This paper presents a simulation study to investigate whether spaceborne submillimeter radiometric observations, which can be realized with fairly high spatial resolution, are able to derive the vertical structure of the atmospheric wet delay. The accuracy of the retrieved zenith wet delay (ZWD) trend as a function of surface height is assessed in order to correct the associated height dependence of the interferometric phase error in a SAR interferogram. Using a simulated benchmark, we evaluate the errors associated with the use of both a linear and an exponential model of the behavior of ZWD as a function of the surface height. This paper shows a fairly accurate reconstruction of the trend parameters estimated from radiometer brightness temperature images, with respect to realistic atmospheric profiles provided by radiosounding observations (RAOBs). The trend parameters that we consider in this paper are the slope K for the linear model and scale height H for the exponential one. An overall better accuracy is found for the exponential model, which is more representative of the actual behavior of ZWD with height, resulting in a residual uncertainty in the path delay due to the atmospheric stratification of approximately 0.2-0.3 cm and nearly zero bias, as compared to RAOBs. [Termes IGN] modèle numérique de terrainRésumé : (Auteur) Determining the Earth's surface topography and deformation with interferometric synthetic aperture radar involves measurement of phase, which, for a typical coherent radar signal, can only be done modulo 2?. The cycle of ambiguity inherent in the phase measurement has to be unwrapped over all observation dimensions (e.g., azimuth, range, and time) to remove the 2? ambiguity of the phase measurements. For a time series of SAR images, useful for reducing noise in topographic applications or measuring time-varying surface deformation, the necessary steps to connect ambiguous radar phase measurements are more challenging, and the operation may be termed 3-D phase unwrapping. We describe a 3-D unwrapping approach using an extended Kalman filter. Our approach readily exploits existing information, and is robust in the presence of noise. For all tested data sets, it provides improved accuracy compared to existing approaches. [Termes IGN] reconstruction 3DRésumé : (Auteur) The reconstruction of digital surface models (DSMs) of urban areas from interferometric synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data is a challenging task. In particular the SAR inherent layover and shadowing effects need to be coped with by sophisticated processing strategies. In this paper, a maximum-likelihood estimation procedure for the reconstruction of DSMs from multi-aspect multi-baseline InSAR imagery is proposed. In this framework, redundant as well as contradicting observations are exploited in a statistically optimal way. The presented method, which is especially suited for single-pass SAR interferometers, is examined using test data consisting of experimental airborne millimeterwave SAR imagery. The achievable accuracy is evaluated by comparison to LiDAR-derived reference data. It is shown that the proposed estimation procedure performs better than a comparable non-statistical reconstruction method. [Termes IGN] interferométrie différentielle
[Termes IGN] interféromètrie par radar à antenne synthétiqueRésumé : (auteur) Satellite radar interferometry (InSAR) is a powerful technique to measure motion of the Earth’s surface. However, the applicability of the conventional approach is limited due to error sources: temporal decorrelation, geometric decorrelation, and atmospheric signal delay. Radar interferometric time series approaches have been developed to overcome these degrading factors. By using the information content of a full radar image stack, the impact of the error sources can be reduced and time series of the deformation history can be estimated. The Persistent Scatterer Interferometry (PSI) technique, one of the time series approaches, is based on the coherent phase history of point scatterers. Since the location of these point scatterers is not known beforehand, PSI comprises both an estimation and a detection problem. The complicating factor in the estimation and detection process is the wrapped condition of the phase observations, i.e., phase observations in the [−π,+π) interval. As a consequence, the coherence of an image pixel in the time domain cannot be assessed directly. Furthermore, assumptions regarding the spatial and/or temporal smoothness of the deformation signal, expressed by a model, are required to estimate the unknown phase ambiguities. Therefore, both the correctness of the model used, and the actual phase persistence of the pre-selected pixels should be assessed. The multiple, model dependent, possible solutions, in combination with the uncertainty in the actual noise level of a certain image pixel, require a balanced procedure in the estimation and detection process. Hereby, the number of false detections and false rejections of these Persistent Scatterers (PS) should be minimized. This thesis describes the design, implementation, and evaluation of a new Persistent Scatterer Interferometry algorithm, the Delft implementation of PSI (DePSI). The algorithm is based on a framework of geodetic estimation, testing, and quality control techniques, known as the ’Delft school’. Using this framework, the algorithm is able to detect point scatterers with consistent reflection properties over time, for which the deformation time series can be estimated with sufficient reliability.
