however, severely limits theobservations of solar tides, especially the principal semidiurnal S2 constituent. The Munk–Cartwright response method is anatural choice when attempting to analyze sun-synchronous data. The present study examines various ways a response analysis might be implemented to extract tides from ERS data. Admittances expressed as simple linear or constant functions of frequency cansometimes improve estimates over standard parameterizations, especially if done in conjunction with a reasonably accurate priorsolution. Some form of regularization, such as ridge regression, is also shown to improve the estimates. The approach provesbeneficial in a test for the southern Indian Ocean tides. It offers some promise for regions otherwise void of usefulobservations.
